I earn a fairly decent living. But you know what? I still buy Ramen when I go to the grocery store. Maybe it's some atavistic impulse. All I know is that right now I have about 10 packages in the cupboard, just waiting for a drunken night.

/like most of you, I have about 114,854 doctoring recipes

As long as you have no concerns about your health, there is nothing wrong with Ramen. The storebought crap for 10 packages for $1: It's perfect as it is, in all of its salty, fatty goodness.

Beef-flavored, por favor.

What is it with men and cooking that turns them into despots and deadpans. Dim dictators, that's my experience.

The only pressure I experience due to ramen is an explosive one, in my bowels...

I can't imagine fresh ramen, like what you find in a ramen restaurant like in the article, is just as unhealthy as the preserved store bought stuff we find in the U.S.

It's a one-hour wait to get into Ippudo for a bowl of ramen.

That's why no one goes there any more.

Ramen is so 99%.

Shigemi Kawahara: Always think about ramen. Every waking moment I just contemplate ramen.

That seems a tad excessive.

I really miss finding hole-in-the-wall ramen shops and being amazed by the quality that some of them put out. It's always shocking to see a building that probably doesn't meet health code have a "#3 ramen shop on NHK ramen challenge 2009" sign outside. There are entire books and magazines dedicated to ramen-finding in Japan, and I must admit to getting some tip-offs from Ramen-walker from time to time.

Men-maru tsukemen (cost about $9 as pictured with gyoza):

//but you already knew that, didn't you?

Do none of your towns have real ramen restaurants? I've heard more than a few have popped up in New York. And there's at least three in downtown Vancouver. Try to find one if you've never had the real thing.

/ Asahikawa-style ramen is my current favorite

Yea, I have a feeling that you are not getting Ramen from a plastic package with the little flavor packet.

Wasabi Ramen? Whoof, that will clear your sinus' old man.

Not sure if the Ippudo in NYC is one of his or not (and too lazy to google it), but that's far from the best Ramen in the city, or even in the East Village. Rai Rai Ken is about 3 blocks from Ippudo and is much better, IMHO.

Your assuming its the cheap shiat you buy in stores that has triple your recommended sodium. Some of the best meals I've had have been Ramen dishes made by chefs who really know what they are doing.

Ippudo is one of the best for Tonkotsu in Fukuoka, though if you ever get the chance, I recommend Daruma (new window).
Here in Fukuoka, the tonkotsu ramen is of an awesomely high standard. It's a little difficult finding other styles, however.

What I really respect about the ramen guys is their dedication to their craft. Making the broth takes hours or even days, yet they toil away at it--after first trying hundreds of different combinations to find the best recipe--and still manage to serve up a bowl of noodley greatness for just 500 yen or so. It's great value for money. You can be in the middle of Tokyo, one of the most expensive cities in the world, yet have a meal fit for a champ for less than 10 dollars.

1. Beef
2. Pork
3. Chicken

The rest should be deleted from grocery store shelves.

I wouldn't have to state the obvious if an appalling number of ignorant a-holes knew that non-pre-packaged ramen existed...

I really must seek out the real thing because once in a while, the crap just hits the spot for me and these real deal pictures look fantastic (there was another ramen thread a couple weeks ago - same thing, mouth-watering photos). When I am in home-alone mode (husband is deployed, not really up to cooking real food) I cook the cheap crap with onion, celery, and/or whatever fitting veggies are on hand, drain the liquid and add a generous dose of hot sauce. Not great for me, I'm sure, but surely better than hitting a drive thru every night.

(For the record, I am a damn good cook, but it is hard to cook for one without waste. Plus I don't like leftovers after a day. My dogs get them).

Atlanta farkers, where to find the real deal in Atlanta? When hubby returns, we usually treat ourselves to at least one or two dinners out. Nothing of note in the county I live in, that I am aware of.

/live in the outlying burbs of Atlanta but we'll drive if it's worth it.

Well, consider yourself educated, a-hole. Also, since they're not exactly easy to find outside of Japan, let alone farking Wasilla, it's not *really* your fault.

I'm gonna admit, I had no idea Ramen was anything other than .19 cent salty noodles until I saw a wretched Brittany Murphy movie where she went to Japan and learned how to make it. Hell, we just got a Pho joint here and I live in the second most "cultural" spot on my state.

I've eaten ramen is restaurants in Korea and Japan, but the best I ever had was in a ramen shop in Ulan Batar. Can't remember the name of the restaurant offhand, but it had quite a following. I know I had a business card somewhere. Across the street from the sports center....

Oh. Chiyoda. That was it.

I'm amost envious of you. I just had my first real bowl of the stuff within the past year and it's truly incredible. I grew up eating the prepackaged stuff and still like it (just like I love me some Spaghetti-Os), but you're in for a treat. No idea about ATL though, so good luck.

Ramen is basically stone soup. It's only as good as the extra bits of meat and vegetables you add.

That reminds me. I gotta go get some duck and bean sprouts later this week.
