He's regime uses violence and murder to silence the press and the opposition. That makes him a dick and a tyrant worthy of needs killin'.

That's un-American! He's farked with and continues to fark with the oil industry and our oil companies, so he must be ousted from power at the first moment possible!

/honestly the only reason the American press is against him.

2011-10-20 11:25:27 PM
Chavez is a dictator that believes he can solve all problems if he just had all the power. He should ask Mugabe how well that works. (incidentally, repblicans should take note too. Getting all the power doesn't allow you to solve all the problems. Lstening to everyone and normally provides the best solution, and it may be one you don't like.)

...Because that's so different from what every other South/Central American government does. The U.S. only cares when the country with human rights violations opposes our foreign policy.

There's an awful lot of win here for a cancer thread. Oh, and...

Chavez, 57 and in power since 1999, has maintained that he will recover in time to win reelection in 2012.

Their elections are so one-sided, I'm pretty sure he doesn't even have to be alive to win.

2011-10-20 11:40:28 PM
I see everyone is happily gobbling down the US propaganda about Chavez.

Carry on.

Well, it helps that the propaganda is, generally speaking, true. But then the question is also raised as to WHICH propaganda you are talking about since there is propaganda supporting him, attacking him, and everything else in the spectrum between virtuous flower child of perfect benevolence and vile cross between Hitler and Skeletor whose very piss is pure liquid malevolence.

To go on a tangent, he went to Cuba for treatment. I seem to recall someone claiming that Cuba had a really good (especially for a former Soviet puppet) rating in medical areas. Is this correct or some nonsense dreamed up by my dusty memories when CUBA was the one country that survived my Pandemic 2 plague?

That is correct, though their system isn't what it was when the Soviet patronage and sugar money was coming in; for a poor country, they still have a really good health system. (I'm sure someone will post the picture of the crazy guy sitting in his own filth to contradict me).

Consider:

Politically, for some time now, Chavez has been seen unfavorably in the U.S. For example,

He has been an influential member in the OPEC oil cartel of oil producing nations;

He has criticized the U.S.'s bombing of Afghanistan in retaliation for the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks;

He has stopped the Venezuelan military taking part in naval exercises in the Caribbean;

The U.S. military has been denied access to Venezuelan airspace, hampering Washington's war in Colombia;

He has been friendly to Cuba's Fidel Castro;

He has sold oil to Cuba;

He has tried to implement economic policies that are not always in line with the Washington Consensus/Neoliberalism ideology;

He has made Venezuela a potential alternative to the IMF for other Latin American countries for funding and loans, signifying a major loss of influence of the United States in the region;

And, Venezuela is also home to the largest currently known oil reserves in the world outside the Middle East.

Any one of those thing would be enough to get him onto Washington's shiat list and spin the propaganda machine into overdrive. But you can read for yourself:

Castro must not be long for this world. Hell, the guy's 85. I'm guessing he's next, if he's not dead already.
