2013?. I wasn't expecting the DeLorean to reappear until October 21, 2015.

Can't you just run down to the corner store and get that? It's 1984, man. Fark the Libyans.

Or 1985, man I suck at this

2011-10-18 07:34:00 AM
Maybe it was 1.1 Gigawatts* in 1984. But by 1985 it rose to 1.21 due to inflation.

*Not Jiggawatts. Doc Brown is one of the few people to actually pronounce the prefix correctly

Well, you know, car's are always trying to improve mileage and efficiency. Maybe they shaved off .11 GIGAWATTS (The only way I write the word.) making time travel that much easier!

Great SCOTT!

/the original was underpowered and too heavy. Looked cool though.

The good news is that it will well surpass the 88mph needed.

You'd figure that's one of the first upgrades that the Doc would've done to the car when he went to the future with it. But no, he slaps a Mr. Fusion on it and yet keeps the fossil fuel engine. WTF.

2011-10-18 08:37:16 AM
I sure hope they're getting rid of the stainless steel body. Especially with electric, the weight penalty would be immense. The car might not rot, but it sure as hell won't be going too far.

Deloreans would be forgotten pieces of crap were it not for the "Back to the future" movies.

padraig: Deloreans would be forgotten pieces of crap were it not for the "Back to the future" movies.

Definitely not. The body style was the one used in many video games, calendars and posters at the time for what a fast car should look like. Of course it wasn't, but it still looked speedy.

I believe so - I had one parked outside an apartment I lived in for a while. (it was a neighbor's, not mine. His other car was an Aztek which calls into question the taste of DeLorean fans.)

$90-$100k sounds steep. I really want one, but still... too steep.

2011-10-18 09:19:24 AM
The car is heavy, but it's not that enormously heavy. For it to take 260hp to reach 125 mph that body has to produce some massive drag.

One day, I read an article about a car designed solely by women professionnal designers. They put gullwing doors because they deemed them more pratical, especially, for instance, to put a child in a safety seat without having to contortion yourself beneath the roof.

When you think about it, if you had a time machine, you'd want to diversify the energy source so that you could fuel up on as many different things as possible depending on what's available.

The problem with that was seen in Back to the Future 3. No gasoline at all way back then. But you can throw anything into Mr. Fusion to generate energy.

But the Mr. Fusion only powered the time circuits, which is way they needed the train to push them so they would reach 88 mph.

Came here to post what you starred.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giga-#Pronunciation
{
In English, the initial g of giga can be pronounced /ɡ/ (a hard g as in giggle), or /dʒ/ (a soft g as in giant, which shares its Greek root).
This latter pronunciation was formalized within the United States in the 1960s and 1980s with the issue by the US National Bureau of Standards of pronunciation guides for the metric prefixes.[4] A prominent example is found in the pronunciation of gigawatts in the 1985 movie Back to the Future.
}

According to the US National Bureau of Standards, it is correctly said "jiggawatt." Also, it's really supposed to be a "jiggabyte."

Even the Brits agree with us that "gig" sounds better though (according to the wiki). I dare you to go around to your friends and talk about how many jiggabytes your phone has. They will look at you like you have 3 heads.

/jigga please

47 is the new 42: But the Mr. Fusion only powered the time circuits, which is way they needed the train to push them so they would reach 88 mph.

It would seem Doc Brown should have had his Delorean converted to be completely electric, then that wouldn't have been an issue. (in retrospect, why did they have flying vehicles still powered by liquid fuel in their future?)

More than one pronunciation

In English, the initial g of giga can be pronounced /ɡ/ (a hard g as in giggle), or /dʒ/ (a soft g as in giant, which shares its Greek root).[3]
This latter pronunciation was formalized within the United States in the 1960s and 1980s with the issue by the US National Bureau of Standards of pronunciation guides for the metric prefixes.[4] A prominent example is found in the pronunciation of gigawatts in the 1985 movie Back to the Future.
According to the American writer Kevin Self, a German committee member of the International Electrotechnical Commission proposed giga as a prefix for 109 in the 1920s, drawing on a verse by the humorous poet Christian Morgenstern that appeared in the third (1908) edition of Galgenlieder (Gallows Songs). This suggests that a hard German [ɡ] was originally intended as the pronunciation. Self was unable to ascertain at what point the alternative pronunciation came into occasional use, but claimed that as of 1995 it had died out.[5]
In 1998, a poll by the phonetician John C. Wells found that 84% of Britons preferred the pronunciation of gigabyte starting with /ɡɪ/ (as in gig), 9% with /dʒɪ/ (as in jig), 6% with /ɡaɪ/ (guy), and 1% with /dʒaɪ/ (as in giant).[6]

Jigga-byte sounds too much like jigger-byte.

When they went to the future there were still Texaco stations, so one would assume Flying cars were some kind of Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Also it is possible that Mr Fusion could not run the car and the Flux Capacitor at the same time.

I'd want one if the fit and finish was better-- the body lines on that prototype are going in every direction imaginable, the plastic/rubber trim pieces are warped and wonky.

If the production models are ~70k and don't look like something the hippie down the street bolted together, I'll seriously consider it.

/I'd much rather see EV conversion kits for normal vehicles. 1992-2010 Police Cruiser/Crown Vic/Grand Marquis kits, anyone? Huge trunks, relatively light for their size. Tons of them on the road and in used car lots.

2011-10-18 12:50:12 PM
If you buy the $100,000 model do you get a few kilos for free? That's.. That's kind of a dealbreaker for me.

Good grief. Are we really getting this involved about pronounciation?

I propose a compromise: Gijawatt.

Then again, that sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy word.

"I'm off to the store! I'm supposed to gijawatt?"

How about Gojirawatt, the amount of energy in 1 second of Godzilla's fiery breath.
