The German Aerospace Center, which led the development and construction of ROSAT

Now watch as France waits for ROSAT to come down vertically and wonder why it's taking a detour through that forest to the north.

I actually saw what I thought was a shooting star / really bright meteor about an hour or two ago. (3:00am CDT here right now. ) Was the satellite what I saw or has that not happened yet?

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

"Wernher von Braun" by Tom Lehrer (1965)

Gather round while I sing you of Wernher von Braun,
A man whose allegiance
Is ruled by expedience.
Call him a Nazi, he won't even frown.
"Ha, Nazi Schmazi," says Wernher von Braun.

Don't say that he's hypocritical,
Say rather that he's apolitical.

"Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That's not my department," says Wernher von Braun.

Some have harsh words for this man of renown,
But some think our attitude
Should be one of gratitude,
Like the widows and cripples in old London town
Who owe their large pensions to Wernher von Braun.

You too may be a big hero,
Once you've learned to count backwards to zero.
"In German oder English I know how to count down,
Und I'm learning Chinese," says Wernher von Braun.

I fully admit I was higher then Toucan pussy , I'm not really sure *what* I saw, It was just really bright and it moved really farking fast, and wasn't an airplane / helicopter / satellite. It was about as bright as the LED on my phone was, just really really high up.

Smidge204: Phil Plait frowns on your shenanigans, Subby.

Bad Addendum: many people think that a meteorite, after it hits the ground, is very hot and glows red. Actually, meteorites found shortly after impact tend to be warm, but not hot at all!^

=Smidge=

That's great for meteorites n' all, but what about satellites? Surely they, made of metal, passing through the atmosphere won't be cold when they land.

Anyway, why are all these articles accompanied by "don't know where it will land", "can't say with certainty". If they know where it is, where the Earth is, and in which direction it is travelling surely they can have a good stab at it? Maybe they don't want to say because the target area is the size of France, and someone might panic and die in Marseilles when it hits Calais, thus making a prime candidate for suing?

Slaxl: If they know where it is, where the Earth is, and in which direction it is travelling surely they can have a good stab at it?

It's a question of aerodynamics, and in particular the not-designed-for-air design of the device. Will it hit the atmosphere, begin to tumble and quickly burn up? Will it catch a bit of air on one side and rip itself in half? Will it catch enough air to actually fall on this orbit or will it just bounce off again?

Add to that the complication of the huge ground speed -- if you miss your guess as to when it's going to fall, even by a single orbit (which might be only a couple of hours), you've now got a potential impact area that encircles the earth. Ramp that single-obrit error up to a more realistic level and you can see how hard it is to pick out the landing zone.

Once the thing actually gets into the atmosphere and they can track it for a couple of minutes to see how it's falling they actually can give a pretty good estimate of where it's going to hit. But that's about 10 minutes before it intercepts the ground, so there's not a lot of warning.

So this satellite will not break up into a bajillion little pieces and scatter all over the planet?

German engineering. Suck it Detroit.

While it's in orbit, before atmospheric drag becomes significant, its future ground track can be predicted. You can see this on sites like www.heavens-above.com (new window). When it does finally come down it will be more-or-less along that track, but it's hard to predict exactly when it will happen. Given how quickly it's moving, a small uncertainty in the re-entry time translates to a big uncertainty in location.

Coffee hot. There's a bunch of radioactive stuff up there (e.g. old reactor cores from Soviet radar satellites) but I haven't heard of anything that's expected to re-enter in the near future.

"Dead Like Me"

Spoiler Alert - the picture is the star and protagonist. This scene is the introduction to the show, just as she's saying 'shiat', and just before she gets hit and killed by a toilet seat from a space station in a decayed orbit.

Despite the goofy premise, and some mediocre spots, the show is kick-ass excellent. The followup movie is okay, but not as good as the TV show.
