Where was this song a one hit wonder? Kyrgyzstan?

Everyone thought he was another Bobby Caldwell.

Zero-hit wonder.

I've never heard of him, and never heard that song. And I was listening to all sorts of music in the 1980s.

I don't know where y'all are from but I remember this song well in Northern Virginia in 1980. He was no Aldo Nova but it is definitely a memorable song.

Wellon Dowd: Aldo Nova

Now there's a somewhat interesting story.

I remember that somewhat sappy song...I also thought it was about a grown man perving on a teenaged girl (like that creepy "Shakin" by Eddie Money)...around 1980 I was a young teen who had just discovered Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, music of that ilk. Adult contemporary wasn't on my radar. It's nice that he helped those kids out but about halfway through the very long article my interest fizzled out...squirrel!

Don't forget You're 16 by 34-year-old Ringo Starr.

Jesus that sucked. Now I know why I don't listen to adult contemporary. Don't recall it at all, and I grew up in the 80s.

As an ex Syracusan, I have seen Benny in concert several times- and he ALWAYS put on a awesome rock concert. Why his lamest tunes always got the most airplay is just another example of Benny's absolute horrid luck with every record company he was associated with back in the 80's/90's. Still, he did help right Link (new window)

This song reeks of couples-only time at the roller rink.

Was there anything other than Country on the radio in Central Virginia in 1980? We were close enough to DC to have some "urban" influence.

The only thing about this song that sucks more than the song itself is that fact that it was a hit TWICE.

That's just sad... BB King backed with horrible synthesizers.

Reminds me of how MGM added a chorus and an orchestra to the recordings of Hank Williams after he died.

It could have been worse. It could have been filled with 80's celebrities bopping along, pretending to play instruments, and mugging for the camera (new window).

You know what? He seemed like a nice guy. Most people in his position might feel entitled or angry at his current lack of fame. He seemed happy to not be a asshole drug addict that still had a few occasional fans here and there.

Gotta think people are idiots who assume that because they don't remember/recognize a song it didn't happen/was no big deal.

It's the 25th most played song in the US, ever.

Open your ears.

Interesting story, Benny, and good luck to you.
And yeah, the album is good.

I listened to American Top 40 religiously for most of my childhood and I'll be damned if I remember this dreck.

I thought "Into the Night" came out in the late seventies but I remember it well. It was a good song despite his overwrought bellows towards the end--"I'll--pick--you--UUUUHHHHUUUHHHHPPPPPPPP--and into the NIIIIIIIUHHHIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIITE!!!" That used to make me and my friends giggle to no end.

2011-10-20 04:33:03 PM
I'm not buying it. That's clearly a pervy song, and he's covering it up. I suspect he did give the kids jobs or whatever, but I suspect they got their story straight so they could all get a pay day, but they probably did have a moment of some kind. The girl might even believe the story.

/Young girl, stay out of my mind

Hey now...we had BOTH types of music here back then: Country AND Western! Thinking back, it seems like all of the non-Country stations were playing nothing but disco in 1980 (which had died about 2 years before, but we're always a little behind the curve. BTW, who is this "Lady Gaga" person?)

2011-10-20 05:53:44 PM
It was a hit twice 1980 & 1989 both made Billboards top 20. They should re release it now see if it can go for 3.

I have heard this song daily on sleazy listening radio for umpteen years and have never thought the singer was black. Ever.

I thought he was a pervert and the song sucks.

I grew up in the Mid-South (Memphis area) and clearly remember this song. I loved it then and love it now. Thank you subby for posting this. Wish Benny had a better manager and record label back then.

2011-10-20 11:20:11 PM
Wow. True story - I bought an album at local record shop back then and the clerk pulled out a Benny Mardones album and said "Do you want this album? He's supposed to be a big deal." So I said okay and he gave it to me and I played it occasionally but I could never get into it. It's the only time I got a free record from a record shop.

Me too, on all three counts.

I never liked Into the Night just because it's so overplayed in Syracuse. He had another song called Sheila C. that I remember liking a lot more, but I've always been afraid to look it up in case my memory is faulty and it really sucks. We're talking Mardones here, after all.

Nope. I was big in to top 40 music in the 80s, and this isn't even vaguely familiar. Apparently the guy was big in northern New York, but the rest of the country was spared.

I have a Robert Tepper album on vinyl that I've never listened to. I have no idea where it came from.
