Oh this will fun.

2011-10-21 09:18:28 AM
Anyone claiming that climate scientists are alarmists only trying to protect their grant money will have to think about that one for a while.

Or the flip side, anyone who says that wealthy conservatives use money to encourage researchers to kowtow to their agenda need to ponder this as well.

2011-10-21 09:18:35 AM
Wait, you can't just BUY your own scientific conclusions?

2011-10-21 09:18:50 AM
Is this the thread we go "derp derpity deep deep Soros" but since it is a conservative donor we actually rage against him?

In unrelated news, a large gas leak at the BerkeleyEarth Project offices detonated early today, completely destroying the building.

2011-10-21 09:19:45 AM
I'm pretty sure" it is Obama's fault" will be the conclusion when the results are released.

2011-10-21 09:20:02 AM
Sounds like they didn't think their cunning plan all the way through.

I was reading a report on the BBC News' website about this study (which didn't mention who funded it) and realized that we're the only country on the planet who pretend that man-made global climate change is imaginary.

/One of the Koch brothers funds a bunch of stuff on PBS

10 is actually pretty significant.

Depends how they react to this actually. If they now pull any further funding from this group because they don't like the results, then you could still say they use money to encourage researches to kowtow to their agenda. There's no indication that the Koch brothers knew the results of the study before it got released.

That's because all the rest of the scientists in every country on the planet are all in on the big liberal conspiracy to destroy America!

Sheesh. Everyone knows that.

2011-10-21 09:27:04 AM
But my uncle sent me an email linking to a blog where some guy who used to read weather reports on the radio 25 years ago says it's all a hoax to get research money!

This doesn't mean that the Kochs didn't "encourage" researchers to be their mouthpieces, it just mean that if they did, it didn't work.

2011-10-21 09:27:12 AM
We'll see how it plays out over time. One of humanity's enduring tendencies is to deny anything we have little or no control over. I say that because if it has gone up one degree by now, there is no quick fix available.

Good thing I moved to that 2nd floor condo, eh?

I'm sure the sun is to blame, and by extension, God.

You destroy the planet or the economy and your wealth means nothing, these douches all amass fortunes that will last multiple generations but make it so the whole planet won't.

I'll do a test and send this link to my dad...

1000 to 1 says he still doesn't believe what it says because ___(insert conservative conspiracy theory here)____.

This is a great study and helps answer questions for the people who are intellectually honest. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the people railing against climate science and climate change are the intellectual equivalent of cult members. So... nice try, but it isn't going to change anything.

Well, maybe this will convince the Koch brothers and conservatives that this is a real issue that they need to take seriously. That is probably the craziest sentence I have ever written.

2011-10-21 09:30:58 AM
I'll wait for the long-form report to be published, which I'll then claim is an obvious 'shop.

2011-10-21 09:32:18 AM
They also fund PBS Nova, which is one of the few television shows that explains global warming in any detail -- their politics have never shown up on that show near as I can tell, disconcerting that it is.

2011-10-21 09:32:26 AM
These debates are such a pain. The facts don't care how people feel about them.

The truly scary thing about climate change is that there is no real way to stop it. The politacal and economic advantages of coal and oil as energy sources virtually gaurentees they will be used until either they are pretty well used up or fusion becomes a practical energy source. Any other energy source is just tinkering around the edges.

It may take 100 or 200 years to reach that point, but I see no way to avoid reaching it. The fuel will be burned, the co2 level will rise very significantly and climate will change. A lot, and mostly for the worse.

yea, you can find studies like that all over the place. All written by people wanting to jump on the band wagon and get some research money. Afterall, the only way to get published is to agree with the silly idea. The boys at the CRU admitted that a long time ago.

United States citizens have already demonstrated a higher than average propensity to deny established scientific conclusions.

Yup ... the anti-science movement is incredibly strong in the US. Most countries don't have to struggle with this. They consider AGW real and just argue about what to do about it.

2011-10-21 09:38:54 AM
All we can pretty much do is prepare, in some way.

Even if we cut our emissions way way down, there's still China and India.

Another trigger is a massive super volcano eruption.

Let's not pretend that because one study flies in the face of its corporate masters that all industry studies are to be trusted.

You are a known liar. Consequently, your unsubstantiated assertion is not credible.

Yeah, the Kochs may be evil billionaires, but they are not science deniers.

On a trip to DC earlier this year, I was surprised to find out the Smithsonian Natural History Museum has a terrific human origins exhibit sponsored by none other than David Koch.

Going in my dad joked at our expectation that we were about to learn of the origins of the earth 6,000 years ago. But I have to give him props: it was easily the best exhibit on the subject I have seen.

History has shown that we can innovate and change faster than this. Statements like these are just another tactic of the anti-science movement: "It's too hard so let's not try!!"

I think the Czech Republic does too. Or at least, did at one point in the last few years.

1) Institute carbon taxes
2) Economic advantages of coal and oil disappear versus cleaner sources
3) Hope it's not too late, and the damage isn't too severe.

The Koch brothers get a bad wrap because, well, they are stinking rich, and not afraid to fund causes they believe in. They also gave the ACLU $20 million dollars to fight the Patriot Act. Anybody who thinks their motivation is solely their bottom line hasn't been paying much attention.

Yes especially if you were the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation employee who screwed up. You need to be pondering your resume.

Carbon burning vehicle transport is a big contributor. Get the electric car deal worked out, a lot of this does suddenly stand a chance to improve. That and more mass transit, more biking to work, etc. electric cars do work, its just nobody really is building gas stations for them yet too often.

In Seattle, you can drive your Prius or Leaf up to the plug outside the football / soccer stadium and recharge. So it is possible to green commute to see the Sounders or Seahawks. Little stuff like that, just do it.

Cut gas usage per person in cars then start making it mandatory for other countries or we tax your imports. Might work.

Why should the left get all the $$.

And I'll bet the Koch brothers will fight tooth and nail to keep it from being submitted for review.
