When you search, what you want back is not a million blue links. What you want back is one correct answer.

Fark you, I want a million blue links. I want at least half a dozen correct, but different answers.

Also, no one is ever "years ahead" of anyone else nowadays. Google could build something as good or better than Siri in no time. And probably are.

I didn't stop reading, but yeah- I realized this from the get-go.

The dude is either deluded or just lying. Yes, Apple is ahead of the curve with Siri. Yes, it seems like a useful and cool technology. Google and Windows will have something similar in their next release. As always.

And- being the front runner is often NOT a good thing. I remember back in the dot-com bubble days everyone using the term "first mover advantage". Its complete BS. The first mover is often (not always) a lame duck that the eventual competition studies, finds flaws, and releases something better.

Look at Google as a search engine. They came on the scene much later than Alta Vista, Yahoo, Hot Bot, etc. Who's winning now?

Because any cat owner would tell you: also owning birds is a dissaster waiting to happen. Your pussy would have eaten your tits.

About the only thing I use the Google voice commands for on my android phone is to navigate with google maps while driving. It's completely useless for sending text messages. For some reason when I say "send text to John... on my way to Tim Hortons be there in five minutes" It sets the message with a blank send field and the message says "to john on my way to Tim Hortons be"

Completely useless at sending texts. But works great as a gps.

THIS
even once siri/clones get better at sending txts, that's all they will be good for. GPS, voice dialing, voice texting.

would we use this to write a book? fark no. to take a picture? fark no.
to write long fark.com screes? FARK NO

plus this is APPLE@!!@!
THIS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD
like newton and all the other PDAs did?
like how segway changed everything ??

GOOGLE changed how we search. we stopped using all the other search engines and use google now.

that being said, iPods changed how we listen to music.

That actually works fine for me. I still like Siri's ability to read incoming messages, take verbal response and read back a preview, and send, without having to look at the screen.

But the "text so and so such and such" works, though I think I may have had a couple issues at first. It even works if I just say a last name for times when I have more than one contact with the same first name.

No, I like choice and variety. Not a company that paid Apple to be the "correct answer"

That's called browsing. It's a fine and respectable leisure activity. But it's not what most people want their web search to do.

I agree it's not a good plan to let a single entity become the gateway to all information, but "variety" is not useful for the common case where users are searching for well-established bits of information.

You know what works best for sending texts? Morse code. I've got no problem sending and receiving it while driving down the road. Added bonus: It's not illegal, even in states with anti-texting while driving laws, and you don't have to use your eyes to do it, just a finger and your ears.

That was my first thought... if you think apple has any where near the talent of Google you must live in an alternate universe.

Apple had to purchase the small company that developed siri.. all they did was polish it up a bit.. (which is Apples forte.. polishing turds and branding it as the new chic thing).

Too funny.

I have found it to be really good, but I only use it from the keyboard to fill in a text box. It stops too easily and cuts you off, I agree with that, though it looks like they got that fixed with android 4.0.

It is sort of funny seeing a computer try to do reference work. Watson, yes, Siri, no.

While we all have access to more information than ever before in history, there is also overwhelming information illiteracy.

It depends on what I'm looking for. Unless I'm doing research, I'm never interested in anything outside of the top 5 results because I already have a very clear picture of what I'm trying to get to. That's about 80% of my searching. Probably more.

Agree.

I just had to replace a phone and considered the 4S. For me, I decided that turn-by-turn directions was more important to me at this point.

For that, plus a physical keyboard (plus a sale at Costco) I went with a Droid 3. It's one major limitation was the camera shutter speed, but the Vignette app seems to address that.

I just loaded Siri competitor Vlingo yesterday, and so far am not too impressed. Among other things, it's pretty flummoxed when someone has more than one email address. It seems to alternate between always picking the first address in the list or just guessing.

Jesus, what a load of shiat.

He's claiming that Siri can understand speech in ways that I haven't seen demonstrated can be done with text, which is a medium that's much easier to process. Until someone at apple demonstrates some of these features that have been held back, I'm going to have to call bullshiat on pretty much everythign this guy is saying.

even still , that's more variety than just "one correct answer" which, again, can be manipulated with the right amount of $$$. i'm sure there are niche things people look for with, say, repairs or shopping. but if I'm looking for , let's use computer hardware as an example, i don't want my "one correct answer" to be Best Buy.

You're not looking hard enough. Nothing he's claiming Siri does is actually all that remarkable. The technology isn't new- Apple's just the first one to productize it effectively.

2011-10-21 02:17:41 PM
I thought Siri doesn't really use an Apple-created search engine, but rather uses a variety of different third-party search engines.

Hmm, just checked the wiki article and it says it uses these engines:

OpenTable, Gayot, CitySearch, BooRah, Yelp, Yahoo Local, ReserveTravel, Localeze for restaurant and business questions and actions;
Eventful, StubHub, and LiveKick for events and concert information;
MovieTickets, RottenTomatoes, New York Times for movie information and reviews;
True Knowledge,[15] Bing Answers, and Wolfram Alpha for factual question answering;[16]
Bing and Google for web search.

Oh, look. It uses Google. Surprise, surprise.

Agreed. I didn't know that my Android could do a lot of what Siri can do, it can send texts, search, etc... all by voice command but I never use it. It might be because I don't drive so hands free stuff just isn't very useful to me.

If there's one thing it's Google has consistently gotten right it's "more data = better for everyone."
Then again, if there's one thing Apple has consistently gotten right it's "The simpler everything is, the less confused and angry our customers get."

There's probably room for both, but for the same users. I see its biggest user base being people who want to know "who played that one guy in that movie," and have difficulty clicking twice.

Seriously, it's mostly a toy. Someone at work was playing with it and the voice recognition just isn't that solid. That's always the problem with speech. It farks up so frequently that typing is quicker.
