I loved this book when I was younger. It sounds like they're trying to stay true to the characters, and give a really good reason to actually show the Once-ler. I'm actually planning to see this when it hits theaters.

TFA " blah blah blah...bullshiat rationale...hollywood double speak..."

the REAL reason they have to show the Once-ler is they are taking a 13 page childrens story, that was a 22 minute animated TV special and turning it into a feature length movie. Much like all the extraneous crap they added to Horton Hears a Who, and I refuse to acknowledge the live action abortions done in Seuss' name.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
was very well done. Even had the poetic rhythm of the book was kept. I think it was the best adaptation of a Seuss book, not counting the animated TV specials (classics cant be measured).

They never really explained why he was so angry and mean to the Who. But seeing that it was made for kids, I can see why they would choose such an origin. Easy for kids to understand.

your entitled to your opinion... your still wrong. Fire Marshall farking Bill in a Grinch mask is just farking offensive. Just glad Chris Farley's dead, or we'd be getting him cast as the Lorax in a live action version.

shiat your right... my bad. though my point that taking a short story and padding it out to feature length means most production companies are going to invent shiat that wasn't in the original to pad the story, as well as in this case for merchandising.
If Geisel wanted to show the Once-ler he would have. As far as ignoring the intent of the original artist goes...this is as gawd awfull as what Rob Zobie did with his "Halloween" remakes... but its still kinda weak.
This is more akin to taking "300" and then having to add in entire non-sensical subplots to pad it for theaters.

FTFA: "The minute you make the Once-ler a monster, you allow the audience to interpret that the problem is caused by somebody who is different from me, and it ceases to be a story that is about all of us"

FTFY.

The beauty and enduring qualities of Dr. Seuss' work is that he was able to pack in full lessons in morality in very short page counts along with wonderful art and prose. The books are perfect as they are and making animated shorts are the best way to convert them to mass-media. When you add things in, when you alter the flow or the formula, you throw a lot what makes those books genius and special out the window. These full length movies are nothing more than money grabs that go against everything that Dr. Theodore Geisel believed in when he gave us these stories.

it reminds me of an interview with Francis Coppola about his "Dracula" where he went off on "I've added levels and meanings to the Mena and Draculas relationship that even Stoker didn't realize" (then why put the Authors NAME on the title if your just going to make shiat up?)...in much the same light as I'm certain Geisel fully intended a series of fart jokes be in Horton...he just didn't have the page count... *eye roll*

"Snitches and Sneetches with stars on their Breaches" could be a live action movie set in the jewish ghetto and showcase a clan war between two opposing Rabbits. They could have hiphop free verse battles to determine who is better.

Errm anyways I'm glad the Lorax will be animated and not live action. Though I really wouldn't have chosen DeVito as my first pick for the Lorax's voice.
Like all the other Suess properties, this reimagining will probably fall short of both the story and the original animated short.

/I have a sneaky suspicion that an Ipod (or generic mp3 player) was originally being used by the Once-ler in his tree chopping scene.

Wow that's what you've been reduced to now? Just making up words instead of spelling them out?

Funny how conservatives are the ones completely unable to understand the concept of "conservation" while getting virulently angry at those who do.
