Why the hell does the UFL not have it's season in the spring? I'm desperate for football then. Right now I'm busy in a schedule of NCAA and NFL ball. Come May I'm like a junkie with the twitches and I'd kill for a football like substance. If the UFL schedules its games in the fall, it deserves to die.

I think they were banking on the lockout going throughout the season

There's a serious problem. Other leagues tried the spring/summer thing and still didn't catch on. People are not OK with just any football. They want NFL and their favorite colleges.

When you get down to it they don't have the financial backing to hire the top talent away from the NFL and that is what it will take to overcome 100 years of tradition. The USFL thought they could get a few top players and that would be enough. It wasn't. Leagues have thought they could gamble on cities without an NFL team only to find that there was a reason those cities didn't have an NFL team.

The closest anyone has ever come was the AFL, and their merger with the NFL created a monster that will only die if it kills itself.

Makes me wonder why the Euro NFL never worked out. They held their games during the NFL offseason. Surprised the networks never jumped at the chance to broadcast them and fill that cultural gap.

I'd say there are some exceptions. Omaha seems to be doing well with their UFL team. If they found more cities like Omaha and Green Bay, the league might get somewhere.

Omaha did not do as well this season. I happened to drive by the stadium last night and they had a fairly good crowd without competing against the Huskers. The stadium was pretty empty for the first game, though.

Either way, this league is dead.

This season as a Rider fan makes me want to cut myself. Seriously it's been that bad.

How the hell do you not score a touchdown in 4 games? You would think it would happen a couple times by accident.

Sigh well I guess I can at least give the starting qb a bit of a break for playing most of that time with a broken foot.

True, but you can't really compare the CFL to leagues like the XFL, UFL, and USFL. It doesn't have to compete with the NFL.

RoosterCogburn: Makes me wonder why the Euro NFL never worked out. They held their games during the NFL offseason. Surprised the networks never jumped at the chance to broadcast them and fill that cultural gap.

It's unlikely that American audiences would have taken to it, at least in enough numbers to make it worth showing. But I doubt there was any sort of push to air them to begin with. Though even if it did become really popular over here it would have still failed. It just wasn't popular enough in Europe, and a league needs ticket sales to survive.

The USFL did that for a while and it worked. But they got off Dixon's plan and overexpanded, overcosted themselves and, worse, moved the schedule to fall to try and compete with the NFL, ensuring their demise.

Donald Trump screwed the USFL, completely and totally. There is a great documentary all about it that ESPN did quite a few years ago.

This was a league that was created, 90% on the idea that the NFL lockout was going to nuke regular season games and people would be begging for football.

The fact that, even before the lockout ended, they were unable to get their shiat together to start this season before September, means that such a business plan is not sufficient.

Now, the fact that a lot of people who crave football had never heard of this is not a direct cause of its failure, but a consequence of its direct cause. What channel is going to air a competing football league? CBS? Fox? NBC? ABC/ESPN? All of them have NFL contracts (which may very well at this point prohibit them from airing other professional football leagues). Versus aired the first two seasons, and then they were bought by NBC's parent company, and there goes Versus's desire to air the third season.

Cancelling NFLE was the dumbest thing the NFL has done in recent years. The league really needs a minor league system, and that was part of what the UFL tried to do over the last few years.

They have a minor league system - it's called college football. And they don't even have to pay for it.

SharkTrager: The closest anyone has ever come was the AFL, and their merger with the NFL created a monster that will only die if it kills itself.

The success of the AFL helps explain the failure of these other leagues. By 1960 there were a lot of major cities without a NFL team, NFL play had become -- what's the word? -- constipated, and a lot of NFL owners still weren't real keen on having players with darker skin than Y.A. Tittle. So the NFL left a big gaping hole in the market in terms of geography, style of play, and player quality. Despite those advantages the AFL still almost went belly up. There's just not the same sort of market opportunity today.
