(Palm Beach Post)   It only took Universal Orlando twelve years to realize having two intertwined roller coasters that speed along their tracks at up to 60 mph and pass within 18 inches of each other might be dangerous   (palmbeachpost.com) divider line 71

Because it wasn't dangerous? It's not like pieces of the coaster were flying off. People with loose shiat on them were the problem.

2011-10-21 10:13:12 AM
It's been there for like 15 years or something. How many thousands have ridden on it without incident? Probably just some dumb kids throwing nickels.

2011-10-21 10:14:13 AM
Well it is Florida. That should explain everything. People let their children wander around next to ponds with alligators in them, Hell they even let their kids swim in places with alligators in them. Then when their kid is eaten they go "How was I to know this would happen????"

In related news, I was actually quite impressed with the harry potter section of the park. the HP Hogwarts ride was a blast, and the set pieces in the other areas were very well done.

I wouldn't mind riding the Hermione ride.

I hate this! Dueling Dragons thrill was the the actual duel. The coaster was just like any other coaster I have been on. But I got a rush from the actual duel. I think its lost its thing now.

And all because idiots, seemingly very few, didnt do their basic "Secure my personal loose items" crap. Now it ruined it for all of us.

Records show that Universal has reported five injuries involving the attraction during the past decade, including reports of chest pain, back pain and groin pain; vomiting; shortness of breath; and numbness in one arm.

5 injuries in 10 years? I'd say that's a good record. Hell I Cedar Point has probably had that many in a week. (Especially "injuries" like that). I do remember having to wait while they cleaned up a bird that had unfortunate timing... and no, it wasn't the Fabio incident.

Universal Orlando. Half the effort, much less space, and same price as the Disney parks.

Why, yes I am bitter about The Harry Potter section. You could tell that they knew what to do to make it awesome, but the suits said, 'don't bother following through, the people will pay the same if you make it as detailed as EPCOT or just half ass it.'

You can see the difference now in the Jurrasic park section. Disney's parks age as well as Sean Connery. Universal's efforts age like faces of Meth.

That coaster is the only one that actually made me feel woozy and disoriented. Sitting in the front row does it, I think.

What he said. They're average coasters but it was the synchronization that made it interesting.

FTFA: Precisely what happened in the two incidents remains a mystery. Universal will not discuss the findings of its review...

What the fark? Universal ran an investigation into why their ride caused a man to lose a farking eyeball, and they don't want to say why? Yeeeeeah, I think I'll go somewhere else rather than pay for the privilege of being blinded.

No, they don't. Honestly, injuries of any kind are very rare at any sort of professional theme park.

Loose objects? Sounds more like deliberately thrown objects. We were at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City this summer, and the riders on the Mamba seemed to get a kick out of spitting on the crest of the hill, and seeing who went "Ewww!" as the train caught up with their loogie.

The new Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster is pretty cool. But yeah, once you've sat in the front car you're ruined for any other car.

Speaking of Cedar Point, the Gemini is awesome. First new roller coaster I remember from back in the 70s when I was a kid. Still like slapping hands with folks in the other train. Last trip to CP, the ride stalled and we had to get out and walk down the big incline. Good times.

2011-10-21 11:32:36 AM
The issue wasn't the ride or how close the trains were, it was dicks who couldn't be bothered to secure loose articles, or worse - people deliberately throwing shiat.

A better headline would have been "Dueling Dragons will no longer duel because of assholes."

Couldn't agree less. Disney is OK if you have children, but is lame otherwise. I have had a blast when I have gone to Universal Islands of Adventure. All the Orlando Disney Parks combined have less fun adult rides than that park. Not to mention that it is not the same price (at least it wasn't the last time I went a couple of years ago) but cheaper.

Universal parks are ok (spiderman was awesome when it came out), but i will never forgive them for making me wait in line 45 minutes to see an animatronic triceritops. For some reason it was the longest line in the park, I didnt know what it was. Everyone got to the front and just saw this big stupid thing that twitched and whatnot and it sucked ass.

\shame on my ignorance, I know..

I'm sure there was no thought of "danger" when they were designed to be that close. Certainly people don't ride roller coasters for thrills or anything.

Go enjoy the merry go round subby. Make sure to ride in one of the seats and not on a horse that moves up and down.

That's the beauty of the annual pass. Once you've tried everything, you can just go an enjoy the things you like. But it's a crock that after spending $200+ for one you still have to pay like $75 for the Express Pass for shorter lines.

LOL, my dad used to be a mechanic at a theme park and would often come home with all kinds of stuff that fell out of people's pockets. People in general just don't look out for their shiat.

True... I always wore sandles to Islands due to the water rides. So I tend to sit on them on that ride. Guess I am smarter then the average coaster rider.

It's shiat like this that has kept Son of Beast closed the past two years and in danger of being torn down - even after the park removed the world's only wooden coaster loop on that ride.

Perhaps, but still not smart enough to know the difference between "than" and "then".

5 potentially bankruptcy-causing liability suits.

"At your own risk" would do this country a bit of good. But the legal caste must be appeased.

Yea.. Disney has everyone beat with Fast Pass. I think if you stay at a Universal Hotel, you get free front of the line privledges (or you used to).
But I'll stick with Disney. Everything (IMHO) is better. If I want a horde of adult amusement rides, Six Flags Great Adventure is 15 minutes from me.

Disney doesn't have "fast pass" - you take a ticket at the ride and come back at a specific time. Its universal that has the fast pass and you don't have to stay at the hotel to buy it.

My kids had science day at Cedar Point, which is awesome. The only problem is you take your ride measurements using a TI-83 calculator and some stuff plugged into their data port. So you have a roll coaster filled with kids holding calculators in their hand.

I went as a chaperone and would see a good five or six TIs go flying every ride. The next year the school bought everyone little holsters for the calculators.

This is why theme parks should shake-down their customers for change before the ride.

Let's see, that would make you, um about 97 years old...

Just went to Universal in August. My kid loved Potter. Screw the haters in this thread.

The only ride I came close to puking up my butterbeer on was the Simpsons ride.

What a shame... I have enjoyed the front coaster on both the blue and red dragon multiple times.

This is almost as heartbreaking as the destruction of Enchanted Oak Tavern... *sigh*
