Supposedly these are air rifles built from Chinese mil surplus AKs, and the hyperventilating Mounties are afraid that some genius gunsmith will convert them back to real rifles. Because the only reason Canada has so little gun crime is that you can't buy semi-auto rifles with big magazines there.

I highly doubt it. The propulsion system for air guns are totally different. BBs wouldn't feed the same way, it would have no need for an ejection system, among other things.

Sounds like they bought some surplus AK stocks and built a bb gun around them. But AK's are scary and people are dumb.

Here in my part of southern CA you aren't allowed to shoot real guns unless you go to a gun range, which sucks. No beer consumption of any kind, gunmaster on site at all times to stop and check your barrels evey few minutes, etc either that or drive way out into the boonies. I take my little plinker with me sometimes when I go hiking to scratch the shooting itch. I happen to be in the foothills of Mt Baldy right now about to take a grocery bag full of empty cans up on a hillside for awhile and get the sight centered perfectly on the this thing.

Except, of course, you CAN buy semi-auto rifles there with big magazines (okay, plugged for 10 rounds).

And some of that stuff is awesome stuff we can't get. Like semi UMPs, G36s, Sig 550s, and some guy got a MP7 since Canada doesn't have that dumb "it's way too close to a MG even though it isn't one!" douchebaggery that the ATF imposes.

The working definition of "assault rifle" in many people's mind is "it looks scary". I have seen people go apoplectic about a rifle with less capacity than a standard hunting rifle because it "looks like a machine gun".

The article and the RCMP are totally fear mongering the conversion angle. In order to make them into functioning firearms you would need, at the very least, to have a new barrel and bolt/gas assembly. If you're going to smuggle those parts into Canada, you might as well bring the whole gun. And if you're capable of manufacturing the parts, you might as well build your own AK since those are the hardest parts to make. Aside from the bolt/gas assembly, barrel, sights and parts of the trigger group, the rest of the rifle is either sheet metal stampings or rivets.

The biggest problem with the bb guns is they they are likely replicas under Canada gun laws and are therefore prohibited firearms. That is why all of the airsoft guns sold in Canada contain clear parts.

CSB time.

A long time ago like 20 years ago, we had a bunch of friends roleplayers and university students make an event that involved waterguns. The event was a "paintball" type scenario with a group of people playing the hostages and some playing the police. Some of the costumes were awesome, including one of the terrorists being a friend of mine who looked the part, beard and everything. Even the plastic guns were painted to look the part.

On top of it he was really into making joke and terrorist sounds ( Allah Ackbar! ). So he sounded the part, even down to his accent.

So the event was to happen at a private residence, in the middle of Quebec City. They had planned everything. Well everything but a noisy neighbor that always looked with his telescope in everyone yards and windows. The roleplaying was intense and realistic to the point that he called in the cops,

The cops come in, and the 1st guy they see is my "terrorist" friend, beard, lookalike ak watergun, and turban yelling with an arab accent. They call in the swat team, convinced its a real situation and surround the house. They even called in an helicopter.

At one point one of the "hostages" look outside the window and tell everyone that the cops are outside and its awfully realistic. The organiser, the "terrorist" friend i mentionned, comes outside with his plastic watergun AK and calms down the uproar. He got the police to call off the swat and helicopter, and even the news went "meh" and didnt report it.

So here, if he had a lookalike AK that looked this good, this CSB could have gone the other way.
