Interesting idea but why not go one better. Instead of dive bombing the target and destroying itself why not fire miniaturized missiles instead? Firing something a little bigger than a 12 gauge shotgun shell with a solid rocket motor and a plastic explosive payload in the 2-3 ounce range would be quite fatal. They could probably pack over half a dozen on to something that size.

From the article it looks like something small they want troops to carry around so adding ammo and a setup to fire the things is going to add bulk and make it less retractable.

I agree there should be a better alternative than wasting the whole device but there seems to be a trade off of firepower vs bulk that they just can't meet the median on.

Maybe the US should develop something that makes people not hate them so much instead of new shiny ways to kill people.

not only that, but the thing destroys itself, so as to prevent other countries from reverse-engineering it.

It's funny. I used to be a pretty open minded American. I mean, thanks to the internet, I had *some* idea of what other people/countries felt about Americans and when I left the United States, I did my best to not be a typical American. Sadly, all the people I've met in Europe haven't bothered to try their best to not be a typical European.

Instead of learning, first hand, about our our differences were superficial and everyone is great. I've mostly learned I hate Europeans. And that America really and truly is better....in so many more ways that I could have imagined.

If I had a quarter and could either buy a gum-ball or spend that quarter to erase generations of ill-will towards the United States and make all of the world respect us once again; I'd probably buy a Cherry or perhaps, Lime, if they have it gum-ball. Or, maybe one of those super-bouncy balls, I always liked those.

Doesnt seem like that much of a leap forward from a guided missile, you still have a person guiding a bomb to a target, just replace a laser sight or some other means with a first person camera

It's especially funny when you realize that Europeans were responsible for more death and destruction in the last 100 years than any other people. I mean, we had to invent whole new words just to describe it. It's only relatively recently that they've become "peaceful". What is that phrase? The whore in church prays the loudest?

So....from TFA, it sounds like it's basically a slow-moving, guided hand grenade. A little scary, but not exactly revolutionary.

At the very least, dropping explosive munitions before returning (less weight for that part, too!) has got to be cheaper in the long run.

Though maybe they only have the power for a single flight altogether?

It's a miniature cruise missile. Hienlien predicted the evolution of weaponry in this direction. Spending 250,000 rounds to achieve one kill isn't particularly efficient when you consider the manufacturing and transportation costs of that volume of ammunition.

This little device is an interesting step in asymmetric warfare. Maybe eventually instead of calling in artillery or airstrikes, each soldier has 3 or 4 of these that they can use from cover. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper and a lot less likely to blow up wedding parties.

So did H G Wells, among other people. This particular system is new, but the idea predates practical military rockets.

Anyway, this system lost all credibility when they decided to call it Switchblade instead of Jart.

No no! Jarts are dangerous which is why the things they make today have big round ends that you just want to have land/lay within the circle - won't someone think of the children? If they called this thing a Jart my daughters would want one and then we'd have targeted killings of their little brother.... my God man!!! It's much better if we call it switchblade.... or maybe deathdaggerthingy..... yeah....
