Wouldn't be surprising. Dan DeCarlo got his start drawing racy cartoons for girly magazines. I read he used to do a lot of "special" commissioned work of Betty and Veronica after he got screwed out of any residuals for the characters he defined the look of and ownership of the other characters that he created for Archie Comics.

Wikipedia says that Cherry Poptart was drawn by Larry Welz, one of the early underground comix artists. The pieces I was referring to were done as individual boards, probably at conventions or by commission. I looked around a bit and found that DeCarlo did do a pornograpic comic late in life in the Archie style (which really was his style when you look at some of his earlier work) with different characters for Penthouse.

I don't think they were calling Gene Simmons a sellout. More like they were calling Gene Simmons a self-absorbed, out of touch, rich guy of barely average intelligence, who became rich thanks to being in the right place at the right time, but will happily insist that he did it all himself without any help from anyone and say that anyone else that isn't wildly successful has only themselves to blame. In other words, the perfect Republican.
