Is NOT afraid of:

1) Permanent ink being injected into his face with a fast-moving needle.
2) Piercing his flesh with metal, and hanging decorations in it.
3) Routinely abusing his muscular structure with ritualized, repetitive punishment.
4) Any other human on the planet.
5) Pain.
6) Death.

IS afraid of:

1) Heart-meltingly adorable, fuzzy widdle floppy-pawed puppies with tiny button noses on their cute little licky faces who just want to love people unconditionally for their whole entire lives.

Seems legit.

I wasn't going to buy it either, but when he started berating himself for being a coward, it made it seem a fair amount more real.

There's no way he could be faking it for attention. I mean look at him. Obviously he hates attention.

What happened to him when he was younger that would cause him to be so afraid?

Did his parents let the family dog rape him or something?

You're not a coward, Marvin.

Yes, he is.

You're a strong person.

No, he's not.

Well, to be fair...If we define "strong" as: "Can tear the Manhattan Yellow Pages in half with his earlobes," then...probably.

But if we define "strong" as: "Can pet a cute fuzzy widdle puppy-face without filling his pants," then no.

Get off his case! It's a phobia. Phobias are not subject to rational thought. They can (and do) happen to anybody, regardless of size, tattoos or macholinity. Cheap jokes about this guy are out of line. He was brave enough to be in the video. More power to him.

Going by the video, this fear started when Marvin was 5-years old. It doesn't say what happened to him as a young child, but it must have been very traumatic to last this long. Childhood trauma can indeed cripple you.

I wonder if it's puppies, or just dogs in general. They may have just used a puppy
because it would be less threatening to someone with a dog phobia than a full grown dog.

A second video queues up where it talks about the cause of his fear. At 5 years old, he saw his friend get attacked by a pit bull. 1000 stitches needed after the attack.

I got bit by a dog when I was 11. The last words the little waifish kids said to me before their mutt bit me was "don't worry. he won't bite you". Then he chomped down so hard that it ripped clean through my jeans and tore a hole in my leg that needed five stitches. The rest of the leg turned an angry purple/green bruise and hurt for weeks.

When I was in my 20s I was still terrified of dogs. Like this guy. Watching this video and his reactions brings up memories of running -- sprinting flat out -- across a park to escape a tiny barking poodle or a floppy lab who wanted to play, usually while screaming "CALL OFF YOUR DOG!!!!" hysterically over my shoulder. LIke the guy in the vid, I would avoid parks and areas where I knew there would be dogs. My heart would start racing if I were walking and I heard a dog bark. Tiny cute puppy or massive snarling doberman. Didn't matter. They were equally terrifying to me.

I got over it. I have a dog of my own now and I can "read" dog behaviour.

But watching this guy? Yeah...I know exactly what he's feeling. I've been there. Ironically, when I feel trapped and powerless and fearful and sad today? My dog is my comfort.

Phobias don't really follow logic. All it takes is a few neurons firing in an odd pattern and bam, you are afraid of dandylions. You might as well tell a schizophrenic person to man up and just not hear voices, or tell a blind person to describe blue.

Gah, poor guy! I guess I didn't stay long enough on the page to see the second video.

I am glad they used a puppy instead of a full grown pit bull. I truly don't think he could have managed to touch a full grown pit bull given his level of childhood trauma.

I wonder who was first - him or Mike Tyson?

Did you not watch both videos? He was five or six years old, playing in the yard when a pittie came into the yard and started barking and growling, it scared the daylights out of him as it likely would any kid that age.

You tough guys are sure quick to call him a pussy though, huh?

It would take something extreme, wouldn't it? For me, it would take something like being a very young, impressionable boy and watching my best friend being mauled by a pit bull to within an inch of his life.

Furthermore, he wouldn't be afraid of any of the pics you posted, as his phobia is Pit Bull specific.

Assuming it was real, the chick with the fear of pickles is the greatest phobia of all time.

Came here to say this. I think his fear is legit. It's not PUPPIES in general, it's a specific BREED that tore his friend up.

When I was 7, I had a German Shepherd follow me to school one day, then go apeshiat and try to kill me. Luckily it was winter and I had a huge coat on, plus an adult came over and pulled the dog off. I still love dogs, and Sheps are probably one of my favorite, despite my experience.
Spiders, on the other hand...

A phobia is a kind of neurological ischemia that affects all the healthy thinking around it. When I was doing massage therapy I was surprised by the number of clients who had flashbacks to when they were inappropriately touched when they were children. I'm not talking about years of molestation, I'm talking about the one time when weird cousin Ernie goosed them at the family reunion picnic.

In itself, that doesn't look like much, but mind you, you can still lose a leg to a bruise.

My grandma was completely afraid of cats of any size. She was attacked by some feral cats when she was a kid and never wanted to be in sight of a cat for the rest of her life.

So...yeah...phobias are weird.

My sister was mauled by a border collie in my care a year ago next week. She needed a farkton of stitches in her face because of that. Until then I fostered a lot of abused dogs, but this one was one that I knew to be socialized and friendly. The worst part? The dog thought he was protecting me.

Yeah, not so fond of dogs any more.

Leave him alone. He was clearly terrified and for good reason.

I have a friend who is terrified of little people with misproportioned arms and legs - if you're tiny but proportioned right, no problem, but long torso and stumpy arms/legs? Forget about it.

I've worked as a paramedic for 16 years now, and I've met plenty of people who fear things, but I had never actually witnessed a true "phobia" until I met my friend - trust me, there's a difference.

I made the mistake of pulling a prank on her one day - I knelt down on my shoes, pulled my arms into my shirt, and pulled a "Dorf" just to see what she would do - I truly thought she was going to kill me...

Is it a real phobia, or staged for TV? Dunno.

But those who say it cannot be real - full stop - are just farking wrong.

TheWizard: ... or tell a blind person to describe blue.

To be fair, is anyone able to describe a color without resorting to the color itself? I suppose you could go scientific and refer to its EM wavelength, but that's really more of a definition than a description.

How would you describe 'blue'? "Get some green and take away the yellow"?

Just last week, one of my guests was telling me that she once had a border collie, adopted at 7 months old, rescued from an abusive home. The dog eventually had to be put down because she was like a bomb. She could go off at any time without warning. Shows what an abusive home can do even to breeds that are normally sweet dogs

Use the old "hot" and "cold" metaphors for red and blue. I'm told that those approximate the sense of a particular color, if not the reality of it.

Same thing happened to me as I was going home to my Gran's house. Luckily, our dog, Kitty, yeah, that's what we named her, was on the back porch just as Gran was letting her go outside. She came a running and was waiting when I cleared the fence with the German Shepherd ahold of my coat sleeve. She tore into that German Shepherd like he was tissue paper, then he managed to get back over the fence.
Kitty was just a fat old hound dog, we found her as a pup wandering on a country back road, but she saved my life that day or at least, saved me and Gran from serious injury.
