FTFA: He said: "In previous seasons our work has examined evidence of changing beliefs and life styles in the area through a study of burial practices in the Neolithic and Bronze age periods 6,000-4,500 years ago and 4,500 to 2,800 years ago respectively.

"It has also yielded evidence for what will be one of the best-dated Neolithic chambered cairns in Scotland when all of our post-excavation work is complete.

True fact: I've been to some of those neolithic burial & ritual sites in western Scotland, and they're awesome as fark. You go right up and climb on them or jump down in the cairn if you want to. No one's around to stop you.

I mean don't get me wrong, 1000-year-old artifacts are cool... but 5,000 is a lot cooler to me.

I thought redheads were from the older Celtic peoples, as opposed to the raiding Norsemen?

I'm not certain anyone's decided yet. I had heard that the Picts (pre-Celt) were dark. Dark-haired, maybe dark-skinned. There's a missing group in there (pre-Pict) as well, but no one knows a thing about them. I'm not even sure anyone's done a historical map of redheads, although it would be fascinating. I did think the red hair was from Viking or Celtic parts, although the Celts came up from... France?

/Pre-history around that area is way too confusing for me

Nope. 1000 years ago the Scotti had already migrated over into what we call Scotland today from Ireland, and there are plenty of natural redheads among the Irish. No real reason to think the Picts didn't have the gene, either.

Western Highlands, huh? Just think; the guy buried here may very well have been killed by my ancestors :)

The gene for red hair was in (or maybe developed in) most of the people's living around the Baltic and North Atlantic. The Nords had it, the Irish had it, the Picts likely had it, and I seem to recall some Roman sources commenting on the red hair of native Britons as well. There were redheads in the Isles long before the "Viking Age". Hell, Macbeth, who was a direct descendent of the Irish "kings" who lead the Scotti over to what would become Scotland, was a redhead, as was his father, and as was Alfred the Great, iirc.
