SweetSilverBlues: So, Subby, she should be let off the hook for killing another human being in an horrifying manner because she's old?

She got to grow old, unlike her victim. Time to pay the price.

If that was deliberate, well done.

Eirik: Isn't that basically what happened to that guy that plowed though the farmers market in Santa Monica and killed something like a dozen people? He was convicted but not sent to jail because he was old?

He got five year's probation and a $100,000 fine. The judge concluded that it wouldn't be fair to send him to prison. Because the state would be forced to pay for his medical care.

He died last year, before his probation was up.

Or long lost daughter.

error 303: And she should be convicted and at the very, very least put under house arrest for the rest of her life. Minimum security prison also makes sense.

We have a justice system for a reason. The victims family deserves some kind of closure.

Yeah, but its Texas....

There's only one woman in the article.

There were 76 of them. And they were all a year old.

FTA:

The 76-year-old woman with an oxygen tank...

Mary Ann Rivera had been living with one of her children..

So it took our zeroes in blue 40 years to track down a senior citizen living with her kid and dragging an O2 tank around?

I know, I know "cop-bashers" like me only hate cops till we need them.

Unfortunately when someone does need one, they're only 40 years late.

FTA: The 76-year-old woman with an oxygen tank would go undetected for decades before being arrested last week in a small community in south Georgia, near Valdosta.

She was 76 years old for four decades?

From the article, it sounds like she skipped town in the days before things were computerized, they had some of her information wrong and no one bothered to look for her until relevantly recently.

I doubt that she's been the only case on this detectives plate for the last 30 years.

Depends on the country.
Knowing the quality of most police work is crap most the time, a,d especially after 40 years this would be enough to create reasonable doubt if I was a juror.

I was being sarcastic before. Seriously - a gigantic-ass fine for murder? You kill someone and it's gonna cost you money? What a slap in the face. I'd actually honestly rather see her go free and just outright admit that because she's elderly and sick she gets to do whatever she wants than give her a fine and pretend like that's justice.

She's probably destitute, no assets in her name. Little work history(worked under the table, if anything), etc...

She was probably ready to run at a moment's notice for the first 20 years, only in the last decade did she 'relax'.

Can we at least all agree that at sentencing, the court should consider, as a mitigating factor, the good she (perhaps inadvertently) did in introducing the phrase "hot-grease death" to the lexicon?

2011-10-21 02:25:41 PM
There is no statute of limitation on murder. I can understand the confusion, though. How does one hold a 75+ year old woman accountable for anything? A bigger question is how many lives are affected, young and old, by the lack of accountability women, in general, enjoy and exploit.

It depends on what you're being asked to doubt. If police arrived to find her standing over her burning husband then it doesn't create doubt. It seems that in this case there is not much doubt, it's just that she escaped and there wasn't enough followup to catch her.

If she maintained from the beginning that she wasn't there, or if she was fingered based on witness, etc. then perhaps.you need to question the police version. If the police involved have since been discredited for framing people, intimidating people into false confessions, etc. then yes there is doubt.

But there are some crimes where people are caught red-handed, basically admit they did it, and it is just a matter of bringing them to justice.
