Seems only dumb people are annoyed by someone simply conversing on a cellphone.

Probably has to do with thinking that they are being talked about.

Idiots I say.

And have you ever noticed that the people that say that overhearing someone talking on a cellphone is invading their personal space and complain about it have no problem with it when they are on their cellphone talking in public. The people that complain about trivial shiat like that the most are usually the biggest and loudest offenders of it.

I like to go around with a Bluetooth headset and yell out things like "screw you!" or "you are one ugly mother" while looking at people, then when they give me funny looks or otherwise respond, I give them a disapproving look and point at my headset.

...of course, I don't have a phone on me, but they don't appear to realize that.

actually people on phones are approximately 46% louder than if they were holding a conversation directly beside the other person, so IMHO it has less to do with paranoia, than genuine irritation over noise pollution.

It's the same effect that alcohol has on frat boys drinking at the same table in a bar. It'slike the 2 beers and 2 shots they just had made them all lose 50% of their hearing.

A headline mentioning reddit? We're through the looking glass here.

Since it's out there now, we might as well have an honest discussion about it. I get it that some articles are going to be posted on multiple sites and that sometimes a certain site will have it posted a day or two ahead of others. That said, about 90% of the greenlit threads I see on Fark were on reddit a day or two prior. People need to stop trolling their site for stories and come up with something we haven't already seen.

It's kind of like when people post in the wrong thread.

IMO the worst cell phone offenders are the people having some sort of feud over the phone.

"I'm not going to talk about this right now. No, it's settled. I'm not going to listen to your excuses. I don't care. I'm hanging up now. I'm hanging up now. See you when I get home. I'm hanging up now. Goodbye."

I read about this a while ago...somewhere (maybe cracked??). It's not about the cellphone. It's about only being able to hear 1/2 of a conversation. Our brains like symmetry, patterns, predictability. You don't get that with phones.

When you hear both sides of a conversation, its easier to ignore becuase you have all the facts; your brain has it's symmetry. There is no puzzle, no mystery. You can hear two people talking aobut jersey shore...so you tune it out.

When you only hear half of a conversation, your brain instinctively wants to know WTF is going on so it becomes difficult to ignore/tune out. Why is he laughing, why did he just say chicken pot pie? I heard the word fired...are they talking about pottery of jobs?

So...if I understand your complaint correctly, it's that one aggregator website publishes a link to non-original content after another aggregator website has already posted same content (that they didn't create either?)

Seriously? That's your gripe?

The problem with reddit, is that there are rarely articles or links on the front page that have the content that fark does. Most of the links are just links to imgur pictures or an ama/askreddit where there are 7,000 posts. Yes there is interesting content, but it doesn't have the substance that fark does. And this is coming from someone who uses both quite regularly.

See, I came to Fark completely by accident and ended up staying, and I had no idea wtf Reddit was until I saw a post somewhere on Fark about it. So I decide to check out the site and see if it was worth bookmarking. I honestly cannot stand the main page layout, or even worse, the comments section layout. This isn't the 90's anymore, you'd think they'd update that garbage.

2011-10-17 03:35:39 PM
In the late 90s, I was sitting in the cafe of a bookstore talking with my mom via cell phone. There was a couple seated near me engaged in an obviously enthralling conversation. I could hear every single word - and I am hard of hearing.

I laughed at something my mom said, and one of the guys got up, took the five steps to get to me and RAILED on me. He ripped my phone from my hand, hung up on my mom and slammed the phone down on my table while screaming at me about how rude I was being for talking on the phone in public.

Some dude seated near me got up, put himself between me and the guy and went off on the guy about my conversation not walking over, choking his partner, shoving his face on the table and standing over him yelling and trying to intimidate him. Dude went the hell off on him. It was awesome.

CSB.

yup... this!

But I find that people do that not only on cell, but on land lines too.

I tend to tell such people to simply hang up and go to a window, the other party will hear them just as well.

And I find that there's nothing more stupid looking that someone scrambling with their phone, walking around holding it up like they're busy saving the world or something.

I find that I have no problem when I see someone with an earpiece, they tend to talk at a normal level a lot more and not be as distracted, and I will admit that if I'm one of those when I'm out doing groceries and need to call in to see what's needed,

I will make sure that I actually talk softly so not to be overheard or bug others. I KNOW that I have a quality earpiece with a good microphone on my BluTooth.

The worse is when you hear someone in their car driving with their frigging phone to their ear, even though it's ILLEGAL to do it. And I do mean "hear" instead of "see", as that's how bad I've seen (or heard) some be.

It's amazing how much holding a device up to your head appears to lower the IQ of some... maybe there's something to the radiation thing.

Reddit is like having TotalFark; sure, you get to see EVERYTHING, but that usually means that you have to sift through EVERYTHING (self-indulgent crap included.)

Also, Reddit has a wee-bit of a fact-checking problem regarding user submissions.

Also also, the FARK headlines and threads are hilarious and/or engaging.

This is why I use my Bluetooth Stereo Headphones as a hands-free calling device: listen to music via music player on phone or take calls - and all without the "ear-roach".

2011-10-17 04:14:52 PM
My wife is a chronic cell phone loud talker. I don't know what makes her think no one can hear her but she wanders around the house from room to room speaking at a volume 3x the normal level. If I'm on the phone, I usually take the call in another room and close the door not to disturb anyone else.

I have a few of those (heck, wearing one now as a wireless headphone for music that I switch over for online discussion/video chats).

But for in the car and moving around, they aren't as handy as a small earpiece... I tend to try to get the smallest models I can find. I hate the "Borg" look that some people go for with a thing that's covering half their face.

You think that is most people's motive? Maybe like 12 years ago when cell phones were rarer, but who doesn't have a farking cell phone, how does that make you look important. They are probably not doing it for attention or malicious reasons, they are most likely oblivious that they are bothering anyone.

I'm sure that it has something to do with the person not knowing that their phone's default earpiece volume level is set to 'highest', and have no idea how to turn it down.

One reflects the perceived noise level in ones tone of voice, regardless of there being a telecommunications device involved in the process - If everyone at your table is drunk, loud and obnoxious (see fratboy analogy), then it stands to reason that you mirror that behaviour. If your phone earpiece is set to WHAAAARRRR, then your voice will automatically set to "GAAAARRRRBLE", even if you are in a library.

dmars: they are most likely oblivious that they are bothering anyone.

There you go, shortened down to the essential.

You might have limited knowledgeable about psychology of human behavior otherwise you'd be aware that the loudest people, on the phone or otherwise is due to their overwhelming desire to be noticed, otherwise, they'd have both manners and the ability to be discrete.

I'd dare you to do something to let one of these people be aware that they have your attention, and the odds are very high that they'd respond to it.

The question is, what are the odds that they will quiet down, and what are the odds that they'll go on a rant of something about "their right" and/or "minding your business", etc.

The funny part is that they'll actually enjoy the confrontation, it's part of the attention gathering. They'll consider themselves justified to react in any way they choose.

Most headsets are simple... tumble button, or the volume of the phone can also be adjusted.

If someone doesn't know how to adjust volume in either, they shouldn't have a phone in the first place... switch their phone with a banana, they probably won't notice.
