I'm glad Huntsman's gamble paid off. Unfortunately I don't think it strengthens his overall chance at the nom.

Really? I though Romney came off pretty well. But then again, I don't speak derp, so I'm not sure that I understood most of what the other candidates were saying.

/not like I'd vote for Romney in a bajillion years though.

I didn't watch all of it, but the only one of the bunch who didn't make me want to reach inside my TV and biatchslap them was RON PAUL. Yeah, his ultra-libertarian Randian "free market" stuff can be somewhat wacky and unrealistic, but he's the only one of the bunch who doesn't need a swift kick to the gonads, and I actually agree with what he says a decent amount of the time, unlike all the others.

I've seen it said elsewhere and I've been saying it for a year: Ron Paul has the BEST diagnosis and the WORST cure of any politician in Washington.

"The banks are stealing the middle class' money!" YEAH!
"... So I'll close the fed and deregulate the banks!" .... WTF?!?

Wharrfest.

That could really take off, if it hasn't already.

I like it.

I approve of the coining of the term "wharrfest".

That's "libertarianism" in a nutshell for you. I like their skepticism of the government, but they pair that with a really naive faith in the "free market".

I don't want to trade being oppressed by a government for being oppressed by a corporation.

Or a state.

Shoot, states have shown themselves to be far more amenable to corruption, bribery, and oppression than the federal government has.

I only caught the highlight clips, but I have decided one thing:

If there is a god, Perry will will the GOP primary. And while it's clear he would get his ass handed to him, brutally, in the general, we would have the satisfaction of watching him cry like the whiny little prick that he is, when he debates President Obama.

Romney came close to it last night. For everything horrible that Perry has done to this state for the last way-too-many years, it will be worth it to watch him break down in tears like a bully taken to the principal's office.

What's the name of the tax-subsidized ranch you take beltway lobbyists to again, Governor? Speak up, please.

The only one who really won last night was Obama. All seven of those freaks have shown they can't even get along with each other or even make sense. It was nothing more than a few hours of lunatics biatching about the voices in their heads.

No kidding.

It was a "draw" (more like a stalemate, really) because NONE of the 7 have jack sh*t in terms of bringing something positive to this country.

Closing the Fed would be the right thing to do (new window). Deregulating banks would be insane.

quick question: if you created a 100% reserve requirement for banks, where do people borrow money from for things like mortgages and business growth?

Wimps, all of them. The Romney candidacy is over when, during a debate one of these gutless twerps points out that while Obamacare indirectly pays for abortions Romneycare ***DIRECTLY*** pays for abortions. The fact that none of them has gutted Romney like a fish during a debate with this fact astounds me. My money is on Bachmann ending Romney with this little nugget.

Yeah, and the first one to point out that Rick Perry was a Democrat during the entire Reagan administration ends his bid on the spot.

I disagree that Romney came across poorly in the back-and-forth on the illegal immigration issue, Perry looked desperate to attack Romney for hiring a lawn company that was using some illegals when he has come across as so weak on the topic at a Texas-wide level. You simply don't point at the mud on someone else's shoes when you're wallowing in a huge puddle unless you're so bad off that any attention is better than none.

And that Romney looked bad for how he handled the interruptions? I didn't see that either, it looked to me like he scored some points for schooling Perry on how to be presidential by taking turns to speak and not be a hick from the sticks getting into a shouting match, There was audience applause there for a reason right? And that was from a crowd I assume wasn't particularly Romney-friendly.

That was the worst moderation I've seen in some time, did Anderson Cooper have no agreed-upon authority to rein these people in? Perry and Santorum acted like the debate was their personal one-man show the entire night, Perry even came right out and said Cooper could ask any question he wanted but Perry was going to answer however *he* wanted. Surely some rules were agreed upon before the debate and I would've thought one of them was "you at least make a show of pretending to answer the question or your mic gets cut".

I'm no Romney fan but he was the clear winner here. Cain's 9-9-9 math was shot down repeatedly and his brief favorable poll showings are going to suffer, Perry looked barely able to hold state office let alone federal, and the rest come across just showing up for the free buffet. I don't know how Nate Silver saw something so different, makes me wonder if he is skewing things a tad not wanting Romney to get the nomination in that he has the most likely chance of unseating Obama, the rest might be more popular with the base but have a near-zero chance of winning the White House next November.

As the OP was suggesting, one of the candidates (don't recall which now) did indeed point this out during one of the earlier debates and Perry did a surprisingly good job deflecting it, that it took awhile for him to find his home and that he got to the party quicker than the time it took Saint Reagan to do the same. It was probably the one debate subject that Perry truly practiced to handle.

No one single accusation or claim against a candidate is crippling, what kills them is the words out of them our mouths that fall flat. Perry didn't drop to 3rd place because of attacks against him, it was because of his horriblly fumbling attack against Romney where it looked like Perry forgot his own name for a few minutes. The debates are all style and no substance, if you can't even get the *style* right you might as well go on home.
