I think some people might have problems with the idea of BP receiving money for the oil spill instead of being forced to pay for it. Sure, Anadarko might have some culpability and in theory BP is just taking their money to add to their own money that they will later pay out to the victims. In practice it might very well end up with BP coming out ahead of the whole thing and actually profiting from their disaster. It wouldn't be the first time.

I've only half a mind on this, but it sounds like Andarko could have been hit for 25% of the total cost but by dropping the negligence claim, the $/barrell fine to all concerned parties is likely to be reduced.

In other words; Andarko STFU so everyone pays less and BP cut them a break on Andarko's 25% liability.
