I just realized that this is the gal whose blood all the little Juston Beebarr fanlets cried for when she beat him out for the "Best New Artist" Grammy.

Yeeeah. The Grammies are possibly THE most out-of-touch entertainment award that exists...But after watching this, I'm gonna go ahead and cite the "stopped clock being right twice a day" theory. She obviously leaves more talent on her tampons once a month than that pint-sized haircut-host could ever hope to have in several lifetimes worth of his wettest little dreams.

Wow.

That's it -- just: WOW!

Sleep, William Blake
All is well
There's a marriage up in heaven tonight
There's a fire in Hell
You were not mad
I know time will tell

I just said Wow! and Wow! My daughter turned and looked at me funny (I'm wearing headphones). Looked in the comments and saw someone else had the same reaction. Off to iTunes...

Lovely. Thanks for finding that, Subby. It's a mellow way to start a Friday evening.

That's great. Now let's see those cans, sweetie pie.

Esperanza Spalding?

..click..

Yup.

Love that album. It's simultaneously accessible and complex which is an insanely difficult combination to pull off.

Ok..it was ok, but really, no beat, and i couldn't dance to it. Would have been better with a drum beat and if she was just singing. Lovely voice, upright bass didn't do much for me though.

Needs a kazoo solo.

Thank you, Subby. You deserve prosperity and love for posting that.

But 10,000 years from now, an investigator into the culture of 21st century pan-globals, searching for some artifact telling him who we were, what we valued, what we searched for, will detect two somewhat restorable threads of digital medium in some corner of that future dustbin. His keen restoration device falters, however, and he loses one of the precious musical performances.

Impeturbable, he continues on and provides his colleagues not with Esperanza Spalding's performance of William Blake's "Little Fly," but with Britney Spears' "Slave 4 U."

Yes, that would hurt.

What's the range of a fretless bass?

About 10 yards if you throw it hard enough.

Where have I heard that name? Ping! She went on stage about a half hour ago here in Kansas City.

Here (YouTube) Esperanza Spalding discusses her song "little fly".

The lyrics: William Blake: The Fly

Little fly,
Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.

Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?

For I dance
And drink and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.

If thought is life
And strength and breath,
And the want
Of thought is death,

Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die.

[ P.S Blake was a raging Gnostic and many Christians on exposure to him run fleeing and weeping ]

That's ok - to each their own.

But why did you think it necessary to tell us? Why don't you just go back to fantasizing about giving Justin Bieber a blowjob or listening to your Spice Girls collection or whatever your pedestrian tastes are and not inflict you content free opinion on us?

Because they have a keyboard and many people think that that gives them license to let everyone in the world know how they feel about anything.

I have a feeling that if you told us what does impress you, we would all end up feeling sad for the totality of humanity.

I guess the only problem I have with jazz and similar styles is that I sometimes get the impression the musicians aren't playing the same song. (I rarely enjoy jazz solos for that reason.) I kind of had that feeling with this piece until she started to sing.

Otherwise very nice. Very, very nice.

Wasn't overly impressed. Sure she's beautiful and I would love to see her in a home made Bukakke video but I didn't care for the song, lyrics, playing.... just not my thing.

But yes, I think she has a serious career in porn ahead of her if she plays her cards right.

Invest in a decent subwoofer. I'm still feelin' it.

If jazz isn't your thing, you still might like this -

Esperanza (on electric bass) w/ The Roots covering Michael Jackson's (by way of Stevie Wonder) song I Can't Help It (new window)

It's still pretty jazzy but it's a little more conventional than subby's video.

For some reason not only is this relevant to the thread, but is really important to you. As soon as I figure out why, I'll let everyone else know.
