birthers' concerns that Rubio might not be eligible for higher office because his parents were not citizens when he was born

Wait, let me see if I have this straight, you can be a SENATOR if you're not a citizen, but VP is out?

And as far as I can tell, despite the Birthers' ardent desire, the 14th amendment's citizenship clause hasn't been revoked yet.

That's correct. However, whether or not Rubio's parents were citizens is irrelevant. Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, hence he is a U.S. citizen.

Not until I see his long form original non-photoshopped birth certificate he wasn't. A legal copy backed up with a dozen witnesses, announcements in local papers and sworn testimony from a sitting Governor just isn't going to cut it.

His parents were here illegally which makes him an anchor-baby.
We're supposed to hate anchor babies, aren't we?

That may be one of the most disjointed articles I have ever read. WTF was the theme? Was it Rubio is ineligible to be President? Makes no sense if he was born in the US. Was it he is a liar? Makes sense simply because he's a politician. Was it crossing political lines because some birther mistakenly believes both parents must have born in the US, so Rubio is ineligible? I just don't get it.

Someone please interpret for this farker.

Except the older ones who all love to remember how great it was back in the good ol' days before Castro. The thing to keep in mind when wading into the Cuba debate: Neither side is really worth caring about. It's not Freedom Fighters vs Communists. It's Fascists vs Communists, with a handful of Freedom-Fighter types sprinkled in on both sides over the years.

Lots of deflection in the comments of TFA. It'd be amusing if it weren't so sad.

To be fair, Batista was a military dictator. I'm pretty sure life under his regime wasn't a cakewalk for anyone outside the circles of power. So, whether it's under Castro or Batista, there's a fair chance that, yes, Rubio's parents came to the US to escape an oppressive regime.

This, pretty much. It's rare to actually find a real legitimate use of the "both sides are bad!" argument, but if one were to exist, it would be the whole Cuban Communist/anti-Communist debacle.

As for the story itself, I'm far from a Rubio fan but who farking cares when his parents immigrated to the US? The man himself was born in Miami, and that's all that's good enough for him to qualify as a presidential candidate. I guess the only value to reporting this is to maybe laugh at the GOP for embracing the birther movement and now having it bite them in the ass when the tinfoil hatters are attacking one of their candidates. But even then, it is pretty weak.

More of an exagerration than a lie. Maybe they left because things just sucked in Cuba in 1956. Maybe they could see where things were headed. It was almost 50 years ago. I'll let this one slide. It was a cool story.

Well yeah, there's that. But I was talking more about what kind of thought process goes through the heads of birthers (and the media that report on them to give them a false sense of credibility) to think that the citizenship status of an America-born person's parents actually matters in disqualifying him/her from the presidency. It's the same BS as when they tried claiming that Obama somehow was ineligible because his dad wasn't American. Do this many people not understand the concept of what a "natural-born citizen" is?

2011-10-22 08:24:02 AM
Yeah so he's following the standard republican plan outlined by the leader of their philosophy ( Strauss ) to lie to obtain and hold power.

It's not that his parents are foreigners, it's that he has represented himself as the son of refugees from Castro's evil Commie rule.

When!?!?!? America needs to know if an anchor baby might be President.

Anchor babies are natural born citizens.

Stop changing the subject. Anchor babies allow illegals to get free schooling and hospital care. We can't let an anchor baby near the whitehouse otherwise mexicans will be streaming across the border.

According to the GOP, life starts at concpetion, yes? Jindal was conceived in India but born in the US.

So, how does that work?

The only reason this is a bog story, is because this guy scares the left. Otherwise it is a non-story. This is as big a deal as the Scwartz-Harbaugh handshake.

The thing is, records show that his mother returned to Cuba for a short while as they were planning to move back. When they saw what was replacing Batista they decided to stay in the US. She came back and the family stayed here. So yes, his family can be considered exiles. This is a non-story.

Apart from the anchor baby question Rubio seems to be ducking.

So Rubio's an anchor baby and Jindhal is an anchor baby. So I guess the GOP is running Christie in 2016 unless he dies of a massive fat attack first.
