FTFA: Some parents and teachers say the garments defy not only dress codes - and a new state law banning saggy pants in schools - but common decency. At a public forum this month, several Broward parents said the dress code - and lack of enforcement - was one of their biggest concerns.

Hmm... If only these kids had some adults in their lives who were responsible for raising them and teaching them the difference between right and wrong and about common decency...

The only teen fashion that offends me is the baggy pants falling down thing. Not because it's particularly offensive but because douchebags were doing that when I was a teenager like 15 years ago. Get your own stupid fashion statement. I suppose they did add to it with the holding their pants up with one hand, their baby in the other and their phone with their shoulder.

Oh man, remember when Bart Simpson t-shirts were considered subversive? I got sent home once for wearing the "...who the hell are you?" one. Lol.

Holy shiat, so did I. Well not sent home but I had to put tape over "hell" or they would have sent me home.

Solution: Ban all clothing for teenagers on school grounds. This goes for the staff from the principal on down. Except for the janitors or cafeteria workers since they have to handle things like toxic cleaning agents, hot ovens & student vomit.

Well, at least we don't have to wear robes like those freaks in British public schools.

The three B's are cyclical. This seems to be a bad year (or good if you are into that kind of thing). Lots of cleavage compared to the last couple of years.

On a similar note, lots of inappropriate but funny t-shirts this year.

I think some public schools have done tan kakis and logo-free solid colored sport shirt thing for all of the students.

/Probably 'urban' environments where every gang has a color and the whole situation was unnecessarily stupid anyway.

Sooo.. this is south Florida, where it's hot. And they're complaining about the kids not wearing enough clothes... Move to Canada you damn prudes.

If boys are wearing their trousers actually below the buttocks then, well, they only have themselves to blame for looking retarded.

FTFAAppropriate length is nothing above "mid-thigh."

Mid-thigh? Mid-thigh? 12 years ago it was no more than 2 inches above the knee.

Didn't stop girls from wearing jeans tight enough to give you an anatomy lesson.

Make the little bastards wear uniforms. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to wear khakis and polo/dress shirts. If they want to be treated like grownups, they can start by dressing like grownups.

"In the early 70s when I went to high school, there were no dress codes.''

That's because in the early 70's parents still had the ability, and inclination, to restrict what their kids wore.

2011-10-17 10:44:38 PM
Losing proposition to attempt to control clothing choice. Dress codes change school to school, enforcement fluctuates, enforcement causes disruption rather than preventing or halting, definitions lag, and students are out of school more than in. Either employ uniforms or ignore this.

My decision has been to not concern myself with student dress unless something is actually a disruption, which is rare. Telling them not to wear something as the school says the clothing is inappropriate and adult, further encouraging wear. Parents have controls on this by buying clothing and approving what a child wears.

Som of these kids really are dressing pretty bad nowadays. I know its an every generation thing, but much longer and nipple pads and and a loin cloth will be the only thing considered edgy. If dancing gets any edgier for the youngsters it will involve penetration and an STD check.

Which is cool, I didn't mind watching girls demean themselves with this freak dancing stuff, it just can't progress much without laws being broken.

I was hoping to get a link to my Elephant Flare Brittanica jeans circa 1979 (tight enough that you could tell that the doctor who performed my circumcision was right handed) but all I can find is this for Angel Fight (new window). I still own them but the waist size is 32". Sigh...

Anyway, the kids are alright, the kids are alright.

i had a student over the summer -- she was 15 or 16 -- who wore basically the same thing every day. short shorts and a t-shirt with the neck cut out and sleeves cut off, so that she was basically wearing a bra with some rags over it. you know what i said about it? NOTHING. Not a thing. What did I say about her attire? Nothing! Why? Because saying something about it means that you're paying attention to what they're wearing and what they look like below the neck. Acknowledging that is like saying you want to diddle them, as far as parents, lawyers, and administrators are concerned. So you say nothing and let the kids wear what they want. If it's a distraction, you send the distracted parties to the school administrators. Even if their boobs are hanging out or you can see their minges, you don't say ANYTHING about it. You look at their faces, you look at the work, you look at the damn ceiling if you have to, but you don't acknowledge it. It's above your pay grade, it's not your problem, and it's only going to cause you trouble.

Any young teachers out there, that's advice from a guy who has taught in some of the most politically-correct atmospheres that education has to offer.

And for God's sake don't let them hug you, no matter how they beg. Insist on a bubble surrounding you by three feet in all directions.

I honestly feel sorry for straight male teachers at high schools - it must take steely determination to not stare at some of what is on display.

The goods news is I was just in the college part of town today, and quite a few of the college ladies seem to be wearing very short skirts and shorts. I was actually working in a sorority house today. It was both wonderful, and deeply depressing. Akin to giving chewing gum to a starving man.

It's not difficult. You see them as children, and then (because you're not a pederast) you don't view them as sexual beings. It's about boundaries and morals. You're in a position of authority, a professional who is in charge of their welfare -- in loco parentis and all that. So unless straight male fathers have difficulty not getting boners when they look at their daughters, it really shouldn't be a challenge for straight male teachers to control themselves. Again, they are children, and when you keep that in mind, you aren't in the least bit tempted.

reference to the big lebowski. And I didn't teach about sex crime, so I'm pretty sure I was okay. Sometimes, being a teacher isn't about knowing everything. Sometimes, in fact, it's about being able to communicate the curriculum and encourage critical thinking.

adeist69: After reading your previous post I'm going to guess that was sarcasm, wasn't it?

Nope. There's a difference between noticing a minor's clothing and filing that knowledge away to inform an administrator about and going out of one's way (so far as to schedule coffee breaks strategically) to stare at minors as sex objects.

Well I think it has to do with your ass showing. Though Im more inclined to think a boxer covered ass is less explicit than what a woman is allowed to get away with in the face-fulla-titty departkent.

When I made a mistaken attempt to teach high school, there was a rule that no one could wear anything on their head inside the building. One day one of the football players was walking down the hall between classes with a do-rag. I still laugh about saying "Tyrone - take your mama's pantyhose off your head!".
