What a country!

2011-10-20 07:57:34 PM
Such a difference between conservatives in Canada or really anywhere in the world, compared to the States.

2011-10-20 08:00:15 PM
Harper is still the devil!!

There, it's out of the way now. Good on these folks.

2011-10-20 08:04:27 PM
Well done. That's the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a Canadian.

This is why I love living in this country. Our most backwater, conservative, closed-minded section of government is still more open and caring of the people than the left-wing Americans.

To claify for American Farkers, we do have our own collection of far right, religous whackos and gun fetishists, but most of our center-right parties generally just give them bright balloons and ask them to sit in the corner rather than cater to their every whim.

The crazies do get humored somewhat at election time...

Alright. That's it: I'm packing my bags and moving to Canada. You conservatives can stay here and biatch about your 9/9/9 deals and your Bachmann-nomics all you want.

And here I am, maybe a five hour drive from the border, and I am in Bachmann country! No wonder there are guards at the border.

Even the "gayism is a choice!" senator opposes bullying here. I guess the flipside of a majority is that they can flip off their hate-filled base as much as they can the opposition.

I honestly don't know what to make of people who tolerate bullying then wonder why people treat each other horribly (and pass on their horrid behaviour) as adults - and don't get me started on legislators who wish to effectively legalize bullying LGBT kids and adults. We should be teaching children not to bully others, with methods of dealing with bullies taught as a secondary method of control.

Americans are horrible .... blah, blah, blah.

Look. America ain't an easy place to live, and no one ever claimed it was. If you want to be babied, move your ass to Canada. Otherwise STFU and realize that the United States is called the Home of the Brave for a reason.

Heck, we got protests in every major city right now because this is a hard farking place to live. We'll change. We always do. But it ain't the America way to do it over night.

You gotta have balls to live here.

This may be the only time these words ever cross my lips, (and this better not be an elaborate plan pass some stupid chirstian family values legislation) but "good work, Conservative Party of Canada"

As bad as America can be, at least we don't have the "Human Rights Commission" like Canada does. We have freedom of speech here, and it is quite nice.

Although, definitely awesome they did that. I wish the conservatives here would do that as well.

Why is it that any group with "Family" in their name is inevitably filled with the sorts of people one would expect to catch sexually molesting their kids?

The bar may be set at a different height, but you also have limits on your freedom of speech.

Go publish some kiddy porn. What? You can't!? Millions of Dutch citizens laugh at your lack of freedom.

You're saying "But a lack of kiddy porn is good for a society".

See? You just set the bar differently. Not wrong. Just different.

In Canada, you can trust the liberals/ndp to advance an equality agenda (ie, legalizing gay marriage), and you can trust the government to not repeal rights and freedoms granted by past governments.

Oh, and the tories realized a few years ago that the only way they'd ever usurp the Grits as "natural ruling party" is by completely silencing the social conservatives. It's not their votes the party needs to buy, after all.

Corvus: Most conservative in other countries don't basically try to destroy the country for political gain like Republicans here.

Even though the conservatives are in power here at the moment, they act like reasonable people who can be trusted to some extent.

When they try truly evil things, the general public tends to call them on it and they back down.

2011-10-20 09:24:00 PM
The only reason the Conservatives are on board with this now is because they failed to defeat it earlier. A mere five years ago the Conservative Party of Canada was the vanguard in trying to repeal same-sex marriage.

The only reason they are producing this now, is to distract people from remembering the fact that the god-damned Omnibus Bill is about to get rammed down our collective throats.

If you think the CPC produces feel-good videos for any other reason than to promote its own political health, you are giving them way too much credit, and being way too soft-hearted.

/yes, glad they are finally admitting their defeat publicly.
//no, they aren't doing it out of altruistic goodness or concern for anything but political optics.

TsukasaK: Sure is reductio ad absurdum around here...

Not at all.

I can't wear a swastika in Germany or Austria. Would I want that kind of restriction on speech/action/ideas in my country? No, but I can appreciate how Germans and Austrians have decided that limiting that speech makes their societies better for all citizens.

I can't threaten the president of the USA if I live in the USA or I'll be charged with a crime, even if my only crime is threatening speech. There's plenty of places where such speech with no action would not be prosecutable, but the USA has decided that threats against the president represent a unique and special kind of speech that is unacceptable to a well-ordered society.

I can't call all black people "vermin" and suggest murdering them all in Canada. I can do that in the USA. Canadians have decided that vile hate speech is unacceptable in an ordered multicultural society. Americans don't see it that way.

Nobody is wrong in this. Just different places to set the line between "acceptable speech" and "unacceptable speech".

What? Obama made one of these things ages ago. You guys as a whole are ahead of us in gay rights, and your conservatives are miles better than ours, but our left wing hasn't been that bad on this issue.

Republican may be many things, but they are not conservative. Some individual Republicans may be conservative on one issue or another...but, the party's overall approach isn't in the slightest bit conservative.

The Conservative Party of Canada's MP's and acolytes aren't that conservative either, in the sense that they don't feel that strongly about things such as privacy nor liberty.

In fact, they are more regressive / idiotic on these issues than hard-right Texan legislators.

In a minority government they held a free vote, which was promised in their campaign. Some Tories voted no on gay marriage, some did. Some liberals voted no some voted yes... The NDP and Bloc were pretty firm against repealing gay marriage.

After that they said it's off the table, forever. They are holding up their end of the bargain. Why beat the point to death? You won. Do you want them to bring it up again? No? Then let it go already.

Oh, there's a horn of plenty filled to the brim with reasons to criticize the idiotic Harper Government, this just happens to be one instance in which when the CPC adjuncts attempt to sweep that dirt under the carpet (like everything else they do which is ethically despicable) I speak up.

If you're a right wing authoritarian, please, vote for the anti-conservative Conservatives. If you're not, please, join us for beverages and other things that may land you in jail under increasingly regressive government.
