(Breitbart.com) Obvious They fired Hank Williams for expressing his 1st Amendment rights, so why does ESPN refuse to fire Susan Sarandon for calling the Pope a Nazi? Don't give me that "because she doesn't work there" crap. That's a cop out   (bighollywood.breitbart.com) divider line 143

Technically speaking, wasn't the pope a Nazi? I know that he may have been required to be in the Hitler Youth but even though involuntary, he was still a member. I mean if I am drafted in the Army against my will I would still be a member of the Army, no?

The Pope isn't our president, numbnuts.

He has the right to say whatever he wants. Nobody prevented him from exercising his freedom of speech. But if you're a public figure and what you say causes your employer grief, you have no guarantee that you'll keep your job.

Is it fair? Not especially, but that's reality.

While this was dumb, I feel the distinction is sort of important in that the current Pope actually WAS a Nazi.

Not by choice, I don't think, and I haven't seen any evidence at all that he believes anything like what the Nazi's did. But it is sort of an important detail. There's a difference between an unfair insult (Sarandon) and an actual lie (calling someone a Nazi who wasn't one).

2011-10-20 11:52:11 AM
Alright, so he was a Hitler Youth, which was a bit like being a Boyscout in Nazi Germany, except jingoistic, like everything else in Nazi Germany. As opposed to actually being a member of the Nazi party.

So let's drop the Nazi thing, and go with "The Pope knowingly, willingly, and intentionally does everything in his power to protect pedophiles, and has been doing so since before he was even Pope".

I like how "The Media" apparently has its decisions made by one dude, and that dude is being inconsistent.

You know, as opposed to different networks having different employment policies, and individual decision-makers with varying lines to not cross if you want to stay on the air.

It is too fair. There is probably a clause in his contract covering just this sort of thing. Thats like saying it isn't fair Tiger Woods lost all those endorsments because ya know banging girls from home depot and hooters is a 1st amendment right and all.

My take is that he was a full fledged Nazi. Just felt bad about it later.

I didn't know ESPN was a branch of the federal government. I must have missed that day in elementary school social studies class.

No, the Nazis were the ruling political party. If you were drafted into the Army against your will in 1968 (when the White House was held by LBJ and the Democrats had majorities in both houses), does that make you a Democrat?

I agree that Susan Sarandon should also not be asked by ESPN to sing the intro song to Monday Night Football.

I'm glad we got that cleared up.

He shouldn't have ever been fired in the first place.

Axtually, they fired Hank Williams Jr for his cumbassery.

Hank Williams was never fired by ESPN. In fact, there was no ESPN in his lifetime.

He was fired from the Grand Ol' Opry, though. Now that was bullshiat.

Actually Boecephus now claims that ESPN didn't even fire him but that he quit of his own accord because ESPN would permit him to show the world just how much of a redneck he is.

Hank Willliams Jr. was railroaded by the Lamestream Media and the Leftist ESPN. He is a true American hero and a patriot and we should all defend his right to free speech.

Susan Sarandon is just an entertainer, who cares what she says?

Goddamn. The First Amendment says that the Government cannot curtail your speech. It does NOT say that your business associates cannot decline to do further business with you based on the the things you say.

I thought conservatives were all about what the Constitution says.

FTA: Now, I disagree with the Pope on a wide variety of issues: he received anti-Semitic priest Rev. Tadeusz Rydzyk in 2007, he made a rather rotten speech at Auschwitz in May 2006, he was slow to respond to a British-born bishop who denied the Holocaust, and his perspective on the Middle East conflict is problematic.

So the Pope is a little soft on Nazism, but that doesn't mean anything!

/Will Breitbart fire the author for making these disparaging remarks?

Remember, businesses should be able to do whatever they want free of government.

Except fire people who call the President a Nazi. Then the government needs to step in.

The writer of this article wants porn banned, more military and law enforcement spending, giving the government the authority to wiretap whoever they want. Yep, typical small government conservative.

ESPN is a business that must maintain it's image to stay profitable. The author's issue is with the free market, not liberalism.
