Avi: You got a toothbrush? We're going to London. Do you hear that, Doug? I'm coming to London.
[Avi arrives in London]
Doug the Head: Avi!
Avi: Shut up and sit down, you big, bald fark. I don't like leaving my own country, Doug, and I especially don't like leaving it for anything less then warm sandy beaches, and cocktails with little straw hats.
Doug the Head: We've got sandy beaches...
Avi: So? Who the fark wants to see 'em? I hope you appreciate the concern I have for my friend Franky, Doug. I'm gonna find him, and you're gonna help me find him, and we're gonna start at that fight.

On the eve of the adjudicator's arrival, some travellers moved into Callaghan Park. Before you could say 'gypsy scum' we were knee-deep in dog muck, thieving kids and crusty jugglers. We lost the title. And Irene lost her mind. She drove her Datsun Cherry into Sandford Gorge. From that moment on, I swore that I would do her proud.

I love when people make declarations about the law of the land not applying to them, are given 10 years to come into compliance, then act all shocked when the law is strongly enforced.

Hang on, I've lost my tiny violin. It's around here somewhere...........

The local authority says it's a simple planning issue - the 86 families lack permission to pitch homes on the land."

Normally I don't much care for Gypsies and the like, but my "personal property rights" views win on this one.

They bought it. Their land.

A better article from this spring. Seems they moved onto it first, then bought the land but don't have permission to build houses or live there. The picture in that article shows pretty clearly what the problem is - you can't develop in a greenbelt. Hell if I know why it's taken ten years to get around to evicting these people.

What in the fark is a "greenbelt land"? Is that some crazy Brit thing where they get to decide your land is worthless unless you buy a few MPs off?

FTA - "The Travelers, a traditionally nomadic..."
How can they be called nomadic, if they stay in one place for 10+ years.

Also FTA - "...Travelers bought and settled on a former scrap yard..."
Doesn't seem like they can just be kicked out if they bought the land.

They may own the land, but they didn't get planning permission to build on a greenbelt site. The law applies to everyone, even them. They knew when they started to build that planning permission was required, it's not like they just want to put an extension on the house - it's a whole settlement. Without any reference to whether the local community can support their requirements for education, healthcare, sanitation, traffic volume, crime control, refuse removal, power supply..... And as for them being homeless - most of them at this particular site have homes in Ireland. They choose not to live there, and seemingly none of them can be in work, as they don't pay any tax either.

2011-10-19 11:37:56 AM
This may seem optimistic of me, but I'm glad I live where I do and was born where I was. This seems horrifically unfair, wrong, wrong, wrong, and frankly, evil.

Hyppy: What in the fark is a "greenbelt land"? Is that some crazy Brit thing where they get to decide your land is worthless unless you buy a few MPs off?

It basically means you can't build on it because our country's a lot smaller than the USA and we'd quite like to have a few square miles of it left that aren't covered in concrete by 2050.

BTW, exactly what is the statue of limitations on being a Traveller? If you've lived in the same place for ten years and actually built a static, non-portable home, seems to me you're stretching the definition a bit.

TFA says zoning laws. They're using commercial property as residential. They still own the land & can sell it, but nobody can live on it. We can only guess that they spent the past 10 years trying to get the zoning law changed but ultimately failed. I don't know a lot about Travelers, only the stereotypes & the dim view they're held in, but I'm also guessing that the local authorities were in no rush to change the zoning laws to allow them to stay.

I feel bad for them. My paternal grandmother was Roma & fled to America when the Nazis started hunting them down. She and a few other Roma groups found refuge outside of Storrs, CT (near UConn). They were occasionally harassed by locals & cops for the first few years they were there. When my grandmother's older sister, Great Aunt Josie, learned English, she became the de facto liaison between the camp & the police and things calmed down. Biggest difference between my relatives & Travelers now is that, even with the negative stereotypes Gypsies had, my relatives could rely on sympathy (nobody was about to send them back to Hungary to face certain death). Travelers don't get a lot of sympathy. I believe theirs is a culture in its own right but I understand I would be a minority opinion in the UK.

2011-10-19 11:47:08 AM
the starting point is that gypsy / traveler children are massively outperformed by all others at school. the simple fact is that a huge percentage of gypsy / traveler adults simply cannot read or write. the kids also suffer profound bullying at the schools they do attend. i'm sure different people have different views on how blame should be apportioned for the problem, but that discussion really only hides the profundity of the underlying facts.

addressing that situation should, imo, take a significant degree of priority over spending in the region of 20 million ukp to 'clear' a couple of acres
