Yeah. The word "Almost" never entered my vocabulary in this. It's more of an all-or-nothing thing.

How are Penn & Teller "hipster"? They've had the same schtick for at least the last 20 years, probably longer.

It's their whole above-it-all attitude, behaving as though their somehow better, cooler, and more hip than the stodgy old establishment style magicians when they're actually just performing the same old tired bullshiat with some "edgy" veneer on top. Magic acts offend me at the most fundamental level, but behaving as though they're somehow a "cooler" type of magician makes them that much more revolting. It's like, I can handle a band that plays shiatty music but is willing to embrace how crappy they are, but a band that plays shiatty music but has an attitude like they're better than it just offends me. Penn and Teller are the progenitors of the whole modern "hip" magician industry (David Blaine, Criss Angel, etc.) where their stupid, debased form of entertainment repackaged in a glossy new package that just shouts "Look how cool we are!" Well, you're not. You're exactly the same as the ridiculous, cheesy asshole with the half-cape and top hat. Michael Hurwitz seemed to get it.

I don't understand how magic acts offend you at a fundamental level. It's entertainment. It might not be terribly high-brow entertainment, but it's good, clean entertainment (for the most part). I collect magic books as part of my hobby and I can tell you, there's a lot of skill and planning involved in everything, and the "above it all" attitude and talk is there to distract you from seeing something that the magician doesn't want you to see.

you know, the thing about David Blaine... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

I saw Penn and Teller a couple of years ago in Vegas. After the show, which was great (funny, entertaining, and you know magic) they went back to the lobby and signed autographs, took pictures and joked around with the audience. They didn't leave until everyone who wanted a photo got a photo and everyone who wanted an autograph got an autograph. They were down to earth, and really entertaining. I have nothing but good things to say about them.

Penn & Teller are anti-magicians, because they usually tell you how they did the trick after they do it.

I have the same basic story about them. Very cool guys. They, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas China town, and getting to try Del Taco were the only good things about Vegas.

The heat, the resort fee to use the pool, and the pricing on everything around City Center can go fark itself.

I seem to recall a Farker with a Penn & Teller story that went pretty much like this: He lost his chick over Penn. Penn invited her to have a threesome with he and his wife/girlfriend/whatever. She agreed. She and Farker broke up.

I kind of like David Blaine. He had a street magic special years ago that was really cool. Plus, I like how he just does crazy endurance shiat that's not really an illusion. Criss Angel is just horrible.

The first time I saw Blaine on Letterman, doing his lil trick where a card rises up outta the deck, I knew he was in league w/ The Devil.

The guy's an asshole, talks about personal shiat about his exes on the radio. His lack of class is offensive, to say the least.

I think the song "Limp" was an ode to Blaine, never, ever anger a woman who can immortalize you in song.

Regarding David Blaine, I like Chris Rock's remark: When did we start accepting trick-less magicians?

Well, I could (probably)forgive my girlfriend for cheating on me, but no way for a threeway cheat. Unless it was two other girls. Or we were having three ways every weekend anyway. But to go have group sex and not invite me? That's just rude.

I don't really understand the hate on "magic" or "illusionist", because whether you find it entertaining or not, they intentionally illuminate the idea of a hoax. The experience gives you a good deal of ammunition to become skeptical of your senses in spite of your perceptions. Copperfield's "make big shiat go away" stuff is never interesting, but Teller has a good bit on the subtle stuff. (new window)

For me it's Blaine and Angel's "illusions" which are tv fakery. The street "audience" and the people they "randomly" pick are all actors. The whole thing is a sham.

Now, true slight of hand and that kind of stuff is cool. Even knowing how it's done you can still be tricked by a master and be entertained.

The first mention of the word "hipster" I know of was by Harlan Ellison in the novel Spider Kiss in 1961:

"a cultural phenomenon. A leech personality, singularly devoid of purpose, of substantiality. The shadow people." "

So we've got at least 50 years worth of hipsters in the pipeline.
