Only 1%?

The statistics I've heard are that 20% of people will suffer mental illness at some point in their lives. I'm lucky enough that no-one I'm close to has committed suicide, but I have a sibling with schizophrenia (she's doing fine now with medication) and a close friend who has suffered depression and sometimes I do worry about them and what they might do to themselves

I live in Estes Park, right outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. People from all over the world come here to vacation, and get married in this beautiful place. What most people don't know is we have a very high suicide rate here. People come here to die.
It's not reported. It's not published.
The only way you hear about it is on the Police and Park Ranger scanners. There are at least 1-2 attempts per week up here, and around the holidays, that can triple. A woman a couple days ago was the last attempt I heard about.
The town keeps it all hush hush.. because the numbers would probably put a dark cloud over vacation land if more people knew about it.

Generally people keen on the idea of that have a misguided perception of who deserves it:

Every morning I run the 3.5 miles from my place in the Marina to the base of the #1 suicide destination in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge. I've never seen somebody jump, though a sick, twisted part of me kind of wishes that some day I do.

I would expect that the majority of teenagers at least vaguely flirt with the idea before they grow up, get their hormones under control and get their shiat together somewhat.

Also, if you count people who engage in self-destructive behavior without admitting to themselves what they are doing the percentage should be a lot higher.

I saw someone jump to their death about three weeks ago. My work building faces I-84 near downtown Portland. I heard a commotion from my coworkers, and went to the window - a figure had climbed over the rails of the SE 12th Ave bridge and lingered for a minute. He then simply let go - I could see him jump, but the fall/impact was blocked by foliage. Traffic immediately came to a halt.

The Oregonian reported the next day that a man did indeed jump from that spot, and died en route to the hospital.

I had never watched a person take their life. But what I noticed more than anything, I didn't feel any emotion.

clip - When the Conservatives ruled both state and federal governments, men were 17% more likely to commit suicide than when Labour was in power. Women were 40% more likely to kill themselves.

In 7 years of working in 20+ story buildings, i've seen two suicides happen. Well, one was an immediate aftermath with scattered assorted body parts. The other one, I was rounding the building's corner on the way to lunch and someone landed 15 feet in front of me and splatted. No, you don't want to see that.

I came pretty close about three months ago. Thought I was being made redundant and my job is all I have. I sorted out my finances, deleted all my porn, wrote my will and farewell letter. I bought a length of climbing rope and researched the right hanging technique online. Then I settled on the venue - the contemplation room at work, nice and peaceful. The rope could be tied to a high window catch and I could garrotte myself sitting down.

Then I kept my job and I was all like WTF? That climbing rope was expensive. Still, it showed me how crappy my boring life is and I'm making an effort to change.

So, there are 245,267,292 people between 15 and, well, death.
So 1% is 2,452,672.
The population of New Mexico is 2,059,179.
An entire state worth of people, crushed under despair.

FunkOut: Well, some folks made plans but then found out that their family would just be pursued for the student loan debt then.

I realize how messed up it is, but suicide is a very real last resort plan for me. I am hoping that when I finish my masters degree program in counseling I will be able to get my license and find a job that pays enough to keep my head above water, but if it doesn't work out jumping off a bridge is always an option. Of course I am nowhere near that point right now, but its sad to say that the prospect of living with crushing debt and trying to declare bankruptcy if I cant find a job to cover the payments and living with that black mark for the rest of my life just doesn't seem worth it. Even if I can find some position that pays just enough to make the minimum payment on my loans, the interest alone would be enough to keep me in debt for a the better part of my life. I have lived many years under intense stress and I do not look forward to continuing that viscous cycle forever. Stress is hell on your mental and physical health.

And the really messed up part is that YES I do realize it was my choice to go to college, but if I had not attempted an education suicide would still be a distant option because I just can't settle for working a shiatty McJob for the rest of my life. And coming from a background of no family support at all, going to a trade school would still cause me to be in debt. It sometimes feels like there are no good options.

/Suicide is a distant option at the moment, but if I had to choose a way to go I believe jumping off a bridge would be the best choice.

What constitutes making plans? Like when I daydream of kidnapping my boss, torture him then kill him and if i know i'll be caught i kill myself first?

My coworkers stepson blew his head off after a bitter argument with his exgirlfriend who was totally using him. He took his handgun (which he had a lisense for and he was sober), walked out of a party into a friends backyard and blew out his brains.

He was 22.

It devastated not only those that witnessed it, but his family and the community. Within the hour of him killing himself, tweets had ripped through the community and we found out that another coworkers kids knew his stepson via mutual friends.

I know what it is like to live with dark, dark, craptacular thoughts, but please people, if things ever get so shiatacular, go get help and remember to always keep moving towards the eternal sunshine. It gets better. I promise.

It's not just your town. Generally speaking, the only time a story of a suicide is published is if the person was well-known, or the suicide caused some sort of other event that the news couldn't ignore. Not too long ago, a guy in my city jumped onto the freeway from an overpass and freeway traffic came to a standstill for hours during the peak, so the news outlets were pretty much forced to publish the cause. Otherwise they usually keep it quiet, because publishing news about suicides tends to bring out the copycats.
