Pop-quiz hotshot, how many Republicans voted for it?

If the number is greater than zero, I will accept your narrative, otherwise fark off.

2011-10-21 08:38:37 AM
50-50 is still a win if the GOP allowed a fair vote - Biden could break the tie.

48 counting Leiberman.

And you can always count on two of the following corpocrats to torpedo Democratic legislation in the Senate.

Ben Nelson
Max Baucus
Gaylord Kent Conrad
Jon Tester
Mark Pryor
Claire McCaskill
Joe Manchin

I don't even know why they call themselves Democrats. They don't just vote against bills. They vote against ALLOWING A VOTE. They filibuster their own f*cking party! They're blatantly fighting for the other team.

fark the Senate with its ridiculous rules and horribly old guard, out of touch Senators on both sides. But the GOP is still the majority of the assholeness.

"3 Democrats voted against it! DEMOCRATS' FAULT!!!"

Two things.

First, the problem is these Senators are horribly old guard and run even more conservative than conservative members of the House of Representative. The Senate is almost exclusively older guys more set in their ideology and more beholden to outside interests because of the larger scale of their elections.

Second, hee hee, Gaylord.

2011-10-21 08:59:36 AM
Considering they needed 60 votes to break a philibuster, they would need at least 7 Republicans to vote yes to have ANY chance.

2011-10-21 09:00:43 AM
And just to be sure, this wasn't even a vote on the bill. It was a vote to BEGIN TALKING about the bill. Because in the Minority Leader McConnell era Senate, it's not enough to have 51 votes to pass a bill. First you need 60 votes to begin debate on a bill. Then you have a long debate. Then you need to enter a cloture petition. Two working days later, you need 60 votes to invoke cloture, which contrary to popular belief does not immediately end debate, but rather starts an additional 30-hour clock for debate. Then, and only then, can a vote on the bill itself be taken, on which 51 votes pass the bill.

Fark Republicans and their obstructionism, and fark any single person who will defend them in their mission to ensure that no bill which could improve the economy is considered.

Claire McCaskill's got no farking excuse. She's a rookie, and she's working off of the absolutely batshiat notion that if only she votes like a Republican on a few key issues that she'll win an election over an actual Republican.

To be fair, part of the fault is Harry Reid and his refusal to get around the horrible bullshiat Senatorial rules, and his own out of touch attitude.

At this point, I just want some party to have 60 members in the Senate so shiat can get done. Even if it is a bill to legalize the murder of abortion doctors, at least there will be progress (regress).

//not serious, unless it's Dems

Democrats are useless even with 60 Senators. I think they need at least 62 Senators to be remotely effective. It's in the current Senate bylaws, along with the rule that Republicans win as long as they have 44 Senators on the floor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you ALWAYS biatching that he's too left, and needs to be more centrist? Wouldn't lopping off a few of your own party around the edges mean your legislation has moved towards the center?

And since we know both sides are bad, doesn't alienating both sides provide, in some cases, an endorsement for the idea that the legislation might be pretty good, and different from the normal Washington bullshiat?

This is more or less the most transparent bullshiat they could have tried to pull. Both sides are corrupt, but the Republicans are ideologically bankrupt too. They've nothing but dogma and unity left, an empty shell.

So, now that the job killing bill is defeated, the jobs should start rolling in any day now.

This is irritating, yet beautiful: Obama and the Democrats will continue to propose popular bills which will actually help the country and the Republicans in both houses (along with the Blue Dogs) will vote them down, which will allow Obama to run an offensive campaign against Congress and the GOP next year.

2011-10-21 09:22:01 AM
So in other words, if it wasn't for the filibuster that the Reps have plenty of enough seats for, it woulda passed with the help of the Vice President.

Now some conservadems could use empty votes to score some sort of political point. Whichever that is.

Technically, Kryptonian heat vision is a beam of intense thermal energy, not a laser which is reflected light. Just like Cyclops' optic blasts aren't in fact lasers, but force blasts. Oh god, I hate myself.

The solution is to make these assholes actually carry out a filibuster, not just threaten it...

Stand up there and tell the country why you don't support this bill, tell us what would be a better solution. Read the phone book. But make these clowns follow through on their threats. Let the American people see them for what they are - Greedy corporate stooges, who do what their masters, the lobbyists, say.

But none of them are interested in that discussion. The GOP is only interested in stonewalling the Obama Administration as they are more concerned with making Obama a one-term president than actually helping people in this country. The Democrats voting against it are more concerned with keeping their cushy jobs than actually helping people in this country.

Spoiled, petulant children, the lot of them.

Yes it is only republicans using the rules against the other side. Reid has never "filled the tree" to disallow gop amendments. He has never voted to over rule the parliamentarian. Most of the senate committees don't allow any gop input on the bills, and you wonder why there is no compromise.

No. Much like it doesn't occur to a dog not to lick the asshole of another dog.

Anywho, someone brought up a great point on some news program last night - let the Dems keep reshaping and reforming this bill over and over and even if it gets shot down over and over, it will be talked about for at least 6 months and the American people will get sick and tired of seeing the Republicans obstructing everything.

The word partisan is overused, but it's the best way to describe the current Congressional climate. It used to be that people could cross both sides of the aisles. Now it seems like a tug of war to see how many Democrats can be lured over to the Republican side of a vote or how many Republicans can be pursuaded to vote with some semblance of sanity. The idea of both sides crossing the aisle has become so farking foreign it's amazing.

This. Why even have 535 congressfolk? You only need 4. One for each party in each of the 2 houses of Congress. Done.
