Couple of newspapers here really ran with this story with the whole "shock, horror, cannibals exists! zomg hide yo wife".

The guy sails to an island known for cannibalism, and then takes up an offer by a local to go on a "hunting trip". I mean....really? That sounds like a good idea?

Good headline. We would also have accepted:

Cannibals eat rawmen.

And of course, it can't just be a straightforward murder...and 'known for cannibalism'? Only in hyperbolic news stories.

Gee, I wonder how that convo went:

Ramin: "Sure, I'd love to go on a hunting tip"
Cannibal: "Ok, we'll give you a 20 minute head start"

Ah yes, the poor college students of Nuku Hiva. I hear at some stores they can get 5 Germans for a dollar.

And if we throw a little twist on the dialect, it's more proof that everyone still loves Ramin. Well, loved.

If "Surviving the Game" taught me anything, it's that you should never accept an invitation for a hunting trip.

I guess this is where you and I differ, because I must some type of crazy person for thinking I should be able to go anywhere on Earth and NOT BE EATEN BY ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.

The girlfriend looks pretty tasty.

Honestly, this case seems less about actual cannibalism than about a sketchy guide that murdered his client with plans to rape his girl.

Women should be able to get in the car with strange men without having to worry about being raped, too.

The emphasis is on should. You can't exactly count on everyone to do what they should do.

You sound white. Thinking you can go anywhere on the planet and expect the same sort of cultural norms is, indeed, crazy. We've homogenized the planent pretty extensively already, yes, but we're not done - there are still places with their own culture and ideas, some of which are very very far from western culture. Me, I'd kindof like to find that place where no sentient creature is abused its entire life, skinned alived, then cut up and eaten - but I don't limit such to just humans. At least I know I'm crazy, though.

Interestingly, he tied her to a tree. It may be irrelevant, but according to the Wikipedia article, that's how the natives used to 'store' their vicitms: hanging from trees until dinnertime, when their heads were bashed in with rocks.

Either way, I'm guessing he ate him, was going to rape her, then was going to eat her, too.

I'm sorry but while rape is obviously horrible and what not, I don't think it holds a candle in terms of things that are a "completely lack of humanity beyond description" to cooking and eating someone. They aren't even remotely similar in terms of severity.

No, you're confused on the principles of self defense. No one should murder, neglect, abuse, rape, rob, or cheat someone. But it is well known that they do.

Idealism is deadly in many ways. It tries to package up the vast variety and imperfections of life into neat little mental frames and then leaves you entirely unprepared for life.

It is good to strive for idealism, but confusing the goal with the current reality is always a mistake. Basically the better way is to assume that human imperfection is like a force of nature -- it is just as stupid to expose yourself to human "evil" as it is to take any other physical risk.

That's not very bootstrappy of you and actually seems to be that you feel ENTITLED to not be eaten. What are you, some sort of commie or something?

Yes, it's one of the most horrible crimes our civilization has constructed, but that is not our civilization and even within our civilization, not everyone cares what we decide is right or wrong. There is no universal consensus on the value of human life.

I'm not saying that we need to be tolerant of this horrifying, barbaric practice. However, it simply does happen.

The severity may differ but in terms of "completely lack humanity beyond description" all sociopathic activity is equivalent. Once someone doesn't care about inflicting pain on another it is all the same type of evil. Doesn't matter if you scam their life savings, rape them, torture them, abuse them, it is all the same lack of humanity -- if you lack empathy then you lack it. There are not really degrees of lacking empathy. The only difference at that point is whatever mode your selfishness takes -- money, power, sex ...

Cannibalism is almost universally regarded as abhorrent, whereas the only reason why rape isn't a daily happening is that it's illegal, the two aren't really comparable.

I'm going with the popular culture of the moment. The story will be epic in scope, have great cinematography, provide amazing terror filled moments, but the entire cast of characters will be one dimensional and every Sunday night we'll have a smaller story that will run too long, contain WAY too many commercials, and focus on the rescuing of idiotic and sucidal children.

Then you're just a stupid person.

You really do seem like the type of person who, when offered to join a hunting trip with known cannibals, would act indignant and surprised when the cannibals then said "ok lunch time, 20 minute headstart".

Harry Truman Jr., is that you? (new window)

People who eat people,

Sensitiveborderarea: These practices may seem a bit different than our own, but it is important not to judge other cultures as "distasteful" or less acceptable than our own. Instead we must invite unlimited 3rd world immigration into our own borders so that we can become more like them and experience for ourselves the exciting diversity of these amazing peoples and cultures. That's what our political leaders believe is best for us so it must be true.

TravisBickle62: Cannibalism is almost universally regarded as abhorrent, whereas the only reason why rape isn't a daily happening is that it's illegal, the two aren't really comparable.

I'm not buying that. Rape, like cannibalism, is unacceptable because the moral underpinnings of our society lead to few other possible conclusions. Most of your neighbors would still be horrified and shun you if you were known as a rapist, even if it was legal and you promised not to rape your neighbors or their loved ones.

Different societies believe different things. There is no fundamental consensus about the nature of right and wrong or mankind's role in the order of things, although some principles, like the idea that it's wrong to eat people even when they have no economic or social value to you, have become nearly universal, but that doesn't mean that those who hold to different conclusions can just be dismissed as monsters.

People can feel perfectly normal levels of empathy for other human beings, understand that those people are suffering, and, in various situations, just not care because their society has taught them that making that person suffer is OK and even desirable. Supposing you don't share our notion that human beings are inherently sacred and elevated above the animals, it may be a hard sell to convince you that people who hold no economic or social value to your community are not just as legitimate of a source of food as anything else moving around in the wilderness.

It may very well be the case that we share some unbreakable moral bond as human beings that, on some level, makes us all the same and obligates us all to care for one another, but not everybody is aware of that, and assuming they are is dangerous.
