I had this exact same problem with a student and his tenor sax a few years ago. The bus driver said there wasn't enough room. My principal was a great arts supporter and she called transportation and told them, "There's room on that bus. Find it!" That was the end of it.

These are stupid situations that shouldn't escalate to this level.

In 8th grade I was playing alto sax but by sophomore year in high school I was playing baritone sax. The tenor cracked.

Anyone watch the video? I think the band teacher made a deal with the bus company so he'd quit, that kid's terrible.

I played tenor in middle and high school. It was easy to carry on the bus, provided I didn't mind being a little squished in my seat.

right 225 for a spare sax, and he gets to walk uphill both ways in the snow rain and tornados to school.

Carried my violin on a school bus for 10 years with nary a problem. Even the girl who played cello did. So why's a sax a problem?

Carried a baritone sax on the bus with me, off and on, for several years in high school. Even if the case couldn't fit beneath the seat, I could sit with it upright between my legs while sitting normally and the capacity of the bus was not reduced. A tenor should not be a problem. Bus driver is full of shiat.

He should try the soprano sax.

They should hit the superintendent up the side of the head with a bag of books and then with a sax. Then ask him which he liked better.

My daughter's alto sax was over $2000, and it's a good, used, one. I haven't prices tenor's, but I'm gonna guess they're more.

Respectfully sir, you do not want to be around an elementary school kid learning to play the soprano sax. Bagpipes would sound better at that age.

Great. Then you won't mind adding another bus route or two, since the ones you have are obviously overcrowded.

Common problem. Get a beater sax for your school locker and keep a good one at home. A kid who was seriously considering quitting the instrument over this will not require a $2000+ saxophone in the near future.

/schlep my baritone sax all over the subway and the world.

I guess I was lucky. My school loaned me the second tuba...probably because they had three tubas and only one tuba player.

I was also on the math team, and the computer club. Your son is a renaissance nerd and deserves mad props for breaking the nerd barrier. I hope he finds himself a hot, young teacher scandal.

Well there's the problem. It's only two-dimensional. It probably slices through the bus every time he sets it down.

Same here, I sat all the way in the back of the bus and left the bari in the aisle. Nobody ever complained. Well, except me who had to lug that thing around. Then one day I realized that I could practice at home on my alto and play the baritone at school so I did that instead. Too bad for me that it took me until my senior year to figure it out.

Haha I don't see that happening. This is the same as a little girl asking for a pony and her parents say "Ask me next year".

We have not enough tuba's for the kids who play. (This is a good thing). The middle school band played at their first pep rally/football game last night. We had 2 kids on Sousaphones and 3 on tuba's.

As for the hot teacher, I'd like him to wait till he's, at least, 16. Also, the high school will need to hire some new teachers.

They saw you coming. Especially if it is for a student that is just beginning, handmade tenor sax can be had for as little as 800€ new. A Yamaha tenor sax starts at around 1000€.

I got one for $225 off craigslist, it certainly wasn't perfect. But it was a working sax.

Whatever. We got it at the only place in town that sells them. It includes insurance, so repairs and maintenance are easy.

I bought my tenor sax off of some old lady for $250. It had a couple of dents and needed new pads (it was her husband's and he had passed away several years beforehand so it hadn't been played for a while) but everything else on it was in perfect condition.

I received my alto for $200 in similar fashion except it was like new.

That's what I did, I had back problems in high school that the doctors blamed on me carrying my tenor sax 13 blocks each way to and from the bus stop, so I kept my good one at home and rented one from school and kept it there. Turned out my legs were uneven, I grew out of it...

Fiance is a bari sax player, so I'm getting a kick. . .

I was a bit surprised to see it was just a tenor. The bari can get a bit difficult to transport (we can't take our two seater MR2 if I'm going to to the show), but the tenor should be easy. If kids can get duffle bags full of gym equipment on to the bus, then the sax should be able to go too.

/fiance also wants a full set of saxes, from subcontrabass to sopranino (not sure on the spelling on either of those)

2011-10-19 08:43:58 AM
Yeah. I carried a baritone horn to and from school with two bus transfers.

And I was a skinny little runt.

You people don't know pain.
