If he still had his weapon, why didn't he shoot them?

AbbeySomeone: If he still had his weapon, why didn't he shoot them?

I'm sure he had a clear shot while they were running away! What a pussy.

AbbeySomeone: If he still had his weapon, why didn't he shoot them?

He no longer had proper documentation that he was able to carry a weapon.

He probably got drunk and lost his wallet/badge. They will probably turn up at a bar near his home.

The officer, described only as a man in his 40s

Cover up. Sounds like Lou was getting some beej from a hustler.

I've heard that the south side of Chicago is the baddest part of town.

FTFA: "Police had only a vague description of the gunman and none of the second man. No arrests had been made."

Wow. So the cops are even useless to prevent & solve crime when it happens to their own.

And if you go down there, you'd better just beware...

He got out of this uninjured. Better to have your life than some preconceived notion of diginity. Most of you would wet yourself staring down the barrel of a hand cannon.

I of course would have dodged the bullets like Neo; pulled my my service weapon; knee apped my assailents -- all without spilling my coffee.

An off-duty Chicago police officer was robbed of his police star and wallet as he was walking home in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

The officer, described only as a man in his 40s, wasn't injured during the 1 a.m. armed robbery

That's a damned shame.

I bow to you Your Boss, just that much quicker.

I've been held up at gunpoint twice. Pants-wetting terror did not occur. In fact I was so calm and detached it was almost eerie.

If the officer had chosen to shoot (at, unless he actually hit him, which would be unlikely) a fleeing person who was no longer assaulting him, he would be subject to the same laws as the rest of the population, and, at a minimum, face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and reckless endangerment. One assumes that these points were covered in the officer's legal and weapon training sessions, so he did his best to act legally and with restraint.

One could wish that all police officers were as well trained and responsible. Perhaps Chicago should offer a commendation to this officer . . .

Here's his description:

Six foot four
diamond rings
aka: Sir

He's got a custom Continental
He's got an El Dorado, too
He's got a .32 gun
In his pocket for fun
He got a razor in his shoe

Leroy looked like
A jigsaw puzzle
With a couple of pieces gone

Not totally correct. Tennessee v. Garner allows for deadly force on a fleeing felon if the officer reasonably believes that they pose a significant risk to the officer or other people. Two men walking down the street arming people at gunpoint would fit this category.

In fact, it is the responsibility of this officer, who was still in possession of his service weapon, to engage the two after they turned away. He should have drawn and attempted to arrest. He is not going to get a pat on the back but rather have to stand tall before the man and explain why he didn't do anything.

He didn't pull his gun and get his wallet back because I'm almost 100% certain he actually just lost it and didn't get mugged. I'm pretty sure a mugger sees a police badge in a wallet, they get the hell out of there without taking it.

This.

Your second indication that this guy is a liar is that the story is not credible. The first indication is that he is a cop.

He doesn't watch TV, right? So he would not have had any idea of what the public expects of him or Ninja moves to make. So, "on the job" FAIL.

Maybe he was raped as well as robbed and he is doing a bad job of lying to hide that fact.

I love the cop hate. Only on Fark does it matter what occupation you have when you're robbed. Any other job and we wouldn't be talking about losing dignity by being robbed at the point of a .357. Cops in Farkland aren't allowed to be victims, and apparently always carry their service weapons.

/now I'll be lambasted for being a pig lover or asked what precinct I patrol...

He DID have his service weapon. It's a good thing he didn't use it, though. It would have been much harder to cover up his .32 BAC and visit with the neighborhood hooker if he had. Seriously, nobody walking around at 1 a.m. on the South Side is sober.

/Which precinct are you with?

The article didn't say that. They just say that the robbers didn't get his service weapon. That doesn't mean he had it on him.

Fair enough. I read too much in to that, but I stick to my statement about sobriety and the South Side!

"Police had only a vague description of the gunman and none of the second man."

No wonder they're not releasing his name; information like this would interfere with his ability to convincingly lie under oath.

/CPD has had no dignity (or honor) at since1968 at least

The article never says he had his gun with him; it just says it wasn't stolen. I took that to mean that it was at home and it was only mentioned to assure the public that the criminal only had the .357, and not the cop gun. Maybe you're right, but maybe I am.

/Which precinct are you with?

All of them!

Any theory is on shaky ground when it assumes a cop is telling the truth.
