The Metallica bits sound alright. James' voice and guitar sound good, Kirk does some good work, Rob sounds great and Lars is Lars. What really farks this material up is Lou. It's like he's not even trying to anything vaguely resembling singing anymore.

/The lyrics are crap too, "I am the table" really?

I don't really care about Metallica, and I like most of Lou Reed's stuff, and I agree entirely. I laughed out loud at the third song.

I thought that's what the black album was for.

I haven't heard anything since that album that even made me want to pirate their subsequent music. Such a shame. I was a huge fan, right up until that crappy, crappy album.

Fark you, Bob Rock.

I like the way every Metallica song sounds exactly the same; that way the very instant you hear that monotonal wall of over-amplified aural shiat coming at you, you can change the radio station immediately.

2011-10-20 05:45:36 PM
I've seen this in so many other threads and now it's my turn....

Everyone knows there were no Metallica releases since ...And Justice For All, so what is there to steal?

Go and listen to Death Magnetic. People biatch about the digital audio compression ("loudness") but if you listen to it through headphones and not kajillion dollar sound systems it's a solid album. Also, no Bob Rock... the producer is Rick "Reign In Blood" Rubin.

A couple of those intro atmospherics are pretty cool, but those heavy sections are generic, throwaway type riffs, like the kinda stuff you make up with your buddies for a song called "I Wanna Get (In Your Pants)"

Does it have all the majestic subtlety and genius of their work before Bob Rock cockrocked them into making metal for soccer moms? I like some of what Rick Rubin has done with some other artists, but Metallica seemed beyond help last I heard them.

/listens to 5 random tracks from Death Magnetic on Youtube

Meh. It's better than the black album, but that's nothing to brag about. That's like being better at math than someone with Down's Syndrome. Yeah. maybe you are, but that doesn't mean you're actually good with math.

I had no idea there were dog prostitutes. I means, dogs don't even have a concept of currency.

It's interesting. Weird, it doesn't always work and when it doesn't it's hilarious, but it works far more often than I expected it to. Almost done with my first listen through and am surprised that it actually has some good moments - especially considering it's just Metallica riffing and Lou Reed spouting nonsense over it.

I wouldn't buy it, but I don't regret listening to it these last 50 minutes or so.

Actually. going back and giving it another listen, it's shiat. Lou farked up what could've been a good album. Goddamnit so much!

Hey guys, is this the circle jerk where we bash a successful rock band we don't like so we can feel better about ourselves? Or the circle jerk where we bash a band because they don't do the same ol shiat they were doing 30 years ago and became commercially successful?

I'll give you St. Anger, that album was absolute shiat. And Load and Reload could have been cut down to a single album of decent songs. S&M was pretty farking cool, and I was glad to see them release the content from Garage Days Revisited with some pretty decent newer covers they did. Deth Magnetic was pretty decent. I'll be the first to admit that they aren't the same thrash/metal band from their glory days, but they're still a pretty decent rock band.

It's the circle jerk were we talk about how the linked album is awful, though as I said above, I don't really think that is Metallica's fault.

If that were the case there'd be more comments about the linked album, which I agree is pretty craptacular, although I attribute that to Lou Reed being garbage. I mean seriously, dude sounds like me trying to sing when I'm drunk, and I sing like a cat in heat.

Has any band ever gotten more farking milage out of 35 farking decent to great songs? In 28 years? Unbelievable. And "Kill 'em All" and "Justice" aren't even that great, solid B albums at best. Yeah, "Lightning" and "Master" are great records, but tons of band have put out 16 great songs and aren't regarded as one of the best farking ever.

Queen. About 3 of their songs per album have been farking awesome, most of the rest were forgettable trash. I'm not saying they aren't a great band, because they put on a hell of a show, but many of the songs on their albums were crap, yet they're considered one of the best ever.

Add Rush to that. They had the seven songs on Moving Pictures, then add whatever other 28 songs you want.

Which would be hard, because they don't have 28 other decent to great songs. Maybe 10.

I agree with Queen being hugely overrated as well. I'm not sure when that happened either because I saw them on both "News of the World" and "Jazz" and they were playing normal auditoriums for regular prices and tickets weren't hard to get.

See, I liked the movie, when you're in a band at 18 years old, you all have something in common, drugs, chicks, metal. But fast forward 25 years later and now you have nothing in common with these guys, except music, you're married with kids, different outlooks on life, politics, and you've traveled around the world one to many times with these a$$holes".

I don't know about you but I have NOTHING in common with my high school friends. The only difference is that my high school friends and I aren't responsible for the well being of countless employees and 10 million in revenue each year. I'm amazed that any band of teenagers can hold it together with out killing or freaking out on each other after 25 years. I may not like the music but if a band can stick it out for all those years they have my respect, that's a tough gig.

The movie just proved how tough it is.

No, that movie proved that when you (as a band) get to the point where you think it's a good idea to release a movie showing what that one showed, it's time to hang it the fark up.

Jason Newsted stole that movie when he described the whole therapy thing as LAME. L.A.M.E. He's literally the only person in that entire abortion of a movie that made any sense.
