At least they didn't know what they were stealing (it was in her purse). I was thinking of something more along the lines of "Give me the Gospel, and nobody gets hurt!"

/Oh, and they got a white shawl, too. Bet they will be bragging and showing off to their gangbanger friends!

2011-10-17 10:58:04 PM
I'm sure the thief will repent once he rifles through a few epistols

2011-10-17 11:28:46 PM
I hope they're religious thugs. Hopefully this scares the crap out of them.

/Don't know about the shawl though, that probably ended up on the side of the road about 50 yards from the mugging.

I admit to my own fair share of irony abuse, but what pray tell is supposed to be ironic about that headline? I'm serious, I have no idea.

2011-10-18 01:28:27 AM
Headline confused me. I was imagining a bible being taken hostage for some reason.

"No one moves or Deuteronomy gets it!"

2011-10-18 01:29:25 AM
Well, religion is absolutely required to be a good and moral person, so the thieves need that bible more than she does. What's the problem here?

Let he who is without sin, cast the first rock, and I shalt smoketh it.

Religion = War..... War = Killing those that pray to the wrong god. Stealing bible at gun point = divine salvation.

Was the Bible a first edition signed by the authors? Could have been worth something.

Sorry, not ironic.

My guess would be that Subby's referencing the 8th Commandment...

But yeah, not ironic...

It would only be ironic if he thieves were saved.

2011-10-18 01:48:51 AM
This reminds me of the episode of The First 48 where this old bum took a Bible out of a stolen car that the thieves had stolen after they murdered the owner. The bum felt "It wasn't right, burning a Bible like that..." because the guys who stole the car said they were burning everything in it. The bum snatched it up. The family positively ID'ed the Bible and the bum knew who the dudes were that murdered were. The Bible itself ended up being the only evidence that proved who committed the crme. One of those stories that make you go: "huh".

Subby is referring to fark's definition of irony, the "fark ironic tag", not actual irony.

Are you all new here?

What is Ironic: subby writing headline dedicated to Ironic tag and the headline is not Ironic

Definition 2a from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/irony (new window):

Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs

How about that, smarties? It is indeed ironic.

But yes, everybody likes to sound smart in here particularly on the "Ironic" tag. Welcome to Fark!

I suspect the thieves will get a death row pardon two minutes too late. Heck, they might end up stealing ten thousand spoons when all they need is a knife. I won't even mention what might happen to their chardonnay.

/Ironic

I think it would be ironic if they had their hands cut off for stealing the book.

But I don't think that stealing the book is ironic.

I'm sure they wouldn't have taken the bible if they'd known it was in the purse. They'd just have taken the shawl.

"Situational irony is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect." (new window)

Example: Someone steals a purse from an old lady at gunpoint but instead of money, all they find is a book that says "you shouldn't steal".

Also, you have the Islamic culture and Christian cultures confused.

CSB time....

I do computer work for several small businesses, one of which is a local bar in an Atlanta suburb. Last week, the owner handed me a Kindle, and asked what I could do with it. He goes to one of those "progressive" churches, where the preacher preaches with an iPad that he also uses to control the slideshow on the main screen, and roughly half the congregation brings their iPads/tablets/laptops to church. He explained that he had bought the Kindle from one of his customers for $20, and asked if I could put a "Bible app" on it. I had read somewhere about some church offering a free bible for the Kindle, so I said I'd take a look.

Well, I created an Amazon account for him, but I couldn't register the Kindle. I called Amazon support, and, I think you know where this is going, it came up Lost or Stolen. I explained this to the owner, and he said, "well, can you still load the bible?"

I'm always up for a challenge, so, after having the bartender download the same bible through her Kindle app on her Android tablet, I sideloaded it to the Kindle, and was informed that the Kindle did not have the rights to view this book. Seriously? DRM on the freakin' bible?

So, a little while later, after fooling with some questionably legal software dealing with DRM, I presented him with the Kindle with bible loaded and ready to go.

I had to do it for the sheer irony factor. I loaded up a stolen Kindle with a pirated version of the farking bible.

That, subby, is irony.

/I wish I was making this up
//FWIW, he is returning the Kindle to Amazon to go back to the rightful owner, but only because he doesn't like the interface

Still not as good as the strong-arm robber who broke an old lady's arm stealing her clean-up bag of doggie-poops.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when those guys opened the purse though: "WTF?!??! A freaking Bible and a shawl?!? Dude, you said those old ladies carried a shiatload of cash!!"

they didn't steal the book at gunpoint. That was a bonus when they later look inside the purse. Likely, they were after cash or credit cards and not the bible, so this would be mere coincidence. And, that is what every subtard on fark will mistake for irony, every time.

Perhaps the fact that they stole a book that several organisations will happily give away free to anyone who asks (new window)?

Sorry, not ironic.

I would only be ironic if the purse contained some type of financial instrument that created an obligation of the bearer to pay money upon the sole condition that it had been acquired through the act of theft at gunpoint.

No, it would be ironic if they stole a book which was written explicitly for advanced readers and they couldn't read. Also, we should laugh at people who can't read. That doesn't have anything to do with irony, it should just be a rule of life.

Well, I have my interpretation as the author, but I also find validity in the interpretations of others. You are wise indeed.

IMO it's about time we changed the definition of 'Irony' to match what it really is today - a word that you use when you can't remember the real name of the grammar phenomenon you're dealing with.

Like you know those words where each letter that spells it out stand for a different word...like 'FBI'. I constantly forget what that is called, and get it confused with anagrams.

So from now on, I'm just going to call it irony.
