Poof, you're employed.

Military service is obligatory in Chile, but there are usually enough volunteers to fill the ranks so that no one has to serve against their will.

Si it's obligatory, but it's not obligatory?

/confused.

How large is their military that they only need to fill 11,000 spots?

In other words: Somebody has to serve, but not everybody.

That really wasn't too much of a stretch now, was it?

They have a quota to fill each year. Legally the government is empowered to draft 18 year olds to fill the quota if they fall short, but until now they haven't needed to do so as there were enough volunteers to reach the minimum.

Or you could declare a war on drugs and arrest them for being hippies. That way you don't have to arm them, right Nixon?

Meh, live in the field and get paid, or live in the field until the media is tired of dealing with you. Either way you are probably going to end up occupying someplace.

/Veteran, has been dirty, but not a hygiene casualty like some of these folks down there

Historically anti-war types have made horrible soldiers.

That's why even in the middle of WWII during the largest draft in our history the generals still pushed for alternative solutions (like work camps) for objectors.

They didn't want to be in the army and the army didn't want them.

And who is Chile' at odds with? Snugge'?

People can chuckle about putting these students into the military. But the truth is that all branches have tightened their entry criteria again because of the shiatty economy. As I understand it, it's pretty much the opposite of what we saw almost a decade when they would take just about anyone willing to do it.

It's obligatory of you disagree, otherwise you're fine. This is the type of ObamaSpeak we can look forward to with four more years of him. "We have to pass it to see what's in it." To be fair, BushSpeak: "If you didn't do anything wrong, what are you afraid of with the government tapping you?"

The Draft cures unemployment, undereducation and behavioral issues all in one stroke.

This is a good thing for every 18yo on the continent, especially the "privileged" pukes.

It should be the mission of the government to insure that does not happen. Good Luck.

The only exceptions are physical limitations, providing the primary income for a family, being married or expecting a child, being convicted of an "immoral" crime, or being the child of someone imprisoned or tortured by Chile's 1973-1990 dictatorship.

Why do married people get out of it?

Hell no I'm not against violence. Violence is the only thing that is going to change this farce we call a global economy... either at the hands of rioters or in a full on World War.

I have respect for people going to a great deal of trouble to change things non-violently. I just don't think they have any chance at all of succeeding. Throughout history it always works out that people have to die to get the big stuff changed.

I'd like it to be otherwise, but it isn't.

They don't want to have to provide family housing or benefits. Same reason as 'supporting a household' is an exemption - they must pay really bad.

Too bad it would fark up the armed services at every level from basic training to frontline wombat combat.

The Dims have gone to great lengths to cull all the actual war fighters out of the Military. The ones who actually MEAN and BELIEVE the words of the oath that they took on enlistment. You know, the "to preserve, protect and Defend the CONSTITUTION of the United States, from all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC." Let's make sure that ALL the troops diagnosed with PTSD be disarmed, Obviously anyone who disagrees with Dear Leader is mentally ill. (It was a standard procedure in the USSR, and is still a core belief with current Leftists. "How can they vote against their own (Our) interests? They must be crazy!")

Dear Leader has just come out of the closet, and stopped denying that he is a Communist. (He said today that he supports OWS.) I'm waiting to see when he has the oath changed to include total obedience to the Great Leader, Barak Obama. That only the ones protected by the elimination of DADT will take the new, improved oath is a given. While I rather doubt that ACORN, the SEIU and his other union brown shirts will actually enlist, they can still be issued weapons and serve. (With a select few as political officers, confirming political purity.) By using the local police departments as the core of his new People's Militia, martial law should be a snap.(The Thugs in Blue HAVE to support Dear Leader. They've spent thirty years farking the Constitution in their War on Drugs. It's not like civilians like or trust them.)

It means a lot of killing

At least the overpopulation will go away, suddenly...

I'm more interested in the logic of "being the child of someone imprisoned or tortured by Chile's 1973-1990 dictatorship". Being the victim, I get. Being the victim's kid, I don't get. Unless the victims are in such bad shape that they needed taking care of, but that would be covered be #2 on that list.

I imagine it's similar to the scholarships given out to those who are part native american and other affirmative action programs.

FTFA: But Chile's military also had a shortage last year, before the movement began, and at that time they called up fewer than 39,000 for the draft.
