Especially if the camera is pointed at the keyboard . . .

My smartphone is infact sitting right next to my keyboard.

No problem for me. It messes with my speakers so I have to keep it further away.

My smartphone stays in my pocket unless I need it for a specific task. The hackers can listen to me scratch my ball sack.

I bet it can't record everything I type with my Olivetta Lettera 32. Unless you point the camera at it, of course.

my smartphone literally can't tell it is sideways half the farking time, this is lab fantasy

lol, you ain't lying. Do you ever find yourself trying to get it to go from horizontal to vertical orientation by shaking it?

That's hot.

When you set your phone on a flat surface you give it time to establish an expected baseline reading, which then allows it to be much more accurate.

It's a sensor that detects vibration, of course it's going to work better when you're not flinging it around.

2011-10-19 10:49:45 AM
So, if I understand this correctly the accelerometer is sensitive enough to detect the differences in vibrations created across my desk by my typing different keystrokes?

I find that difficult to believe and even if it could very prone to a host of other issues - such as the speakers also placed on my desk which if playing loudly could easily create enough noise to counteract the vibrations from the keyboard.

I bet this only works under extremely ideal laboratory conditions.

What if I hit certain keys harder than others? I usually beat the crap out of my space bar. Can it find punctuation in its dictionary? Function keys? Shortcut keys for words I may type very often?

What about when I have to edit something? Can it tell where I used the arrow keys to go back up and correct something? What if I used the mouse to navigate the document?

Or what if I use vi? Is it going to know if I am in command mode or edit mode?

Good luck in the real world

/bunch of rambling wrecks did the research. That figures.

OR... they could just email the victim the latest bonzie buddy type malware and get full access to their PC that way.

Only a scientist could come up with such a convoluted approach

Read the article again. If the phone has a decent accelerometer and is placed on a surface near the keyboard, it can detect what you type by the vibrations and decoding them. Minus the vibrations from the electronic typing, You'd have to be typing on a very quiet Olivetta Lettera 32... I'd suspect it would even be easier to detect it, using their reported methods.

FTFY. I was assuming it was capable of detecting the radiation.

Well, that makes... one.

Two, if you count being pointlessly contrary. Which I don't.

I never claimed it or any other was a *good* reason to learn DVORAK.

I tried Dvorak for a while. I never quite got up to my QWERTY speed, but I found it considerably more comfortable for extended typing. I gave it up because I was losing my ability to type QWERTY, and Dvorak also messed up all my vi keybindings.

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, but I found Dvorak helped my wrists significantly. The changeover was a biatch, though.

I want this made into an app, so I can spy on co-workers by innocently leaving my phone lying around.

Although last time I innocently left my phone lying around it was stolen, so perhaps that's not the best of ideas.

Here is the research paper described in TFA.

(Also, a paper on what you can do if you have a good microphone instead of just an accelerometer.)

I'm calling bullshiat. Was this written by the same guy a few years back who said he could steal all your network traffic datas simply from monitoring the the flashing activity light on a switch/router?

Compiling the most complete, thorough & detailed archive of /b/ as well as committing it all to memory?

It's not a question of practical this is, nor how convoluted, it's just impressive that not only was someone able to conceive of this, but that they were able to put it into practice. This is the kind of thing that is developed, and doesn't get used in its original form, but modified for something else, and 20 years down the road, not only is it common, but people take it for granted, and they don't bother to wonder where it came from, let alone know how people lived without it. Like I said, not tis specific use for it, but someone may come up with something else that DOES have that effect, but is based on this project.

Simply putting your smartphone next to the computer won't do that.

You also have to press the 'record' button.

(1) Touch-typing would appear more vulnerable. People who hunt-and-peck will have less regularity in both timing and keystroke force, rendering this technique useless

(2) If someone has installed such malware on your phone, your bigger worry is them eavesdropping on audio.

Exactly. Its just a fun project that indeed could lead to more serious projects.

Just like the stupid, fun applications I write for myself. Often functions and subroutines make it into my main library for use in real applications.

This. Especially if your phone has the password to the local wifi stored.

That said, it's still a really neat proof of concept.

I have a Logitech keyboard with macro keys, and have passwords on the macro keys... so it'll detect 1 keypress for my password.

Or you could get one of those Bluetooth keyboards and broadcast your keystrokes to a 30 ft radius. Oh, we're trying NOT to give out our passwords, I see.

Zip up your pants and put the sock away.

Mom will be down to tell you dinner is ready soon.
