2011-10-18 02:33:31 PM
Just going by the source of the "research" I'm going to go ahead and call bullshiat on these findings. It seems more likely that they had a conclusion in mind already and worked backward from there.

Fark Brigham Young and all who continue to sail under his banner.

Stop considering words to be profane, then, Mormons. That will destroy their "edge" and remove the associated agitation, right?

AM I RIGHT?

Goddammit ta hell

It even looks like they tested the direction of the path and got better model fit the way they reported it - it isn't proof, nothing ever is, but the evidence supports their claims.

Anyone else suddenly want to go to Utah and play a Dungeons & Dragons campaign where all of the character & NPC names contain profanities? I figure that if they're still blaming "culture" rather than a valid agent (the individual mind) for life's problems, then I'm sure D&D is still "that Satanic game of demon worship and violence."

"shiathead the barbarian advances up to farkwad, the leader of the Brokendick orc tribe and attempts to slash him with his greataxe."

God I hate living in this state sometimes.... I like Mormons as neighbors, they're nice people, they actually bother to get to know their neighbors, and my kids are safer in my front yard than they ever were in Phoenix.

That said, I'm sick of all this "morality" bullshiat, and they just keep piling it on around here. 'Profanity causes aggression"? Bullshiat, aggression causes aggression, but you can't point out something like that in the great State of Deseret, because we like our guns here... Worst part is that the Mormon church CONTINUALLY shoots itself in the foot, if they would just back off and stop trying to be control freak douchebags in Utah, then people wouldn't have that trickle down 'bad; image of Mormons. People can't identify 90% of the Mormons they work with every day, unless the topic comes up, they aren't sacrificing animals in their cubicle or anything, their entire bad reputation stems from how people perceive Utah, and while much of that is flawed perspective, unfortunately there is some very true stuff in there, too.

I'm still not going back to farking Arizona, I've had enough of THAT shiathole...

Seriously Mike? I'm from Cancun and I wouldn't leave. Thanks to all that "control freak douchebaggery" you speak of, douchebags from outta the State stay outta the State and off my mountains. I'm all for everyone continuing their anti-mormon bashing so long as it keeps them out. Fark you all, stay away!

ph0rk: It even looks like they tested the direction of the path and got better model fit the way they reported it - it isn't proof, nothing ever is, but the evidence supports their claims.

So you don't accept "correlation != causation."

Here's another logical fallacy for you then: Post hoc ergo proctor hoc.

"Profanity is kind of like a stepping stone," Coyne said. "You don't go to a movie, hear a bad word, and then go shoot somebody. But when youth both hear and then try profanity out for themselves it can start a downward slide toward more aggressive behavior."

So it's like a slippery slope?

Man, I love how a research report demands attacking the researcher's religion.

Maybe Drew should take off the Filter and see how much more violent we get.

The solution is simple. Stop treating certain words like they have magic powers. Don't call them 'dirty' or 'profane' and they no longer will be.

Look who didn't read the article. Or who read it and isn't well-versed enough in statistics to understand the nuance.

/If you're looking for proof of causation in social science, you'll be looking for awhile.

Note: experimental methods don't "prove" causation, either.

Hey hey... ssshhhh.... Calm down. You may not have been here long enough to get over it. I stopped my rants after a while. Realized it's not worth it when I looked around and saw that all of my friends I've made here are NOT mormon.
Let the mos do their thing. Remember, They're like vanilla on a plain cone... predictable, nothing out of the ordinary. They're safe, you know where they will all be on Sunday (best ski days for us!), how they will vote...lives cut from a simplicity pattern. Generally a non threat.

Yet I'm the one that understood it is still about correlation, no matter the chronological order of cursing/violence. The fact there's another named logical fallacy I can point to is merely icing on the cake. Should we discuss the ridiculous sample size too professor?

I'd be satisfied with all the other studies out there that have proven causation. Any field, really.

People still move here, and in growing numbers, the Church is constantly losing its percentage share of the total population(Down to about 60% statewide now), although it still has an 80% stranglehold on the legislature.

As for 'staying off of your mountains', obviously you haven't noticed that the state bends over backwards specifically to get people ON to "your mountains"?

Pinner: Generally a non threat.

Until you want to be treated like an adult and able to make your own decisions. Otherwise, yes.

Remember, this is the state where it is a BIGGER fine to show a movie with nudity when alcohol is served, than it is to serve to a minor. $1,600 fine to Brewvies for showing Hangover 2, since they serve alcohol, vs. $1,200 if they had served to a minor. THAT'S the kind of stuff that pisses me off.

Right. Go into a Utah bar and order a pitcher of beer for yourself, or a double rye neat. See how far you get.

What did I say that makes it "obvious" that I don't know, exactly? I didn't say anything about people NOT coming here, just that I don't want DOUCHE BAGS coming here. Furthermore, how are they bending over backwards to get people here? Lastly, why are you quoting "your mountains"? They ARE mine! Every farking one of 'em!
