It has been my experience that most managers are a little deluded.

Management are for those who can stomach firing a person who may lose their marriage, house, health, and retirement, all for the sake of a few quarterly pennies of stock.

Even if it is your job, firing someone in this employment market is like kicking a naked man out into a blizzard, then locking the door behind him.

SDRR: It has been my experience that most managers are a little deluded.

What I've learned so far:

1) Be very wary of people who want to manage.
2) Unless it's some position of general company/department oversight, managers better know how the F their subordinates work and be able to complete any task they assign themselves.

Firing somebody sucks but did you expect the manager to jump out into the blizzard with the firee and lock the door on the way out? My guess is the manager also has a marriage, house, retirement etc. Just a guess with zero citation but I'd bet most managers don't get stock options, just the upper echelon.

You obviously have never written software for a large corporation.

FTFY. Seen many people that don't mean "I want to be a manager", they mean "I want to be the BOSS!"

There are corporations that see management as a legitimate skill set (HP, a few others) and then there's ones like mine that consider it what you do in your spare time (while still getting all your own stuff done, of course).

Best course of action if you're at one of the latter ones is to avoid managing people at all costs. Every time they put a team under me I make it my #1 priority to get every damn one of them promoted right past me & take their people with them. When I get back down to me & maybe one hot temp, I've won.

Close. Small Corporation.

But to reinforce my point. You've obviously never had your superior (not a dev) assign impossible tasks due to their ridiculous promises to their customer and their inability to be anything other than a "Yes-Man" and make it your problem when their told/shown that it's not technically/logically possible. But oh wait, that's because typically Large Dev shops somewhat have their shiat together, and generally the people doing the tasking know boundaries and that things may not always be linear.

Uh, actually, my experience has been just the opposite. The smaller orgs I have worked with were much better as the "managers" were also the senior developers and not only did they usually "get it" they could also do it. I guess I should have qualified my statement with "a large corporation whose main business is not software / tech related".

Here's a CSB, For about 5 years I worked for a large accounting firm, the last couple as a manager, and I invented the term "Middle Manager Disease" while there. It is the condition whereby someone who has no background in what they are tasked with "managing" does everything possible to interject themselves into as many things as possible, making them horribly more complicated and convoluted than necessary. Then, they can "appear" to manage those things. it was hilarious. I used to have no end of fun there.

Anyway, I wasn't taking a swipe at you. Sorry your small company sucks. You should look for a new job if it's that bad, life's too short. Trust me on that one.

If only our politicians actually worked this way.

It's somebody who performs an analysis.

That word can be divided into its two component parts:
Anal, meaning asshole
Lysis, meaning splitting or separating.

Therefore, an analyst is a person who busts your ass.

No, business process consulting is for those who can stomach firing people. Managers don't make those decisions anymore.
