Canucks' Luongo use to taking the heat from fans

It's not all his fault! It would appear that there's a lack of D.

I keep hoping one of these days that the Mystery Machine shows up, and the Scooby Gang jumps out, tackles Luongo trying to make a getaway, and they go "let's see who this goalie REALLY is?!" and they rip off his face to find......

... DAN CLOUTIER!

No, he lost the Stanley Cup because the Bruins killed and devoured pretty well the entire Canucks' defensive core.

First career-shortening knee injury.

Roberto Luongo has a .852 save percentage. The only other starters worse than him are anderson in ottawa and halak in st. louis.

Anderson and halak have somewhat of an excuse...their teams are TERRIBLE.

Luongo? I've watched several of his games and...the losses are mostly his fault. His patented luongo-flop has failed him utterly.

First career-shortening knee injury.

Ironically, he started his career with the Islanders back in the late '90s/2000. They traded him to Florida after they draft Rick "Glass Body" DiPietro. I wonder if they regret that(more like they regret making Mike Milbury GM...)?

Serious answer? Seven years(or five if Luongo gets fed up, and even then..). They signed him to a 12 year contract in the 09-10 offseason, with a no-trade. They can facilitate a trade after the 7th season, Luongo after the 5th.

Breakdown:

2010-2011: 10M
2011-2012: 6.7M
2012-2013: 6.7M
2013-2014: 6.7M
2014-2015: 6.7M
2015-2016: 6.7M
2016-2017: 6.7M
2017-2018: 6.7M
2018-2019: 3M
2019-2020: 1.6M
2020-2021: 1M
2021-2022: 1M

This is assuming he doesn't retire before age 43, of course.

2011-10-20 05:32:58 AM
Luongo needs to fire his goalie coach. Since he came to Vancouver and learned how to play positional, he's doing terrible. He's inconsistent at best, and not focused on the game.

Do not remind me.

Now that you've got me started, let me break this down again. In order to have room to draft DP over Heatley and Gaborik, Milbury traded Luongo and Olli Jokinen to Florida for Mark Parrish and Oleg freaking Kvasha. So, to recap:

Could have had: Luongo, Jokinen, Heatley/Gaborik
Ended up with: DP, Parrish, and a waste of space.

The blood, it boils.

Doesn't help that the Canucks aren't scoring either

/same story in game 7.

Luongo has a history of having a rough start in October. The team's still a bit wobbly on the two-way play, with Kesler just returning and Raymond still not back in action, and our D is still learning to live without Ehrhoff.

That doesn't excuse the lack of scoring, of course. The Sedins have had flashes of their usual brilliance, but for whatever reason nothing was going in against the Rangers despite their best efforts.

Give them a few more games. Lou will find his groove, and things will start to click - as long as the scorers start doing their jobs right.

2011-10-20 12:26:36 PM
Lou Pinella approves?

2011-10-20 12:47:33 PM
It has been frustrating watching the Canucks. They are coasting around the ice, appearing to possess the mentality that they will simply be rewarded with first in the west for the playoffs. It doesn't help that the city has lost faith in Luongo, but what would one expect whenever you have a huge game on the line and you manage to fark up so bad. Then do it again, and again...
I liked what I saw when he came to Vancouver, but I cringed when I first heard about the contract he signed. That, or the brass naming him the unofficial captain. Ridiculous decisions coming from otherwise reasonably solid management.
So what is to be done? I say let Lu ride the pine and let him think about all those dollars he thinks he is worth. Schneider isn't a number one yet, but he seems to try to make the best out of every opportunity he gets. Maybe it'll get Luongo back in the game.

The real leaders of that team seem to be Kesler and Bieksa, but neither seem the be the particularly vocal kind in the locker room. That might need to change.

I thought it would the referee's fault that the Canucks were doing so badly. At least that's what we heard ad nauseam in the playoffs last year.

If kesler was vocal in the locker room then he wouldn't be able to sneak up behind people during interviews.

It was the referees fault they stopped falling for all the acting and diving. I haven't seen the Canucks play yet this year, so can't yet tell if the referees are "still" at fault.

blakelynch: He won Gold for Canada, took his team to the Stanley Cup game 7.

Alright, let's not get crazy with the revisionist history here. Canada won gold in spite of Luongo. Early on in the Olympic tournament there was a lot of talk about yanking Lou for the (at the time) hotter Marc Andre Fluery. He did not win that Gold for Canada. He didn't lose it for 'em, but he certainly didn't win it for 'em.

He was also reguarly TERRIBLE in both the first and final rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs last year. Have we already forgotten Chicago embarrassing him in the first round? And then the Finals...he didn't exactly keep Van in the games, now did he? Indeed, unlike in the Olympics, there's a reasonable argument to be made that Luongo lost games for Vancouver. You might also argue that the Vancouver D was depleted, but isn't that why you pay world-class goaltenders? To steal games when you need them to? What games has he stolen when it's counted?

Let's face it...like his pumped up tires are full of hot air.

He won two games at home. Like you're supposed to. And if I remember correctly his team played well in front of him in those games. Stealing games is when your team plays like shiat in front of you and you win 1-0. Like he should have in Boston.

He's not a clutch goaltender.

I was listenting to an interesting interview with Mike Babcock a little while ago talking about the injuries to the Canucks and basically he figures that's what killed them in the final round.. But hey, what does he know compared to the hockey 'fans' on FARK right?

Luongo's comment on receiving his new goalie mask the other day:

"It's a couple weeks late, just like my game."

The guy can make watching hockey frustrating at times, but damn that's a good line.
