People who use Facebook in connection with any real information about themselves or family and friends really do need to have their computer privileges revoked permanently. I'm getting sick and tired of idiots sending me sign-up requests to Facebook. It's to the point where I have an email address I won't give out to people unless I think they pass a very basic threshold for intelligence and self-interest because I'm sick of my address being passed around like a $3 whore at a frat party to every goddamn company on the intarwebs by family members who don't understand the first thing about privacy.

It's Facebook. I've heard of it. If I haven't created a profile yet, it's because I don't farking want one you slobbering baboon.

I've run into this problem, sites that can't or won't let you login in directly. It's really simple to set up, so if you can't be bothered, I'll go to the competition.

Why shouldn't other people be able to share their own personal information? If and what they want to share is up to them.

That's what made me delete my facebook account (I'm sure that just like my WoW account it's not really gone) and spotify account on the same day. I was a paying spotify user so it didn't even effect me at the time but it was the principle of the whole thing. A lot of people on Spotify's forum where sending in screen shots of their cancelled account.

Actually, yea. I have to agree with the sentiment here. I don't have a FB account because I don't want a FB account. It took me YEARS to get those dick heads to forget about me, I don't want them coming back.

Ah. Yes.
I think the term profile is being conflated.
Actual public profile pages - ones that have a wall, apps, etc. - I don't think they're being constructed automatically without any user interaction from their subject (except by pranksters and the like).

I think what is happening is that Facebook is creating server-side entries for profile information - i.e. if a circle of friends on Facebook all have different information about Dave (who has no account) listed, the Dave general entries are all being linked together and growing off of this information, despite there actually being no official Dave profile.

Or so I think.

Yes. Because one flippant remark at the very start of a single sentence should be used to override the entirety of the content of the rest of the post.

Here, allow me to rephrase this for the facetiously-challenged: people who expose their personal information on Facebook are idiots, but people who expose other people's personal information without the other person's permission should be shot.

Better?

I read the best way to "delete" your account is to slowly fill it with worthless information - places you don't live, movies/activities you don't like, etc. Then after awhile (a little vague on how long) you can disable it and it's mostly worthless because it doesn't have any correct information.

Good question. When I finally decide to end mine, I'll try it as the "nuclear option". Kill off what little personal info is even in there, then it'll be porn as far as the eye can see. Porn for miles. Porn so high you could lose an elephant in it. Porn like our forefathers daren't to dream. Yea, for it will be the heart-land of all God's porn.

Won't help much.
Facebook doesn't delete stuff, they mostly just mark stuff as deleted, move it into a different data set (e.g. "removed friends" instead of "friends") or keep the history of the changes you made (names, email addresses).
I heard something along those lines a few years ago during a chat with a CS prof who had an interest and some knowledge about the technology in use by Facebook - and his statements were confirmed by the data that Europe-vs-Facebook got from Facebook.

Is this really a surprise to anyone? Of course they aggregate data on non-members, they are in the business of collecting and selling access to information. Whether they intend to do this or not (of course they do), the fact is that we cannot control some drooling moron snapping a photo of us and "tagging" us on Facebook. Even if the public tags are removed or users turn off the auto-tag feature, it only prevents those tags from being displayed publicly; Facebook can still use that data privately or turn it over to law enforcement.

this. people take fb way too seriously...or maybe im just old enough to have missed to sociological importance of it all. frankly, i don't see why people feel the need to allow folks they barely know access to their photos, information and whereabouts. i've had high school classmates i never even talked to try to friend me. sorry, ninth grade homeroom acquaintance, but i really don't care how you are or what you're doing. i think collecting friends on fb has become a hobby for some rather than an actual effort to connect with people they even slightly care care about. i mean, one guy i know has 1500 friends...sweet baby jesus why?
