What other major bad guys are out there for him to hunt down?

As I understand it, the reason for the troop withdraw had to do with the US quibbling over legal immunity for US troops. The Iraqi government wanted US troops to be held accountable if they violated local law, the US government wanted full immunity.

I can see that cutting both ways tho.

Obama Announces Complete Withdrawal of U.S. Forces From Iraq by End of 2011

President Obama announced Friday that all U.S. forces will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2011.

"As promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year," Obama said. "After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over."

Obama spoke in the White House briefing room after completing a secure video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The president said the two are in "full agreement" about how to move forward.

Obama's announcement would close off the possibility of maintaining a U.S. military presence in Iraq beyond a Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline set in 2008.

It would also mean that after eight years of war in Iraq, Obama would be making good on his promise to wind down the conflict.

More than 4,400 American military members have been killed since the U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003.

Fox News' Ed Henry and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

He has next year in the bag. Sorry Republicans, oh wait no I'm not.

2011-10-21 01:08:54 PM
And cue the switch from "Why hasn't Obama ended the wars and brought the troops home?" to "Why is Obama cutting and running?" in 3...2...1...

2011-10-21 01:08:56 PM
This was Bush's time-line. Obama stuck to it and is ending the war.

Obama also confirmed a 50% reduction of troops in Afghanistan.

He implied there would be a work-program to secure employment for veterans returning home.

He was going to do it before being elected?

jvl: Yay! He has implemented the agreement George W Bush made with Iraq!

Actually, Obama is holding to Bush's last withdrawal timetable, but he isn't following any agreement Bush made with Iraq. Iraq couldn't hold up its end of the bargain of getting things together, so Obama said "Okay, fark this. We're pulling out." Kind of a different thing.

Also, and this is important: Obama is pulling us out of Iraq. Bush kept saying he would, he said the war would be short, he said we'd do everything orderly, but Obama ACTUALLY GOT THE shiat TOGETHER TO DO IT.

2011-10-21 01:09:09 PM
So does that mean Pres. Obama is now officially a coward?

FTFA: The American withdrawal by the end of 2011 was sealed in a deal between the two countries when George W. Bush was president.

We're going to need those troops and equipment when we invade Iran.

This is the best news I've heard in a while.

I don't care if Obama gets the credit or GWB (since this is ultimately fulfilling an agreement he made with Iraq in 2008). I'm just psyched our men and women are coming home.

3 wars are now down to one.

If only we can get the hell out of Afghanistan now...
