i·ro·ny
noun, plural -nies.
1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, "How nice!" when I said I had to work all weekend.

/like rain on your wedding day

This. Fark needs a "coincidence" tag.

Portland != Eugene.

For one, apparently Eugene is "too conservative" for some young folks, so they move to Ashland or Portland.

They're also a few hours apart.

Sucks this guy died though.

Milwaukie Oregon was named after Milwaukie Wisconsin BEFORE it changed it's name to Milwaukee. Milwaukie changed it's name because the local newspaper said so.
Milwaukee is the current spelling.

It's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Milwaukie has certainly had its share of visitors. The Russian missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600's to trade with the Native Americans. Actually , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Clackamas for "the suburbs."

The Sellwood Bridge is in Eugene?

When did move?

2011-10-17 06:07:04 PM
Also, Subby, Milwaukie Bay is *not* in Eugene. It's in Portland. Specifically, the Sellwood neighborhood.

2011-10-17 06:07:30 PM
That's not ironic, Subby, that's just what happened.

My hometown. Was not expecting to ever see it on the main page.

And subby, Southeast Portland is nowhere NEAR Eugene.

You mean it's not pronounced Will - Ahhh- Met-e? Having lived half my life in the PNW, you can tell who isn't from there by how towns (and most rivers) are pronounced. Total wharrgarbles....

I still want to know who came up with the term "Walkie-talkie"? I thought it was a military invention.

WTF - my first 5 minutes in Eugene, and someone tried to sell me a sack of weed. It's the anarchist and tree-sitters capital of the US. You sure you're not thinking of Springfield?

"The body of Eugene Ford Jr. was found Sunday morning floating in the Willamette River one mile south of the Sellwood Bridge, near 11312 S.W. Riverwood Rd., in Southeast Portland."

Probably wrong because I just moved here but the S.W. streets are in the southwest part of town. S.E. streets in southeast and so on.

He was found in the river, so S.E. and S.W. get a little murky there.
That being said, Milwaukee, Milwaukie, no matter how you spell it,
it's still just another name for shiate Hole. And that goes double for Eugene

As a Milwaukee kid who went to school in Eugene and now lives about ten miles from Milwaukie I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Nope, there's been a bit of a shift on the city council and the county commission as well. Right now there is a county redistricting plan that would cut up the more liberal parts of Eugene and add in more conservative rural parts to dilute the impact of liberal voters on the county commission.

There are also a lot of conservatives that didn't bother voting in Eugene that were empowered to go and vote by the Tea Party movement. Add in more than a few liberals that didn't bother voting because DeFazio is always going to win so there were no down ticket votes and you get a conservative on an otherwise liberal city council.
