What an incredibly informative article. It certainly left no detail to the imagination.

I SCUBA dive in Puget Sound, so I'm getting a... oh wait, I'm wearing a 5mm neoprene drysuit with gloves and hood, so it doesn't really matter.

I was kayaking in Puget Sound in July. There were plenty of jellyfish then, too. And seal that was apparently stalking us.

I've seen the jellyfish so thick in the James River that you could practically walk on top of them from one pier to another. They stunk to high heaven too.

Stupid jellyfish

Someone is going to need to explain why it's a problem to be boring. Better than being all freaked out all the time.

Honest question: Why 5mm?

Seems like a lot of excess buoyancy for nothing in return.

When the water averages about 50° year around, more insulation is good. I'm sure he trades a lighter undergarment for the thicker neoprene. I had an Andy's drysuit, and just wore a heavier undergarment plus a fleece vest for core warmth. After about an hour you were glad you had it, especially at your safety stop when the air is all out of your suit!

Also, around here a lot of divers use steel 119s or 130s so being "too light" isn't often an issue. :P

Yeah but the neoprene is going to crush at depth. That would give you little insulation from the suit and make you wish you had more in the undergarments.

Not to mention how much weight you would have to carry to offset the neoprene at shallow depths.

I just don't know why anyone would go so heavy on rubber when you could make it up in fleece.

The water is 4-7C, which is...about 40-45F. It's cold, and that's in the summer. (The ocean doesn't change much in the winter.)

I wear a custom-fit Seatux made out of crushed neoprene. It doesn't change too much at depth. During the summer I wear spandex pants and a technical shirt. When it's colder out I'll wear a fleece on top of that. When it's a lot colder I'll put a couple of hand warmers in the pockets.

It's a really nice suit -- flexible, warm, and durable -- and custom-fit was $1300.

I wear 30# of lead, that's typical for this area. If I was wearing a laminate suit, I'd wear about the same.
