It just seems like he was trying too hard to be "hip" or something, which in and of itself can be a symptom of racism. But I don't think the racist intent was there. Poor choice of phrasing. Move on.

He should've used the white-guy approved "Bro" or, possibly, it's variant "Brah".

He didn't mean "brother" to have any sort of racial connotation. He just meant that Cain is one of the good ones.

Preferrably preceded by "Don't taze me" and followed by "AAAUUUNNNGGGGHHH!!!!"

"Cain, Broseph, let me rap at you for a sec. It's like you're at a kegger right? Like you're toasted on that chronic and your boy Tom is all "Can I borrow some scratch for a keg cup?" and you're like "Word". Cause you know once Tom gets loaded he's like a maniac and that shiat is funny as hell. But then Brad comes over and he's like "Dog I'm broke as a joke can I borrow some money for a keg cup" and you're like, "Dude, I'd love to help out a fellow bro-ham, but I haven't got it". But, like, you do have it only you don't want Brad getting trashed cause when he's sober he's a top ranked wing-man. That's like how we should invest in shiat nationally. You know, look at your bros and decide how to allocate that beer money for the best possible party."

I heard Perry was going to break Blue Steel before the Iowa Caucus and then its all over for Romney, Cain and the rest.

At least he didn't refer to Cain as "my homie."

Some people use 'brother' like others use 'buddy,' or 'friend.' I've heard it quite a few times in my life, brother. I've been called 'brother,' and 'son' by a few people in my life who were not of relation. I don't think he was trying to be hip or racist, or what-have-you. Now, if he were to sling it out there all cool like and said 'brotha,' then yeah, I could see it being a problem.

As it is now, I think people are way too sensitive and are overreacting.

Did he carve the word onto a rock from his ranch and throw it at the black guy?

Yeah, they are. It still sounded stilted and un-natural coming from Perry. Even Hulk Hogan would raise an eyebrow at that one, brother.

Pretty much this. It's a southern religious thing. We're all brothers in Christ or some such. How do you think black people got into the habit or calling each other brother? Same roots

Which is more meaningful, I think.

I think... and I'm not sure, but I think, that this might be the dumbest bit of "news" to come out of the GOP nomination process this year, so far.

Maybe we're all misunderstanding Mr. Perry's intentions. Perhaps he meant "My Buddy" and misplaced the term.

Okay, I see. So since we have one clip of him referring to one man who happens to be African American as 'brother,' he's suddenly a racist. I gotcha.

The next time someone calls me 'brother' in a friendly conversation, I'm going to scream racist at them. Since that seems to be the way it works these days.

I'm agreeing with Sharpton. I think he was trying too hard to make up for the "ranch rock". So yes, he only did that with Cain, because Cain was the only black candidate in the debate.

I'm not saying Perry is conclusively not a racist. I would imagine he probably is. But I don't think he had a racist intent here, as I said.

Why is it so important for you to see this as a racist slight? I think we all agree it was stupid. Is that not sufficient for you?

My uncle talks like this, except he says it more like "I knew it was good when all the brothers were clapping along," TO a black person, then laughs and gives them the secret hi-five, as if he's "in." It would be embarrasing if it wasn't so comical.

Didn't Romney try the "dawg" term earlier this year. Am I crazy or did that happen at some point?

I think Romney is leery of bringing up dawgs.

When I was a kid, there was a country station in town called The Dawg 101.6 or whatever. I think when it's spelled D-A-W-G it's acceptable for white rednecks to use it too. Just D-O-double-G that's black people only.
