Having lived with iOS (in my phones) for the last 3 years, using a friend's iPad and owning an HP Touchpad and an Android tablet myself, I've decided that the iPad is just not a great user experience, at least, not for me.

Its inability to use flash is a real detriment to web browsing. Also, when I got the iPhone, I went nuts and bought a bunch of apps. Now, the only non-Apple app I've used since the last time I cleared out my processes list was the Roku Remote app. So, lack of apps was never a problem for me (hence the Touchpad), but the inability to use Flash is.

Amazon Instant Video, PlayOn through the browser, Zero Punctuation, Gametrailers.com, Youtube, the list goes on. However, the one I use it most with is Amazon Instant Video, where I've got a few seasons of my favorite TV shows. Does your iPad let me watch Amazon Instant Video (without having to go through PlayOn)?

I think it might be. I am able to view porn on my iPhone because there are plenty of free sites that cater to the format. I barely encounter flash on my windows laptop.

I had an eeeTransformer for 3 or 4 days before I returned it, and my wife recently got a Galaxy 10.1 for textbook reading and I really don't feel that a tablet is a useful form factor. Every time I pick up a tablet to mess with it, 10 minutes later I realize I'm on my Thunderbolt and the tablet's lying next to me.

I think they could be great for any industry where you carry a clipboard, but I have found it to be completely useless for personal use.

The tablet market is a two-horse race between the iPad and the Kindle Fire. Since one is high-end and the other low-end they don't even compete that much against each other, but between them they have the whole market covered. I don't know why the other tablet manufacturers even bother.

That's irrelevant. What you asked me is where I was going that required Flash, and I answered. As I said, Flash is an important part of my browsing experience. If I keep using something that gives me blank spaces, I think it'll frustrate me a lot.

And yes, I know that PlayOn works on the iPhone. I already have it.

*Shrug* There's a youTube app, and I have Netflix.

If the thing you use the internet for most is from a company who not only produces a competing product, but has been in several high-profile pissing matches with apple, I can see how it wouldn't work for you. It's not really a detriment to internet browsing, though. It's just that the one service you use the most doesn't work.

Here's the thing that gets me: 99% of Flash video sites encode their video in H.264, which iOS plays natively. So why they don't strip the Flash wrapper off and serve up H.264 for devices without Flash, I'll never understand.

//I had my computer completely Flash free until Chrome started bundling Flash with their browser. Now I just block all Flash with a plugin.
//I won't use your site until you serve it up in a format that isn't made of failure and the tears of baby squirrels. I don't need your services.
//This also goes for restaurants. I have many places to eat that don't abuse me with utterly vile user experiences.

Of course it has nothing to with Windows Phone or similar Microsoft products, thanks to the power of patent rights Microsoft actually makes more money of Adroid Phones than they do of their own.

AdamK: i'd buy a tablet if it just streamed my PC's screen and cost sub-$200

Problem is you'd be using a mouse-based interface on a touch screen. I occasionally use remote desktop on my iPad to get some work done. It's not unusable, but it's also not a great feeling. People at work will come up to me asking if an iPad will work on the company network (they want tacit permission to get a toy and claim it's for work) I explain to them how the the Exchange integration works, etc etc and then make it very clear that the terminal services on it are a poor substitute for what we use the TS for. Mostly data entry.

I was at a seminar recently called "Integrating Apple in the the Enterprise." I was really hoping for good solutions on securing network devices and getting better interoperability with a Windows 2008 domain. They spent about 10 minutes on getting active directory working on OS X, and then spent the entire time telling you to buy VMWare. So basically it was a seminar on paying a lot of money for thin clients. It was a very annoying afternoon that was a waste of time.

Like any tool, it's best not to try to shoehorn in a product for purposes it really wasn't designed for. I like my iPad because it's a nice device to carry around when I want to do mobile work with our companies network (site surveys, device configuration, Visio editing etc). But trying to sue one as a terminal is pretty poor.

What exactly do you use "flash" for? I only find it on badly designed restaurant websites, the rare video that hasn't been converted to h.264, and idiotic games (which aren't worth playing to begin with). In other words - the lack of flash doesn't impact the vast majority of people out there. And mobile devices that do "support" flash do it in a way that makes it completely unusable.

/flash is dead - get over it.

The thing is they have styluses (stylii?) for capacitive screens. The issue isn't the lack of precision of the tablet interface itself, but the lack of precision and speed on a system that isn't designed for touch screens (Current Windows/Mac/Linux iterations).

It's the whole reason MS is pushing Windows 8. 7 was designed in the back end for a lot of touch input. The problem is the GUI really wasn't. 8 is trying to bridge the gab between a desktop OS and a touch interface with Metro because using desktops how they are now with anything but a mouse is uncomfortable and slow.

i like the stylus for PC, it's great if you do a lot of graphic/cad work (where a kb/m stops being comfortable)

for data entry or just web surfing it's probably bad/uncomfortable but i wouldn't know

i like how Apple made general recreational computing-use ergonomic with the ipad (basically doing what they tried to do with the mac for 30 years), i would like it if somebody else did the same with actual work-load stuff tho, something apple has never been interested in

And I guess that's the divide. Our business does brokering for customs, cartage, and warehousing. So it's all just filling in fields and working with Excel docs. It's a giant pain in the ass to use a touch interface for that. CAD, graphic design, etc would be a good use of it, but I don't know how well it would translate using virtualization/terminal services.

The article seems a little vague. Are those figures the actual retail sales, or just the shipments? Because we've already seen certain manufacturers ship large quantities of tablets, and sell very few. Also, the huge price cuts on some tablets indicates they are not selling well at all.

Youtube has an IOS app, one of the first. Playon has an app. I don't see one for AIV (first I'm aware of that service, I live outside the US), but like you said, it's available through playon which is appified.

I've used an iPad for years - web, streaming video, games, you name it- and I've personally been struck by how little the flash thing has been an issue. There are lots of legitimate complaints about iPads, I'm just not sure how significant this particular one is.

As someone who has an iPad and recently picked up one the firesale HP Touchpads, I'm getting a kick...

The Touchpad is fine, but is in no way better than the iPad. Its touchscreen is less responsive, Flash playback is abysmal (stuttering, hangs up, etc), and being a dead OS offers little as far as future app updates. It's heavy, plasticy feeling, and just not worth the money they were originally charging. Then again, I picked up a 32GB version for $149 + tax, so that made it a good buy. I'll probably give it away, though, because I really don't need it (really like the iPad better).

I don't own an android tablet, but outside of an SD card slot (for loading pics directly from a camera without a farking dongle, apple!), I fail to see any advantage over an iPad.

Of course, that's, like, my opinion man.

2011-10-21 04:20:14 PM
So basically it comes down to whether you want to use flash or not. iPad users insist no sites use Flash. Users of other platforms insist they use many sites that rely on Flash. The iPad users respond "No you don't". And the world continues to turn.

//This also goes for restaurants. I have many places to eat that don't abuse me with utterly vile user experiences.

You realize you can disable the flash plugin on about:plugins ?

So what app is better for musicians on android, because i did do some research but haven't been able to find one.

Or are you just a hater that can't realize there might be a reason that someone would want to use something you dislike? Are you really that small of a person?

Amplitude is good for guitar players, but you can get that on Android or the i-pad. NanoStudio is okay, but no there is nothing even close on android for music creation apps. I don't think you'll see one anytime soon.
