Seattle Mist player Jessica Hopkins tells us the youth teams may pave that new path. Maybe one day she says, girls won't have to wear lingerie to get people interested.

Not that I don't like seeing women in lingerie, but that's a really depressing statement.

Then again, so is this:
Meanwhile three former "LA Temptation" players are reportedly suing the League for, among other things, being paid less than $8 an hour (California's minimum wage), not receiving overtime, and not getting a cut from the 2010 $100,000 LFL Championship purse.

"We do not pay salaries because LFL player are not employees," said McMillen, referring to the fact that players in the league are considered independent contractors.

I dont have any problem with starting up youth leagues to get girls into playing football. Maybe you might get some girls good enough to play something more than a kicker on the boys team.

Im all for girls playing traditionally male sports, especially hockey.

They really should unionize. I love the idea of the LFL, but only if they are actually sharing in the spoils and getting a fair piece of the action.

Tampa's home opener is tonight, but I don't think that's a proper place to take the girlfriend for our anniversary.

That's exactly what I thought of. If these players made tips, they'd have to give 50% to the house.

Apparently, not all the players do, from that quote. They love playing football, and realize that, at present, this is the only way to make it (barely) economically feasible.
By comparison, the Women's Professional Football League, which plays full-tackle, pays players $100 per game.

FFS, they're told exactly where, when and how to do their jobs, and they even wear uniforms. If they're not employees then nobody's an employee.

Theaetetus: Not that I don't like seeing women in lingerie, but that's a really depressing statement.

Not really, if you understand what the average person watches sports for: to see the best athletes compete. I guess you also have to be honest enough to admit that females don't hold a candle to males when it comes to the major sports. They can't build that much muscle, and their lungs are inferior.

Now, if you are feeling really sad for the ladies, you can also add this: women, in general, aren't particularly interested in watching sports AND those who do also prefer watching the NBA over the WNBA.

As it pertains to their pay, they deserve to be paid well for their work, relative to the income brought in by the sport, just like any other athlete.

Give it another 50 years the way things are going. Worse yet, because they're not employees, they don't pay medical bills for on-field injuries.

Oh, and because bras occasionally get ripped off during play, the women have to agree in advance to an accidental nudity clause, and can get fined $500 for wearing anything extra to cover up.

Because no one watches college hockey?

You know the LFL won't have sex with you right? :P

/completely agrees with you on all the pay/medical care, etc.

Theaetetus: and can get fined $500 for wearing anything extra to cover up.

And? This is not an issue. I'm sure these women are smart enough to know that the LINGERIE football league is about sex moreso than sport.

Males aren't offended at wearing very little to play their sports btw. See swimming and pro wrestling. I don't know who to blame for gender differences, but there is nothing wrong with men paying money to willing women to show some skin - and women pay good money for women to show some skin too (see modeling, which isn't about what men like, but about what women buy). The women should be negotiating to earn what they need to, and having read this thread I wouldn't support the league given their conditions. Strippers get paid phenomenally, so I don't know why women as beautiful as some of the LFL chicks are willing to do what they do. Heck, they should go strip on the weekend and then form their own league to play football wearing what they want: they'd probably make more money that way.

You can make the argument that in various cases strippers/hookers/whatever are put in a position where they can't say no to that lifestyle despite not wanting to reveal their bodies, and you'd be correct. Of course if they said no, they'd be reduced to the same situation as a male who never seriously had that option to begin with.

Sounds like the LFL is taking after the NCAA template of everyone makes money but the players.

/I predict a real chance that the LFL will overtake the NHL and NASCAR as "the fourth major league"

Fighting is a game misconduct. Heck, checking is a penalty.

And you can blame the Europeans because they whined that the North American chicks with sticks played too hard.
