Reminds me of the episode of The West Wing where Abbey Bartlett wrote a $500 dollar check to a woman who was living in a shelter, and the woman didn't cash it because she wanted to keep it as a momento instead.

How dare the President give my hard earned tax money to lazy, no good beggars.

2011-10-21 02:58:47 PM
I have no idea what to think about this.

How About: Its his salary and he can do whatever he damn well pleases with it, just like anyone else?

I would also accept: its still waaay better than what Vladimir Putin puts in his letters to the public.

I remember reading that Reagan did this, too, although it made a more interesting story because of Reagan's stances on things like Welfare.

Cool. I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car, I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage. If I helped him, he's going to help me.

It's a cute PR story that has a nice ring of "good guy" to it that appeals to me. Plus, the headline is full of farking win.

/Dunno how TRUE it is, but I think in the same situation I'd feel and do the same

2011-10-21 03:58:06 PM
Meh, its his money, he should be able to do what he wants with it.

2011-10-21 03:58:55 PM
I'll believe it when the check clears my bank.

2011-10-21 03:59:16 PM
"Some of these letters you read and you say, 'Gosh, I really want to help this person, and I may not have the tools to help them right now,'" the president told Saslow. "And then you start thinking about the fact that for every one person that wrote describing their story, there might be another hundred thousand going through the same thing. So there are times when I'm reading the letters and I feel pained that I can't do more, faster, to make a difference in their lives."

Well, you could start by cutting taxes for rich people.

I need some evidence. It is one thing to put in a word with a local official who can contact them or whatever. It is a whole different thing to sit down and write a personal check. I highly doubt the president would do this. The signature and the check itself would be worth much more sold "as is" rather than deposited. Think about how much a tabloid would pay for a copy of a check like that. So I'm going to call BS unless I see some evidence.

Also, who even uses paper checks anymore?

2011-10-21 04:04:11 PM
DamnYankees: I have no idea what to think about this.

It's freely given and no string attached and it was his personal money.

2011-10-21 04:04:34 PM
Hey, Republican policies have impoverished so many people that it's a buyer's market! Obama's just being a savvy capitalist. The invisible hand of the market and all that shiat.

2011-10-21 04:05:09 PM
Otherwise Just Fine: Also, who even uses paper checks anymore?

Huge corporations with watermarked, intaglio stamped, striped checks. And almost the whole rest of the world.

2011-10-21 04:06:59 PM
On more than one occasion, President Barack Obama has cut personal checks to struggling Americans who've written to the White House,

Shaggy C asks, does Solyndra executives count as struggling Americans now?

The man is assuredly history's worst monster.

Yeah, that wouldn't happen any more. E-deposit the check, and keep the (now void) paper one as a memento.

I think it's fairly obvious that Obama cares about the average person more than any Republican candidate does.

Poor people have internet! Thanks for the socialism Fartbongo.

I honestly love that just about every positive Obama story lately has had the most trollish headline possible. I know this isn't new for Fark, but the last few Obama-related headlines have been spectacular.

farkityfarker: I think it's fairly obvious that Obama cares about the average person more than any Republican candidate does.

The thing that sort of ... softed my stance on GW (the man, not the administration) was hearing people say that in PERSON he seemed genuine, sympathetic, interested in what they had to say, etc.

So now I just figure he was a bit blind, and all his friends were certifiably evil. :\

Also reminds me of Salvador Dali, who was notoriously cheap. He would eat a meal at a restaurant, and when he had to pay his check, he would draw something on the check because he knows that 9 times out of 10, the restaurant owner is going to keep the check as a souvenir rather than cashing it.

The headline is spot on. +1. That's precisely what this is about.

If Obama wants to give me money, I'll vote for him.

If Newt Gingrich wants to give me money, I'll take his money, tell him I'll vote for him and then vote for Obama anyways.

My vote can be bought. Actually, the price is quite reasonable. In fact, I occasionally offer coupons.

2011-10-21 04:35:44 PM
He should pick some charity groups around the country to donate too, and refer people there. It would look good for the person coming for help if they had a letter from Obama directing them there. Also, no one could say he is trying to buy votes.

I'll throw this out: Whoever pays my college bill, gets my vote, even if he's Rick Perry. I take back what I said earlier about secretly changing my vote when I enter the ballot booth!

/or do I?

I remember reading that Rudyard Kipling was perpetually exasperated when balancing his checkbook because those to whom he wrote checks would often not cash them but keep them as souvenirs instead, because they had his "autograph" on them. So the balances on his statements and ledger never matched..

Look, he can't help everybody out. Just special cases, like hopefully the letter I wrote him last week about my exhaust rusting. I mean, he'll probably pay for that - I included the estimate from Meineke - and fair's fair. But he can't be helping everyone.

Everything Obama has done, including today's final pull-out from Iraq, he does just to get reelected. (new window) Even when he privately gives individuals cash assistance out of his own pocket - the kind of charity that isn't even tax deductible - he does it to get reelected. Truly, he is history's greatest monster.

You do realize that the kind of charity in this article isn't tax deductible and wouldn't show up on his taxes, right?

My friend, let me tell you of a terrible scourge sweeping my country... cat juggling.
And the leather seats in my private plane are cracking... I feel like a Goddamn scumbag!

Yes, let's get those policies out there even quicker. There's still some extinguishable life left in the economy.

I can't think of a more inefficient way to buy votes than to send checks to individual citizens.

Way to fail at corruption, Fartbongma0.

Dear Obama, could you visit my friend Scott, who is dying from cancer, in his ass.

Yeah, I felt like an idiot immediately after posting that. We use checks for most of our business to business transactions, the rest are CC. I guess I was thinking of how odd a "personal check" would be for most people. It has a personal name and address, and signature. Not an issue for the president, but kind of odd way to provide assistence, in my subjective little head.

Also Gin.

A check from Obama should be fine. If it's from the U.S. Government, this is probably a good idea.

Hell, he can have my vote or free but I sure could use new brakes and a working alternator and a way to pay for my insulin, meds and other luxury items that keep me alive. I wonder if there's a program for that. Some sort of grant for people who aren't already billionaires or billionaire's kids. Maybe if I become a corporation. : /
