It kind of figures this would happen in my old neck of the woods. At least it wasn't the Wilds, just some weirdo with a bunch of exotic animals.

Oh my!

I've been following this. With deer hunting season upon us, every nutjob hunter is going to try to bag the trophy of a lifetime. I don't want to see any people get hurt, but those cheetahs and leopards (somebody said this guy had leopards) have to rescued.

Brings to mind a certain Bloom County strip.

Bears and lions are in eastern Ohio? How badly are they beating the Browns?

Sorry, I didn't see any mention of tigers. I'm afraid I'm going to have to disallow your reference.

There were tigers. Another headline wasted!

I'm waiting for more details on this before I get indignant about a single individual "owning" a private menagerie of wild animals such as this and then suddenly "releasing" them into the completely unnatural-for-them wilds of eastern Ohio.

He loved those animals, been caring for them for years.

When he hears they've escaped, the news will kill him.

I'm betting that some animal rights zealot did this.

I kind of hope one or two don't get caught. I hope they live long and become local legends in the woods and dark corners of eastern Ohio. I can dream.

It was unclear how many animals remained on the property when he died, but he had said in a bankruptcy filing in May 2010 that he owned four tigers, a lion, eight bears and 12 wolves. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had revoked his license to exhibit animals after animal rights activists campaigned for him to stop letting people wrestle with another one of his bears. Just the one lion is a very good thing. You get a breeding pair of lions and before you know it, you have a pride of them, just like what happened in Arkansas awhile ago. But the tigers are pretty bad news. Bears and wolves... They're doomed.

I wish this had been on the north end of town. Nothing I would have liked to see more than gorillas and cheetahs and camels rampaging through Dublin.

What I learned from this story is that there isn't any regulation on keeping exotic animals in Ohio. But bears aren't exotic, so there's that.

I'm quite afraid this was a crazed animal-rights*-dumbass. Shot with all the cages open... Jesus effing Christ, GET IN THE CAR.

* being for animal rights is fine, hell, I think keeping lions and tigers and bears in Ohio *is* stupid unless you can prove you can probably care for them... but burning down buildings and opening cages to 'let the animals free' are dumbass moves

My mom lives near where the animals were set loose. They're saying on the local news that the guy who set them free had just gotten out of jail and did this out of spite.

Lots of people in Southeastern Ohio own tigers and monkeys and all sorts of crazy animals. Some even do it in close neighborhoods with children around and everything.

There are no crazy animal rights activists around there. None. They'd probably get shot.

From your link: The deputies, who saw many other animals standing outside their cages and others that had escaped past the fencing surrounding the property, began shooting them on sight.

This makes me angry. I mean, I understand that they probably at that time had no other way of trying to contain the situation and keep the animals from further escaping, but it still pisses me off that it had to come to that.

:(

Yeah. It's scary and west-virginia like the farther in that direction you get. You can literally hear the Deliverence music playing if you crack your car window.

Lutz said the farm has been a problem for years even though Thompson had permits for the animals. He added that stricter state regulations are needed for so-called rescue farms.

so the sheriff doesn't like the guy and his animals and tells the deputies to just slaughter them. from the linked articles that seems like what is happening and it piss me off too.

He said four deputies with assault rifles in a pickup truck went to the animal farm, where they found the owner, Terry Thompson, dead and all the animal cage doors open. He wouldn't say how Thompson died but said several aggressive animals were near his body when deputies arrived and had to be shot.

Yeah, I drove through SE Ohio a few weeks ago.

I've met a guy in mid/Northern Michigan who kept alligators and other exotic reptiles, I've met friends-of-friends with even more exotic things. The alligator guy loved them, and actually kinda pissed because he had just gotten another call about someone with a crazy exotic lizard who wanted him to take it off their hands. If you can care for the animal, fine... but plenty of people can't. And he had no room to humanely house more of 'em, so he had to just call down a list of zoos he was friendly with and beg them to take it in. He got a freakin' Komodo Dragon dropped off once...

That said, the dead guy in question stopped the bear-wrestling because someone noticed. Just saying.
