It wasn't so much lying as it was just circumstances changing. His son Matt was looking like he would be pursuing a racing career and Mark wanted to spend his retirement supporting that. When Matt changed his mind and stopped racing Mark decided that driving a Hendrick car was loads better than sitting at home watching The Price is Right.
