Okay, guys, we have a thousand post debate of recycling talking points going on a news article about OWS for this very day. Let's make fun of the app or post pictures of hot chicks or something here rather than bickering.

Don't make me bust out the bingo board again.

Letting people know you're being oppressed expressing your first amendment right? There's an app for that...

2011-10-18 03:43:31 PM
Yeah, no way a one-press thing like that won't get butt-dialed..

2011-10-18 03:45:19 PM
Not a bad idea. Send the date and time of the arrest and a short blurb about the particulars to your folks, friends, and your lawyer about what happened.

To any lawyer Farkers or the GED law-types, what should you do if you get arrested at one of the rallies? I was at the Denver one on Saturday and they were passing out a number to everyone in the crowd in case they got arrested, but no one mentioned what would come next or even what they would charge you with. Is it just a fine and let go or PMITA fun time?

/Got pepper sprayed last Saturday.
//Learned a valuable lesson about standing next to the kitchen tent when the riot cops close in.

...Just initially enter a custom message and some SMS-ready numbers to contact in the event of your arrest. Then, as you're about to be corralled into the back of a squad car, fire the app up and long-press the bull's-eye for 2 seconds. From there, you can rest assured that your message will be sent to the appropriate contacts...

Not sure how well this would work in reality. If you are being stuffed into the back of a car or wagon, you are going to be handcuffed and probably have your hands behind your back. How are you going to reach your phone assuming the cops haven't taken it?

There might be time before the cops start cracking heads, but then you might be premature pushing the button...

It stuns me how corporate this protest of corporations is and the overall disconnect that's involved. That's a great app for your Galaxy, powered by Android from Google. Do you think they have it for my iPhone? That was awesome when you Tweeted that picture of that cop knocking your latte from your hands outside of Starbucks. I put it up on Facebook. Let's grab some McDonald's and play some Xbox tonight. Et cetera.

Now if the app only played the song in Mario Brothers when your character dies...

Oh, man, those OWS girls are so adorable. Completely wrong about where the movement is going, but cute as a button. Here's a tip, kids. If your protest march/sit-in is MUCH smaller than a high school sporting event, you're not really lighting much of a fire under the populace. Also, astrology is not a good predictor of social movements.

Two things will happen. Most OWS participants will get tired and move on when it gets cold, just as the teabaggers have. Possibly an overemotional member or two who aren't wrapped that tight will start looking at violent alternatives, and either blow up a ROTC building or get entrapped by the FBI.

This is just like the student left anti-war movement of the late '60s, with 1/1,000th of the numbers. The most that movement did was run Johnson out of office (way to go, guys; you extended the war for another five years and killed the Great Society). OWS might manage to turn off enough Obama voters to put President Romney in office, which would REALLY help their cause along.

/Doomed to repeat it.

This app would be even more useful if it turned on the camera and recorded audio until the memory ran out or was stopped by the user - getting the police brutality on tape could be useful.

This is just the dumbest criticism. I don't think the OWS people want to eliminate corporations from the BUSINESS sphere; they just want them to stop buying elections, paying their CEOs 400 times the average wage of their workers, privatizing gains while socializing risk, etc. You don't have to hate capitalism to hate the way American companies (abetted by a lot of politicians but whole-heartedly by Republicans) have used political influence to rig the "free market" in favor of the haves against not only the have-nots, but the have-lesses.

I mean, hell, the deliberate choice to cut taxes and run huge deficits under Reagan and W resulted in a massive transfer of wealth from taxpayers to those rich enough to lend the government money. The Republican Party KNEW that was going to happen. They WANT wealthy people and corporations to have more political power than the elected government.

The picture only says something to idiots who completely missed the point of the movement. They don't think corporations are inherently bad, just that the level of influence that they have in American politics is wrong and that the corporations are inappropriately disparaging workers.

This is an obvious troll to anyone who's followed this movement at ALL, but for for those who buy this BS logic:
It's not a protest against capitalism or against the existence of corporations, it's a protest against corporate control of government.

Pointing out that it's practically impossible to be anything but a luddite clad in homespun without being drenched in corp-jizz even while protesting against them isn't much of an argument against the people who are trying to bring attention to the fact that corporations are taking over every aspect of our lives.

Let's be fair here, they're taking orders from a president that's the most ineffective socialist muslim Nazi liberal to ever take all your guns and rights with an empty suit. They can be a lot of things at once.
