Opportunity Zones? Yay Newspeak!

2011-10-21 08:17:46 AM
For his sake, I hope the Opportunity Zones are not located near the Free Speech Zones.

To qualify for zone status under Cain's plan, a given jurisdiction will have to enact policies the unions consider anathema - such as the elimination of the minimum wage, the provision of school vouchers, or the declaration of a zone as a "right-to-work" area.

And there it is.

2011-10-21 08:44:43 AM
I thought opportunity zones were genitals.

My tax form is going to be awkward.

I feel for you, subby. Picking a tag for this must have been farking torture.

2011-10-21 08:49:26 AM
They include the elimination of minimum wage laws, which the Cain campaign believes "crush teen employment

Target and McDonald's simply can't afford to pay teenagers $7.25 and no benefits whatsoever to stand at a cash register ten hours per week, and it's class warfare to suggest that they should.

skinnycatullus: For his sake, I hope the Opportunity Zones are not located near the Free Speech Zones.

Oh, no. No free speech if you live in the Opportunity Zone. You actually have to give up some of the constitutional rights while living there. After the first amendment though, you get to choose which other ones you can live without. You have to choose at least 5 though.

I'll race you to the bottom!

I'm actually kind of embarrassed for Herman Cain. This is a whole new level of stupidity for him.

I think Herman Cain should just declare that the rent is too damn high and be done with it.

2011-10-21 08:57:11 AM
Wow. It's like they're trying to find out the absolute best way to fark over people.

Try this one:

Herman Cain thinks all abortion should be outlawed, but the government should not have a say in it. (new window)

As far as I'm concerned, that's a reasonable position. "I'm personally against it, and wished it never happened, but it's not feasible or constitutional to actually stop it."

It's a reasonable position except that he's also in favor of Roe v. Wade being overturned.

2011-10-21 09:23:38 AM
And if you have any doubt that he's a complete idiot on the abortion thing, here's his retraction. (new window)

I understood the thrust of the question to ask whether that I, as president, would simply "order" people to not seek an abortion.

My answer was focused on the role of the President. The President has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey.

So, his thought process on his taxes, which will cripplingly raise taxes on a majority of Americans, is to demand that Americans make themselves poorer.

No wonder the GOP loves this guy. He's a farking moron.

Hey, people won't be unemployed if companies can pay them $0.10 an hour. They will, however, be indentured servants for the rest of their lives, essentially owned by the company.

He's inconsistent on that issue.

MORGAN: But you've had children, grandchildren. If one of your female children, grand children was raped, you would honestly want her to bring up that baby as her own?

CAIN: You're mixing two things here, Piers?

MORGAN: Why?

CAIN: You're mixing -

MORGAN: That's what it comes down to.

CAIN: No, it comes down to it's not the government's role or anybody else's role to make that decision. Secondly, if you look at the statistical incidents, you're not talking about that big a number. So what I'm saying is it ultimately gets down to a choice that that family or that mother has to make.

Not me as president, not some politician, not a bureaucrat. It gets down to that family. And whatever they decide, they decide. I shouldn't have to tell them what decision to make for such a sensitive issue.

One of the cornerstones of the economic policy of a serious candidate for the US presidency is literally "Create ghettoes".

I'm really trying to resist the urge to caption pictures of concentration camps as "Opportunity Zones".

As explained on the website fairtax.org, longtime proponents of the fair tax estimate it could reach 30 percent; Cain's advisers put the figure at 23 or 28 percent, depending on how one runs the numbers

A 28% national sales tax would do wonders for the economy. As in, I wonder what happened to the economy?

2011-10-21 10:45:16 AM
I'm still unclear on the conservative position on labor contracting companies. Why is it evil for a government to sign a labor contract with a Union for teachers, but good for them to sign a labor contract with a company to outsource janitors?

What happens if the Union changes itself into an employee-owned contracting company? Is it still evil?

2011-10-21 10:48:03 AM
He doesn't want them simply poor. Cain actually wants to push those struggling people over the brink into homelessness and destitution by destroying a person's ability to earn a living wage.

I still can't imagine how anyone can seriously support the GOP. It's mind-boggling.

Fark Cain. Give me socialism if that's the only other option. At least then I will know my neighbors aren't going to rob or kill me out of desperation to keep their families fed.

um...this does not sound like a very good plan. in fact, it sounds like a great way to create ghettos and ensure crushing poverty and massive social unrest.

that's just me tho. I could be wrong.

So yeah, little Third World labor camp zones, essentially. Nice.

Shaddup, poor people! You won't lose more money, I promise. All you will have to do to ensure this is to lose money.

Listen, living on $0.32 an hour in the Opportunity Zone may not sound appealing, but your spirits will be buoyed by daily blasts of John Ashcroft singing "Let the Eagle Soar" from a bunch of pole-mounted loudspeakers.

The opportunity zones will not contain any protest zones but your chocolate ration will be doubled.

You could replace the minimum wage with an hourly wage subsidy.

/and you could page for the subsidy with a combination of Pigovian and Georgist taxes.

More specifically, it seems to be "Create ghettos for poor people and use them as cheap labor."

This plan has just gone from stupid to evil.
